Just the money like you pay for any other type of adult entertainment.  It's a fee.

it doesnt necessarily mean pay to play... some female dominants in particular prefer a tribute as a sign of sincerity from a submissive, since there are SO many that want the name, but not the game
i know i've been pretty annoyed lately with the submissive applicants that write to me, exchange a few heated emails, and run like the devil when they realise this isnt a cyber game to me. i've never required a tribute, but its sounding better and better!

Whenever I see the "because it's such a pain in the ass to have to weed through  the insincere ones.. so I ask for  money as proof of sincerity"  I think... people to that come to this activity had better have a very thick skin and the ability to read people well.  The one that is a "Pro" today could just as well have been an amateur yesterday that thought..hey, I think I'll charge.  I've seen many times a new person come and say "I don't know much about this but I want to be a pro.. where can I find a dungeon".

There is no process in which one "becomes a pro". No schools, no criteria, basically it's a crap shoot. It is determined by the individual domme alone.  If she thinks she's good enough and you  agree.. and pay- then she's a Pro.

If your parents had to tie a steak around your neck to get the family dog to play with you... then you are a good candidate as a customer.

sometimes true, but not always the case.

i have a good friend who is handsome, charming, and makes an insane amount of money.  he hires prostitutes on a semi-regular basis.  in his mode of thinking, he's not paying for sex.  he's paying her to go away when it's over.

i'm sure there are many submissive men who feel the same way, especially those seeking more "exotic" acts of submission.  who REALLY wants to "hang out" with the woman who just scatted on your head?

I think this thread has been hijacked a bit. The OP's question was what is a tribute. And everyone has kind of gone off talking about "why" instead of "what." I think the bigger question is what do dommes consider a tribute as being? Is it money, gifts, chocolate, flowers, diamonds, sex toys, etc, etc, etc..

As for the pro vs amatuer debate.. Keep in mind, that the great majority of people looking for a pro will not want a relationship. Most are probably in a relationship right now. I know a pro-domme who has told me well more than half of the subs that contact her are married. 30-40% are only looking for a one-night thing and arn't serious. And the other 10% are looking for a prostitute. So sorry to say you will still have to do a ton of weeding out. Maybe even more.
Professionals are also held to a higher standard. They are expected to be into many different things, be very open-minded, and are expected to be better than an amatuer and know what they are doing.

Most subs looking for a relationship will be more interested in an amatuer. People looking for a one-night or a short-term fling, will look for a pro to pay so that they get what they want.

Remember according to the dictionary, a "tribute" could be either a gift or a form of payment. It depends on the situation.

No, nothing like that. But if someone is paying you for something, they are going to expect the best, want the best, and assume you know what you are doing.

Too bad it's also not a "sub" thing too..lol (just kiding..er..i think)..lol.. if it's used as a "litmus test" for a show if intent and sincerity.

Well think of it this way....when you go to a bar or club and you walk up to someone, and you get met with their hand demanding "tribute" before they will give you the time of day. What would you do? I know what I'd do, I'd walk away.

I understand some people are tired of getting 200 e-mails a day. But guess what, that's your fault for making a profile on the internet. You just made yourself available to 6 billion people all over the world. What did you expect?

QuietDom,
How well put!  I would add that, though I have no experience with tributes personally, I would think that if they were used as you suggest, the item they choose could also be an interesting window into that submissive as well.  Did they choose flowers, a toy, or some other item.  Just a thought.

what does a tribute mean in profiles and messages?

It's when you tell them how wonderful, insightful, and meaningful they are, and give them money.

Not always. I know several non-pros who use a tribute request as a show of intent and sincerity. They've been jerked around by so many guys who just want to send email and get off on the responses that they ask for something small, and it's not always monetary. The ones who are in it for the free thrill almost never comply so it acts as a pretty effective litmus test to screen out the less than sincere.

Or, it screens out the "less than willing to pay"
