I get my frustrations out best in writing. So I apologize in advance if I offend anyone. I am an overachiever, type A, perfectionist all in one. I have worked my butt off in every endeavor and excelled at everything I have done especially my jobs. If I fail in anyway or falter I beat myself up. I am in a new job now where the pressure is on... the competition is high. I have some people I work with that are either intimidated by me or want to make me trip up in some way to make them look good. So I have to step up the game. It just pisses me off that I have this desire to always be the best is it even worth it to let people piss me off and fuel my desire to kick their royal asses? I want to succeed in this job I want to eventually move up to own my own business or be in a management position work up in the corporate world. I want to do something with my life. So there is much pressure on my plate. I feel like I'm losing my game. Anyways this is totally random. Is anyone else like this or am I just a rare breed. How do I regain my cool and reach to the top without beating myself up?

Someone is gonna knock you down a peg or two some day - and you know what it will do you the world of good

I certainly didnt mean that in a bitchy way - apologies if it came across like that. Suceeding is great but not at the expense of everything else or others.

I agree. I'm too nice at times. It's hard being a woman of power in the workplace and not come across as a bitch but not come across as pushover either. So I'm looking for the happy medium. I didn't take it as bitchy. I appreciate the advice. Thanks!

My (female) boss has a bumper sticker posted over her desk which says "You call me a bitch like its a bad thing."

The ironic aspect of this is that as a mock assailant, my job is to call her a bitch (and worse) all the time.

Not sure how I am wrong, but I am sure I am.

The word can mean several things to different people. Some think the word Bitch is an accomplishment. Some think its degrading. Depends on the person I guess.

When you die you will be put in a box the same as everyone else and no what will give a fuck if you achieved or not. Life is a sensual experience and not a competition. I sit on my balcony having coffee every morning watching the rat race go by and everyone appears to be missing one half of their little world. If you are not experiencing the quality of life you are just a carcass.

What it means to her is that I am mock assaulting her and trying to prise my way into her emotional state by pissing her off.

Her response generally is to elbow me in the face, knee me in the groin so hard I get lifted off the ground, I then drop to my knees, at which point she gives me a full power knee kick to the center of my head.

A whistle blows.

She brings out a student for me to call names.

And so on.  And so forth.

everyone wants to be the best at something...your thing is being the best at your job.  and there's nothing wrong with that if you love the work you do.  everyone has their own measuring stick for success.

I've acheived success in the corporate world, and can tell you, it's a soul devouring place.  It was for me anyway, you might love that kind of thing.

Whenever I feel that my focus and expectations may be unreasonably strong and high in one area of my life and I feel frustrated, like I'm spinning my wheels...which it seems you're feeling a bit of....I take a break.  I focus on something else...sometimes that frustration is just another part of your life that needs attention....sometimes a break from concentrating on one thing lets you come back revitalized and refreshed and lets you see things from an entirely different perspective.

If you plan on owning your own business someday, I wouldn't stop what you're doing at work, learn everything you can, and importantly, learn to recognize your limitations.  Just don't forget there are other measures of success besides what you put 40 hours of your time into every week.  You may be financially fit and satisfied on the employment level, but are you physically, mentally and spiritually fit as well?  In business you're always taking aim and firing at the success target...and don't you want to have as many bullets, things going for you, as you can so you have the most opputurnities to hit that bulleye that you can possibly have?

Mock (armored) assailant for full-contact women's self defense.

Im the padded armor guy who is mean to people and then gets kicked in the head.

I agree about stopping and smelling the coffee and enjoying life and not getting caught in the ratrace...point taken. I am by nature competitive... it drives me in life. It is who I am. It is a requirement in my job. Is it wrong if I want to leave a legacy on this earth. Some people want to be forgotten. I want to leave something that will live on in this world... a legacy of something positive. I think life isn't just here for us to be living but to make something good out of it. Thats just my scoop on it.

Wow. This hit the nail on the head. This is exactly the advice I needed. Thank you! What kind of work were you in if I may ask?

Spitfire, if you're working for a privately owned company or a publically owned company the only thing you're going to be doing is to make more money for the owner or stockholders.
Are you in a paper-shuffling job?

I was in sales for a while too when I got out of the military.
I sold Insurance, life, health, long-term care etc.
It took a while to get lisensed and there is a lot to learn in that business! Not at all easy like real estate or selling cars.
Try selling someone something they can't see!
One thing is to know your product! And I mean inside and out!
When I go to a car dealer and a salesman comes up to me I always ask; "How many cubic inches is 5.4 Litres?" (it comes out to 330 cu. inches.)
Ninety five % of the time they can't answer so they just say "I don't know." I say "next!" That person is just an "order taker" not a Salesperson who knows his or her product.
Also dress the part. You don't need to be dressed in $1,000 cashmere coats but be dressed tastefully.

Artist. Sculptor/fine art printmaker/ designer. Self employed/freelance.

I've done my share of other work. I started out as a coal mine mechanic, then steel worker and docker.

Spitfire...i was in an offshoot of real estate...storage...great industry, great product...build it, pay for it...collect $$ at prices /sqft that you wouldn't get on any residencial or commercial space in north america besides maybe manhatten and a few others.  it's a new enough industry that companies are still small enough that if you're really good at what you do, you can get up there pretty quickly.

the reason that you're so aggressive in your job if you're going door to door, is because you HAVE to be.  don't feel you need to take any flac for that.  but i don't know how long you'll be able to keep that up.  it's a high stress job with little pay back.  if you're good at selling people (i'm one of those too, i can sell ice to eskimos) then there are jobs that are less demanding, pay more, and might give you more job satisfaction.  selling is good in that if you're passionate about the product and really believe in it and can sell reasonably, you'll probably get hired.

but if you like what you do, by all means...keep going.  just don't get suckered into one of those scams where you go door to door, then become a leader, and then a manager, gradually doing less selling, and more hiring of sellers and then if you're REALLY good you'll open your own office and business!  wow...look at that guy, he did it and he's 24!  owns this car and goes here and here.....no matter how great it sounds, it's a scam.  i suppose there is money to be made, but you have to be pretty ruthless to do it.
