I'm considering becoming a Youth Director and help Troubled/Depressed Teens who may be having a hard time with life, school, and making friends. School shootings and suicides are getting way out of hand. Where's the reality we had as teens that things will turn out okay? I attended my 10yr HS reunion last week and found myself in room of strangers who where all polite, civil, and human. If you can just let the bad things pass, you'll come accross good fortune.

F/F, I can picture you doing that. the burn out rate is fast in that field. I worked in group homes for about 5 years- it was very rewarding.

I think that we don't find our calling.. it finds us. Each one of us is exactly where we need to be at this point of our lives. Learning the lessons we came here for. "Imagine the universe beautiful and just and perfect. Then be sure of one thing: the IS has imagined it quite a bit better than you have".

Well, since the federal govt. has chosen to not enforce our immigration laws I was wondering if there is a way to compel them to not enforce the laws on bank robbery with the same zeal. I would absolutely LOVE to be a Bank Robber! Either armed robbery or white collar, makes no difference to me!

I suspect it makes minimal difference to one's life, but I'd be let down if the whole shebang was preplanned. (Besides, for my money the universe is that much more amazing and remarkable for not being predetermined, as are we.) Nobody has to have a calling, or some great purpose to their life. It doesn't make you less of a person to never wake up one day and realise you have always been destined to feed the poor/fix boilers/wank in shop windows/whatever.

Right on, ScienceBoy. I believe things just happen, and that's fine with me. Never felt a "calling" per se but I always wanted to be an archaeologist when I grew up. I later bought into the notion that such things were for other, somehow special people...not folks like me. A very amazing friend helped me overcome that lack of vision and I ended up going back to school, studying anthropology and actually starting my career (I always call it my "so called career") in archaeology. That was 22 years ago. It's not really a great calling...kind of a nonessential, "science as entertainment" kinda thing, but it pays the bills. As for a "calling"? The closest I can come to that is when I think of the truly important fact of my life: I provide a safe, secure, love-filled home for my two cats, Otis and Daisy. Bob

When you get tired of hitting your head against the brick wall and simply accept that it's a brick wall and walk around behind it to see why it is there..THEN you will find your answers. This is not something you can see right now. Whatever is going on in your life.. it's there because you NEED it to be there. Some people need comfort..some need drama. The only CHOICE you have is how you react to them.

Its plain we each have more than one calling. That should be heartening to those who read here. I dont feel there is something I "should" be doing, as in gee, I guess Im not. Truthfully, I was 35 when I understood my callings. It does take some time to move through life, in order to then look back and see what you have done. Pretty much looking at where you've been gives insight into who you really are. Also for me, once very few years I might like to go read up on who I am astrologically. That usually helps to understand myself or reinforce my belief that Im on the right path. The hardest part is that there is no one who can tell you on your inner most spiritual level, that you doing things "right", or that yes you have chosen wisely, or you are following the path that you are born to find. So I guess that we should really just keep moving forward with the best outlook and treat the world with respect. Theres somethihng uplifting about being able to look yourself in the eye, and know that you have done the least mount of harm possible in this world. And whos to say that THAT alone is not a righteous calling.

I went back to school to become an anthropologist when I was 30, I have my BA and want to work on my PhD, it is my calling and I do not feel quite right about anything in my life unless I am actively pursuing it. Follow your vocations, life is too short.

.....'calling' is a somewhat problematic word, it has a few religious overtones that don't sit well with me....but 'vocation' seems a much more sensible word. i think we all have the potential for at least one vocation...finding out exactly what it is seems the tricky bit.

i went to a catholic high school... my buddy and i had a great time- using our" lession" in with the new and out with the old. so new clothes new stereo...new stuff...lol

I was born to be a writer. I was trained to be a writer. I was a professional writer. But I learned that "professional writer" is another term for "masochist", which I am not. I have a degree in journalism and in English which qualifies me to write ... or ... to sell real estate. I like to eat and have a place to live ... so you guess which one I do. I still write, but I write for myself, for my own enjoyment, and at times (when asked nicely) I write for money. I do not chase this evil muse any more - it must come to me. However, in real estate, marriage, motherhood, etc etc (ad infinitum) there is one aspect of my personality that is missing, something else I was born to be. I was born to be a sub - it is who I long to be but not often who I get to be. When I am allowed that luxury, I get it wrong and I step all over it and make a big mess ... but it is still what I was born to be and it is something for which I will always strive.

I should have been a writer, a journalist or a lawyer. Something with words anyway - and maybe all three of those. But as I think happens with most people, life got in the way, and before I knew it I had to work a job I didnt like to pay a mortgage and feed the kids. Still, I've managed to do almost everything in life I wanted to, and dabbled a lot in all the things I would have done professionally, alongside a job - which at nearly 39 (1st December, hint, hint), is something of a problem; what am I aiming for now!? E

I pretty much think my calling in life is to make the most of it. Its been a pretty good philosophy to live by and had me experience all kindsa wonderful things. If I can get to being old and grey with a light heart remaining and a little sparkle left in my eyes, I think I will have done a pretty good job at life. As far as jobs and stuff, I've never had any real ambition. As far as what other people have told me I should do? "Write.........." maybe one day lol

The Times (London) did a series of interviews with some of the most successful people in the country across a range of professions from physics through the arts to engineering etc, the majority said they were not ambitious, just passionate about their interest and lived for it. Goals and succeeding are a distraction. I get up every morning an indulge in my passion. I really don't care if anyone else appreciates what I do or not as long as I earn enough money to live, beyond that, who cares? No one else will care if I have goals and succeed or not. Why ruin my experience of the world by fretting over an arbitary goal that has no meaning beyond my own imagination.?
