siamsa,

Good luck. Born in Trenton, schooled in South Orange, lived in NYC and NJ until moving to LA in 2002, with a five year sabitical to St. Louis. There are good things and bad things about every area. Regarding trasportation, you have many options to commute to the City, but it is a crowded trip. Living in the City is great, but not without considerable assets. There is no "low rent" district in Manhattan. Howver when making the decision remember to add back the transportation costs. A car in a liability in Manhattan and you don't need it. When I left it was costing as much to garage my car as I once paid for a nice apartment.

However look at the opportunities. This was in my NY paper today concerning classes at Columbia. Maybe you can do some graduate studies there.

quote:

WILD SEX 101

S&M clubs, nude parites, porn, X-rated romps rule at Columbia.

Others volunteer for the bullwhip at Conversio Virium, the university-sanctioned S&M club that means "exchange of power" in Latin. It calls itself a "discussion group" that provides "education and peer support" and promotes "safe, sane and consensual play." But the club doesn't just talk. Late on the night of Nov. 13, a Daily News reporter sat in room 303 of Hamilton Hall, a venerable classroom building where Columbia students have studied Poe, Plato and Plutarch for nearly 100 years. As a female student volunteer stood facing the blackboard, and two dozen Columbians watched, a lecturer who identified himself only as Dov flogged her repeatedly with leather whips, rubber hoses - and a cat-o'-nine-tails. "I'm Dov, and these are my toys," he said, and for the next 14 minutes he demonstrated lashing techniques. The activity was consensual, but the squeals of delight mingled with the occasional yelps of pain. Source: http://www.nydailynews.com/front/story/474805p-399293c.html

Unfortunately Long Island isn't going to be an option for you. Suffolk & Nassau Counties have high tax rates as well as high home prices. My niece paid over $250,000 for her house about 5 years ago & the prices have only increased since then. I live out in Suffolk County & worked in NYC about 3 years it took me 1 1/2 hours to commute each way on the train (LIRR) which started out costing $200 & increased to $250 per month plus about 20 minutes on the subway which was another $75 to $80. All in all a rough commute plus I live with family so my rent is fairly reasonable. There are places in upstate NY and PA which may be more reasonable. Just be prepared in the NY metro area distance from a place is usually given by time rather than actual miles. I live about 30 miles from my job but it takes me at least 45 minutes during rush hour (6am) to get there. On a weekend or late at night the actual time might only be 20 to 30 minutes. You either get used to it or leave. If he's working in the theater he needs to take into consideration the hours he's working plus also parking fees in NYC. Trains to my town stop running at reasonable hours about 8:30 pm and after that are sporatic. There are stations which are much more convenient but then the parking stinks, weekends are screwy too. It does take a lot of research but I would rent for a while rather than try to buy outright, that woukd give you some time to get the feel for the different areas. Good luck in whatever the outcome may be.
