Who’s this WE, Erin?

The vast majority of my friends celebrate solstice but, being respectful of other's religious beliefs, we also recognise Christmas and Hanukkah (all the more reason to celebrate). We are happy to share the season, why must Christians insist on monopolising it? By all means join the fun but please don’t piss in the eggnog.

Popeye, do you have a link please? I can’t find the article.

Z.

Piss in the eggnog....oh I wouldn't dare!

When I used the term "we" I simply meant it as in "we the people of today's world". "We"....in as "we" commonly know it today.....not as in "we against you or them".

While you and your friends recognize Christmas you're probably not celebrating it in the same sense as Christians, for if you do not believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ...then why on earth would you be celebrating his birth?  I know the Catholics started the whole take over the date thing (they've also started a bunch of other shit I don't necessarily agree with even though I was raised Catholic). But if they decided tomorrow that Christmas would now be held on the 4th of July instead.....people would still celebrate the 4th of July and those who believe in the teachings of Jesus Christ, aka Christian....would still celebrate the birth of Christ too. I'm not trying to take away your season.

My original point was that Jesus Christ is an integral part of Christmas.....whatever day it gets celebrated on.....otherwise they wouldn't have named it after him. Simple as that, I wasn't trying to knock anyone's beliefs or take joy out of anyone's season.

Misto, last year with all the controversy over "Happy Holidays" or "Merry Christmas" I made a big sign on a piece of 3 by 5 poster board and green and red magic markers and taped it to the back of my truck.
It read;
"MERRY CHRISTMAS!
And if the A.C.L.U. doesn't like that
they can KISS MY IRISH ARSE!"
People were crying laughing!
Even the cops who'd pull up behind me were laughing.
I have a pic of it somewhere here in my computer.

Going way out on a limb here.......

Isn't Jesus CHRIST the reason for CHRISTmas???

No actually.  It is an approximation.  The actually Christmas holiday has nothing to do with Christianity whatsoever.  It is a pagan tradition if I recall correctly.

dorsaisgirl1 -> RE: Toys for Tots refuses Talking Jesus Dolls. (11/15/2006 11:48:37 PM)

...how offensive it is to put someone as sage as Jesus in an action figure... it really is ridiculous.

Now this I wholeheartedly agree with.

No actually, Christmas has always been Christian. The date it is celebrated on was the date of a pagan holiday (actually several pagan holidays) and it was stolen in an attempt to squash those celebrations. Many of the traditions associated with Christmas have come from those pagan roots as pagans carried them over as they converted to Christianity.. But the word Christmas and the reasons for it came with the Christians.

I think we need to decide what Christmas is before deciding what it's about.

If, to you, Christmas involves mass, a family dinner, a few gifts, and bed, it's Christian.

If it involves a tree put up 6 months in advance, 300 gifts that are so useless, but another gift to open, the purchasing of "Bing Crosby sings the Christmas Hits vol. 89," and a cheesy Santa costume, you're a dirty fucking Pagan.

Yours,

benji

Christmas is stocking up with whiskey, Cuban cigars and good books, smashing the TV to bits, putting on some soothing music and locking the world out until all the ersatz merrymaking and pseudo religious shit is over for another year.

Fuck the Christmas Nazis  wir haben Weisen, Sie sich amüsieren zu lassen.

Thing is, of course, there are those on this board for whom it probably isn't a proper celebration unless someone actually does.

I know this was not directed at Me, but I will respond anyway[8D] The Celebration of Christmas is a Christian holiday. Chaunakah, or the Festival of Lights is a Jewish holiday, Kwaanza is an  Black American cultural holiday with African overtones. Christians are not Monopolozing Christmas, we are simply celebrating the birth of Christ on the day we, as Christians have set aside to do so. If you wish to celebrate solstice, by all means do so, but do not expect Christians to stop celebrating Christmas.
Perhaps you might like the all purpose winter religious and cultural festival that the cell phone companies were (jokingly) promoting, in which case you would be wished a happy chrismachaunakwaanzakah.

                                      I wish you well,

I still can't imagine a kid wanting one, but at least if they make sure it's a kid who Believes in Jesus, it will only be a lame toy, not an offensive one.:)
