Growing up near Hollywood, I've had the opportunity to meet many and see more, but two particular ones that I was able to meet come to mind.

I have family in Arkansas and we were there during the filming of Gator with Burt Reynolds.  Since my aunts cab company was being used as background, we were introduced to him.  I met him again during another film being done at Universal Studios.

Eddie Mekka (Carmine from Laverne and Shirley) - I met him on the soundstage when I was a child and can only remember what an ass he was.

I've also spent the last 3 years in theatre and have had the opportunity to meet many Broadway stars both on tour and in NYC.

During the last Family Values Tour in our area with Korn, Deftones, Flyleaf, Deadsy...  I met and got pics with the entire band of Flyleaf.

The next month or so, I went to the Nickelback "All The Right Reasons" concert; met, got an autograph, pictured and touched (which had me freaking out like an idiot afterwards--i.e. me gasping "Oh my god, oh my god, oh my god" as I walked away) Chad Kroeger.  I printed out the picture and framed it.  It's also a profile pic on a website.

I hope to someday meet Angelina Jolie.  Once that happens, I may die happy.

Hmm... I think I've mainly met/seen famous people from conventions.  I've met most of the Mythbusters build team, seen a lot of sci-fi stars from shows like Star Trek, Stargate, Firefly, Andromeda...  Cliff Simon was very cool and just as hot in real life.  My favorite person would have to be Neil Gaiman.  He's quite possibly my favorite author.  I (am such a geek) was dressed up as his version of Death at the time, and he gave me a big hug to go with the autographs and pictures.  Oh, btw...  the Dalai Lama spoke at one of my brother's graduations, and I know who Chris Claremont is.

Matt from Muse (arsehole), drummer fellow from Muse (lovely), Kay from Kay (we watched idlewild with her at Glastoonbury one year), Roni Size (my mate used to breakdance with his son), one or two Guardian people, Som from My Vitriol (sweet, very shy), all the wankers from no-hit hype-wonders Halo, and for whatever reason, Steve Austin, who I'm told is a wrestler or gladiator or something, and Maxi from King Adora (lots of times, also a wanker, was shagging an ex of mine), Midge Ure (miserable git), Terry Pratchett (charming, incredibly disappointing voice).

Loads of people, most of whom are famous in very specialised ways (and were wankers) :)

They were very salty.

Oh! I remembered another!

Matt Lucas (the short, bald one from Little Britain) - although for the purposes of possible legal action in the circumstances, I will say it looked very much like him!

It was in a pub in the gay quarter of Birmingham (UK). I went to the bar, turned around and there, hidden in an alcove was (a guy who looked very much like) Matt Lucas; dressed head to toe as a woman, and surrounded by three or four guys.

Does Jesus count, Because when I was in NY, this guy or being said he had returned from the heavens, that he was the son of God and that his name was Jesus.  If so, I guess I trump everyone.

Seriousley, I've met a few celebs,  run into some at airports, broken bread with one or two, worked on a gig here and there, blah, blah, blah.  However in my other world, my most acclaimed encounter is to come.  I've made mention before about an egagement.  In the coming year, Brad Pitt will be, consentually, tied to the foot of my bed on a nightly basis.  Don't even ask about you know who, we're poly, so alls good........Rosa.

I had the good fortune to visit the Lord of the Rings set and meet various cast members, including Elijah Wood, Viggo Mortensen, and (my favorite) Sir Ian McKellan. Also Peter Jackson.

This really is a great post.  It amuses me how different the "famous" people are that i've met compared to others.  I have met a few sports stars.  First was Eric Dickerson.  We were on the same flight from LA to Indianapolis when he was traded to the Colts.  More recently i've met Marvin Harrison and  Peyton Manning, both of whom are incredibly cool, modest people.  I've met a couple famous politicians, although none that i'd care to admit to!  A few decades back i met the members of the band Iron Butterfly (showing my age!!!).  And i also talked at length with Douglas Adams (sadly, now deceased), who wrote the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy" science fiction trilogy that was turned into a major movie last year; the trilogy consists, rather oddly, of five books.  He was a touch odd, as one might expect of a person who writes a five volume trilogy, but i was also impressed with his intelligence and peculiar sense of humor.

I've also met a few TV and movie actors/actresses in restaurants and airports (waaaaay too much time in airports over the years), but my most memorable encounters with "famous" people are quite different.  Once i met Andy Grove, one of the cofounders of the Intel Corp; i've had online chats with Steve Wozniak, cofounder of Apple Computers; and i've met several Nobel Laureates, including John Bardeen, whose work allows us all to be here on the net (he was coinventor of the transistor, for which he won the Nobel Prize in Physics; and then some years later he led a team that finally explained the remarkable phenomenon called superconductivity, which just might revolutionize the way electrical energy is delivered from the powerstations to the people and companies who use it, for which he won a second Nobel prize, making him the only person in the world to ever win two Nobel prizes in the same field), a couple fellows famous for their work in nuclear physics, and finally and most significantly, a very warm, kind gentleman named Eugene Wigner, who was the best friend of a guy named Albert Einstein.  I also met another famous physicist named Archibald Wheeler, who was also a colleague of Einstein; Wheeler coined a term that is now part of our vocabulary: 'black hole.'  Wheeler should have been a Nobel Prize winner, based on his many, many contributions, but he was rewarded in many other ways for his contributions to science.

And lastly, i know someone who is not truly famous in his own right, but he made a contribution to the world at large that is familiar to very many people.  he was a classmate from college, a companion in the drama club, and a very close friend; and he gave the world that very annoying logo (and its derivatives) that proclaims on the front of millions and millions of personal computers around the world: "Intel Inside."

Ian McKellen is freakin' amazing - I saw him a wee bit ago appearing in the Cut on stage. I'm also told he propositioned a friend of mine in a men's room.

I'd've said yes. Helluva thing to tell the grand kids! "Many years ago, granddad met Gandalf.."
