Status: offline 		That's interesting.  Is there a big Orthodox population in Spain?  I had assumed they were all Roman Catholic.

I am well aware of that, as that was my mother's tradition in Spain. :)  Except they were so poor, their gifts were hand made little trinkets.  It's not really about the gift, anyway, it's about giving.

I would say that some people hold Christ in high esteem and are simply offended to see such an entity demeaned to such a cheapened level.  One could say the same for a Ghandi action figure, or a Dali Lama figure, or a Buddha, etc.  Personally I can't stand the cheapening and commercialization we practice in this generation, with little to no respect or regard for those others hold sacred.


I just view it differently. It is a rather sweet Jesus doll.......the commercial aspect is another matter really.

People buy crucifixes, with a Christ figure attached to it, nailed and depicted in agony.......they don't appear to be *offensive*. They buy pictures, posters, videos, books and bibles........someone, somewhere is making a profit from it. I simply don't see why a dolly is offensive. It's not making fun of Christ. People might hold certain things sacred but I think they might need to be a little more robust if they are so easily offended. Next it'll be a cartoon strip.......ahem.

It means they can't fucking endorse any religion! What it means is the Marines an armed service should not be involved with Toys for Totes. It means the Marines shouldn't be able to accept or turn down toys. It means men and woman who happen to be Marines can volunteer but the Marines should have nothing to do with it.

Popeye, I suspect you will be getting coal this year. Whatever happened to the Christian values of love and accepting, the spirit of giving all that you have? Or does that only apply when you can hand out tokens of your own faith? Christianity never tells us to offend others, Christ taught us to accept others and love them. If you are going to be backward and selfish in your thinking do it privately lest other people start thinking all Christians are like you. Rotten scrooges who think only good little Christian children get presents.

I know of no big Orthodox population in Spain and yes, they are mainly Catholic (being in Seville during Holy Week is really something to see). 

January 6th marks the Epiphany.  The 12 days of Christmas, after all, is December 25 to January 6th.  January 6th was when the three wise men arrived with their gifts, hence the exchange of gifts on that day.  In Spain, they call it El Dia de los Reyes (The Day of the Kings).

Edited to add: Of course, none of this changes my opinion that a charity sponsored by the U.S. government, or the Marines, or whatever, should not exclude non-Christians in its mission statement.  Frankly, I can't think of a less Christian attitude.

When people refer to Latin America they tend to think of Central & South America, and not Spain (Spain is not in the Americas, after all).  However, many in Mexico and Chile practice a gift exchange on Jan 6, also.

I can understand this.  This is why I pondered the question of whether Toys for Tots is really "government sponsored" if all its funding comes from private donations.  Also, I don't think they are excluding giving gifts to non-Christians.  They are giving gifts to everyone, in the spirit of Christian giving....hence Christmas.

Side Note:  When I wish someone a Merry Christmas, whether they celebrate Christmas or not, it is because it is a holiday that I celebrate, and so I share that part of myself with those I care about.  I have had Jewish friends send me happy Hanukkah wishes, and I felt quite happy they wished to include me in their celebration.  I would feel that way about anyone wishing to share their religion with me.  I'm just happy to be thought of!
