Just guessing off top-o-my-head: Oscar winners for music?

fluffypet61 -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (1/27/2010 5:38:10 AM)

no

That first name was way too tempting for my copy of Google.  It just reached out from its cage, snatched it, swallowed it, and spit out "women directors/producers of silent films."

Women pioneers in American avant-garde filmmaking

Women pioneers in developing film-making equipment.  For example: Guy-Blaché first used a sound boom - a mike on a fishing rod.

Master Tim is correct.  Early female film makers.

New Quartet:

Kennedy
Word
Troop
Fitzgerald

LanceHughes -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (1/27/2010 5:10:39 PM)

(John) F. Kennedy
(The) "F" word
(The) F Troop
F. (Scott) Fitzgerald

That's all I got. Hope it's right.  I've had a quartet burning a hole in my pocket for a couple of days now.

Fine Finish.

Forge Forth.

KEWL!

Leather
Cotton
Wood
Paper

There's really supposed to be 5 on the list, but in keeping with the theme of quartets, I've removed the 4th one and then scrambled them.  Hehehehe, evil, evil grin.

Actually, there are 24 on the list:

:::sniff:::  /drys eyes/ I had hoped for at least one wrong guess.  Take 'er away, Captain.

I was looking for the answer of four of the first five.

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (1/27/2010 10:07:22 PM)

New Quartet:

Aaron Copland
D. W. Griffith
Walt Whitman
Robert E. Sherwood

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (1/28/2010 7:54:01 PM)

If you need a hint--something Lance said in his last post gave me the idea for the quartet.

fluffypet61 -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (1/28/2010 9:25:53 PM)

Well, Walt Whitman wrote O Captain, My Captain, so i thought maybe they all wrote music, films, or plays with "Captain" in them.  But i can't find any.

So back to the research.

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (1/28/2010 9:41:15 PM)

You are very close.

We are indeed talking about a poem, a play, a film, and music. And the "Captain" is what you're looking for.

fluffypet61 -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (1/28/2010 10:16:19 PM)

Oh, of course - O Captain! My Captain! was about Abraham Lincoln!

Aaron Copland - A Lioncoln Portrait for narrator and orchestra
D. W. Griffith - Abraham Lincoln a sound film
Walt Whitman - O Captain! My Captain! a poem
Robert E. Sherwood - Abe Lincoln in Illinois
a play

Musicmystery -> RE: What Do These Things Have In Common? (1/28/2010 10:22:53 PM)

Exactly. Well done.

Your turn, fluffy.
