I think very little has changed throughout time. Old people thing the younger generation are valueless and weak. Young people think older people are simple and boring. Ironically I think there is some small amount of truth to both sides :)... If you think back to when you were 16, were you as wise as you are now, was not the daily goal to do as little work as possible then go have fun?? If you are older,,, when was the last time you drove 100,,, just to see? Or got on your blades and did a full 360 just because your friend did it? When you were 18 you were passionate and certain you knew the answers to the worlds issues. If you are older,,, you now know better... Ironic isnt it????

Lorelei115. You are a rare exception in todays work force. If I worked with more dedicated people like you, I would not be stuck doing 12 hour nights insted of 8 to do someone elses share of work. Yes people over 40 can be lousy workers also.

I work 12 hours a day, 4 days a week, and earn a damn good wage. I work on a safety critical system, meaning if I am late, call in sick, or dont perform at my peak, people will suffer and people's lives will be endangered. Ive also owned 2 houses, served in the military, currently have a long term relationship, and operated successfully as an IT contractor under more contracts than most 40yr olds see in thier lives. My word is very important to me. I can not claim I have never broken it, but its rare. What really annoys me is posts similar to the OP's. I have been lied to, and cheated by members of YOUR generation and older, and yet I am mature enough to not make such sweeping genralisations. Why aren't you?

I was personally appalled that people could just not show up, it is so irresponsible, but it happens. However, not ALL younger people have this problem.

I use to work at a next day shipping place that gave incentive pay if you worked above the standard per hour piece rate. I liked that because you got rewarded for working harder then the next person. I wished they did not go bankrupt and close. Alot of warehouse shipping companys use the incentive system.

The company I work for now gives perfect attendance awards which I have received for the last 3 years. First 3 months you get 25 dollar Walmart card next 3 you get 50, next 3 you get 75 then the last 3 months of the year you get 100 dollar one and a Columbia Sports Wear jacket for the whole year. Not many people get it though they have no desire, to honor their obligation to their job. The hourly incentive I use to get only inspired 2 out of every 10 workers. They were just content stumbling around work like a lead-footed Herman Munster with Attention Deficit Disorder.

The ones that do not get the gift cards are always boo-hooing about being broke. If they did not take so many unpaid days off they would have money. I am not underpaid the overtime compensates me well. The supervisors on Salary bitch about the workers making more then them. They only want College Educated people for Supervision. They should be smart enough to not work for salary then. LOL.

It's been shown in a bunch of studies that todays youth values working to live over living to work, and to that end they are taking more time off, and demanding positions that allow them more flexible hours and the occasional free day. In order to attract the cream of the crop, a lot of employers are offering that sort of work environment. 9-5 mon to fri with no exceptions is becoming old and busted, and good riddance, I say. That being said, I'm part of the younger generation and I'm working something like a 10 hour day, but I'm sure that i'm not in the norm.

Wow. Such generalizations about this generation or that generation being a certain way are silly. It's all made up. In my view, every generation is pretty much the same. We're all people with, at the societal level, the same motivations. 5000 years of human civilization and you're telling me that the current generation is definitely the worst and laziest ever? For the record, I am 24, own a car, motorcycle, property, worked for two years straight out of college and was promoted past people literally twice my age, have run political capaigns, and am currently back in school studying to become a lawyer. Everyone in my law class of 20 somethings shows up every day having read approximately 100 pages of complex material, and nobody is even the slightest bit lazy.
