Here's an interesting question that came up the other day in conversation.  How does a D/s couple sneak "obey" into wedding vows without raising any serious eyebrows among the vanilla people in the audience?

I've been to plenty of weddings in the past few years in which the word "obey" was still a part of the vows.

It is?  Wow, I've been to maybe 15 in the last 5 years or so and none of them had it if using traditional vows.  I thought it went out a long time ago.

Would it raise eyebrows........seriously?

The word *obey* is part of the vows of a Christian wedding but can be *opted out* of..........I very much doubt that people attending a wedding really would care that much.

If it WAS mentioned, it's easy enough to just say that that version was preferred.

I just added it in which caused a double take on the lady performing the ceremony and gave Himself and I a chuckle. When the rehearsal takes place, the couple can simply request that the proviso be added. No big deal, there are lots of traditionalists who embrace the concept and there are a lot of people who don't realize it's actually no longer standard to have it in there.

Depends on the crowd, but from what I've noticed, it's not at all uncommon.

After all it's your wedding- if you can't take a stand in your own vows to eachother, where can you take a stand?

You do not need to 'sneak' the word into vows. Wedding vows can contain almost any variation of words that the couple wishes.

As for how others would view hearing it. Who cares what they think?

The vows were supposed to be love, honor and obey when I got married.  I insisted that we reword them, becasue I refused to vow to obey my husband.
Honestly, with the number of weddings performed where people write their own vows nowadays, I really doubt anyone would find anything said to be all that strange.

oh oh - i think love, honor, obey and accept beatings might raise a few eyebrows. Or how about love, honor and beg - or maybe love, honor, obey and worship. Now we're talking eyebrow raisers. lol

Thanks for the comments everyone.  As I said, I just assumed that it had been completely removed from all services since I've never seen it used.

I was living in sc, so it was the standard, but we made sure it was in our vows. As for the vanillas they mostly don't pay attention to the priest, they just see the bride and groom. In todays vows you can select what works for you.

Ii know 25 years ago when I did the last wedding we wrote our own vows and took "obey" out.  But maybe if I did it this time, perhaps I'd put "obey" in, for the sub male to say to me that is!

In my wedding we said love honor and cherish because we both knew i would not obey LOL.  Now in my new life i would use those words since i will not date vanilla again  course don't expect to marry again either.  But if it should happen obey will be invited.

When my late Master and I married; our vows contained the four words obey, honor, protect and serve. ( the ones that I spoke )
His contained honor, and protect.

Did not raise any eyebrows from anyone who attended.

Edited because I can not spell tonight.

We got married in June, you merely tell them that is the ceremony you want.
We had about 15 to choose from....I'm sure all ministers offer the same.

Well, you can right your own vows. Some religions still use it. Its your wedding , write what you want.

They just say something like "W/we like the sound of it-it's romantic", or they could say "W/we are traditional at heart". M/most don't care, when When I was at a wedding last "obey" was in there, doesn't mean she does though lol, and no one cares anyway.
