Greetings to All. i have seen Domme used as synonymous to Dominatrix, but i have also had people say Dominatrix is a term only for professional female dominants, and then again, i have seen people say 'professional Domme.'

So...is there really a difference between the terms? Or is it another of those pick-your-label things that everyone has a different opinion on, and there isn't nor was there ever a right answer?

I don't identify as either. If I have to use anything that makes gender reference I use dominant woman/female dominant. I don't even care for Mistress (this is why I spell it without the "i" or "e")

To answer the OP's question from my experience - generally Dominatrix is applied to pro-Dommes over here, but also used as a word that the public knows for news reports and media stories about any woman who is in a sexual relationship where she is dominant. The general public would not know the word Domme, and would assume it to be some French word that they had no business knowing in the first place.

There was a Lady in London a while back (Cynthia Payne - there was a movie made about her with Julie Walters, but I dont recall the name). She arranged parties in her house, and OK she had a couple of slaves hanging around to do the prep and clearing up etc. She was described as a Dominatrix in the papers rather than a Domme. Mind you, that was 20 years ago now and general public knowledge may have improved; I will however decline doing a survey to be sure of all this.

Dominatrix was actually the first word I heard that referred to the "lifestyle".

This one word set me on many, many, many more keyword searches through the local library. If it were not for hearing this word & in the manner it was said my path to finding out all that I know now would have been delayed all the more. For this I love the word but as you said, most often it refers to those who are in this as a profession & I am not pro.

But it seems more & more terms are all muddled up & share meanings.

To the OP, define it in a way that you are comfortable & use it whatever way you wish. Most people are just making this shit up as they go & you will find out all to well... it is difficult to get everyone standing in a room to agree to the meaning/definition of anything... even when the room your standing in only has 2 people in it.

To me, each title has a different...flavor. I've chosen the right flavor for me...as most others will!

However, I'll add some humor and define a new term: Hookinatrix - hooker with a whip. ;-)

I dislike both of the words. Domme is a made-up internet-ism and doesn't exist anywhere in the english language. Dominatrix is easy for the vanilla public to grasp, but oft refers to a woman of ill repute, or in the minds of some scene-folk, a pro dom (which I am not.)

I know what I am, as do those who are within my inner circle. If someone on the outside of that needs to find a label, female dominant or domina does just fine.

Ack.

I consider dominatrix to be professional -- like aviatrix for a female pilot.

However, I frankly hate both terms.

I'm a dominant and a sadist -- I don't need a special like add-on to dom to show I'm female. If folks can't figure that out on their own then I doubt they have enough intelligence to qualify to even be my friend let alone a member of my household.

For goodness sakes. I'll be a professor and author not a professoress or a authoress. Why would I need a special ending to clarify what is a personality or role type by gender?

OK, Mr. Rogers,

I like the Dominatrix one cause it is HOT to me. But then my thoughts aren't exactly what you are talking about. But it is a viewpoint, nonetheless.

Hear, hear! In addition to the fact that they deny the near-success of feminism in abolishing constructions like "lady doctor," gendered endings are linguistically yucky. One of the rare easy things about English is that it (mostly) lacks gendered nouns. Why, oh why do we want to make this language harder than it is?

However, while "dominant" is certainly better than "domme", I still don't like "dominant" as a noun. I am a "dominant person," or a "dominant woman," when my gender is important.

Lady Ellen, if I had to guess, the reason the term "Dominatrix" was used is because that term is far more widely known, thus increasing interest in the article, thus increasing readership. In other words, it was nothing more than a marketing tactic. Am I right?

actually Dominatrix is a very old term and it is derived from Latin. Domin as in dominant, and trix added as a suffix makes it female. As one above pointed out in Aviatrix.

but generally, in the D/s community, Dominatrix refers to a professional female dominant.

I usually think of a Dominatrix as a professional Female Dominant, but then I know of non-professional Female Dominants who refer to themselves by that term. I am a non-professional Female Dominant and usually refer to Myself as a Domme, but I also know professional Female Dominants who call themselves Dommes. And many don't like either term, as previous responses have already stated. So in My opinion, an individual should just choose to go by the term She prefers.
