Funny, I was about to start a thread similar. Was thinking of calling it 'English lesson'. The TWO of them are going TO take THEIR bikes down THERE TO THEIR favorite spot because THEY'RE TOO tired TO walk. It will AFFECT them in a positive way and the EFFECT lasts a while. Get it ? You might have to read it 459,120 times or perhaps once will do. Really, I have read so much excellent correspondence on this forum and it is clear that people here do possess a mind and actually use it. I can see past errors and make my judgments more baed on content rather than spelling, but there is another issue. When you make certain mistakes a good portion of people read something into it, and that something is that they respect your intelligence a notch or two less. We all certainly agree that reading is fundamental. Who wouldn't ? But if reading is fundamental then what is one to read ? I therefore submit that writing is even more fundamental. I do mention it once in a while, but in no way is it my job to critique everyone's spelling. I do however see language as a tool, used for communication. When you use a tool properly, whether it is a hammer or an oscilloscope, you get the best results by using it correctly. When you use language correctly, the reader seems to flow through it. When the reader has to do mental gymnastics to correct errors on the fly I think it generally detracts from the writer's point. And in a case where the writer is presenting ideas in a contrived order for effect, errors pretty much blow that out the window. There is significant contingent of readers that will make an unsound judgement based on the writer's spelling ability. Even though I avoid jumping to conclusions, certain things are apparent to the highly literate. First of all if one refers to 'license' as plural, it indicates that they learned language phonetically. In and of itself it is not a bad thing. I like to try and use language properly, but I do screw up sometimes so don't go picking through my posts and finding things. I'll nip that in the bud right now by admitting that I am not perfect. So there. :-) T
