I just want to say hello to all of you.  I've been reading the forums for a while now (as a guest) and just signed up today.

I could not find any topics on fire play.  I would like to get into fire play and had been wondering if any of you have had any past experience with this or not.  Thank you.

The best fire play I ever saw was when my ex decided to light the bbq, even though I said the propane hose was blocked... needless to say, a fireball ensued, causing my ex to loose all arm and facial hair.

Moral of the story: eyebrows grow back faster than eyelashes. And Domme knows best.

Shoot that's crazy.  DO you know anything else? More geared towards fire play?

Please keep in mind, I am NOT a pro at this. This is what I’ve found from watching & talking with other people, and trial and error. Read what other people have to say, and DO NOT SKIMP on the safety precautions!!!!

Fire Play

Basically, you are burning the vapour of a chemical (rubbing alcohol), not the chemical itself. The burning of vapour keeps the flames (and the heat) away from the subs body, so that the subs flesh won’t burn.

HAVE a fire extinguisher, buckets of water, and a first aid kit for burns handy. Make sure the phone is within reach, just incase something goes wrong. Your embarrassment in not worth your subs life. Call 911 (or whatever emergency dispatch is in your area) if something does go wrong.

DO NOT

Use oils – very very bad idea. Rubbing alcohol is good.
Leave hair unbound – make sure it is securely tied back and wetted with water. Hair burns very quickly.
Tie a sub to a bed. It is a death trap waiting to happen.
Use locking restraints. I don’t recommend any restraints, especially when you are new.
Play with anything you don’t want to risk burning (ie gentitals, face). I don’t recommend playing with any part of the body that, if burned, will harder to heal (ie shoulders where bra straps are, waist where pants/skirts will rub).
Have the body part being played with facing down – burns with occur as heat rises. If heat is rising towards something, that something is going to burn.
Have overhanging body parts – same reason as above. So, don’t try to play with the area below/under the breasts, especially if the sub is standing.

DO

Make sure your sub isn’t allergic to the chemical you are using. Do a patch test first (rub some of the chemical on a sensitive area (ie forearm, inner wrist) and wait 24 hours to ensure no allergic reaction occurs).
Avoid areas that pool – you are causing a flash of flame, which will burn out before it burns your sub. If you ignite an area that has pooled (ie navel), the alcohol (or whatever you are using) will continue to burn and cause damage.
Start with small areas on large pieces of body (chest for men, belly, back).
Make sure the area is free of all hair.

How To Apply & Play

Use Q-tips to apply the alcohol (assuming you are using it). The cotton on the ends absorbs enough alcohol to cause a small flash. If you really need more, you can always re-dip it. Have a second Q-tip soaking in the alcohol – it will be used to apply the flame later.

Alcohol evapourates quickly, so make sure you have a candle lit before starting. Otherwise the alcohol will have evapourated before you get it lit
To start, take the first Q-tip and press it against an area of flat skin, which will squeeze out some of the alcohol.

Return that Q-tip to the alcohol and take the second Q-tip – make sure it’s not dripping! Hold it in the candle's flame - it should catch very quickly. Now move it to the spot of alcohol. Very quickly, tap it against the area where you applied alcohol with the first Q-tip and pull it away. There should be a quick flash before the alcohol burns itself out.
As soon as you are done, extinguish the second Q-tip (I’d recommend leaving it in a small bowl of water, just as you’d do with a match). DO NOT put it back in the alcohol - it may not be burning but it may still be hot and you really do not want to cause a large fire.

If the spot burns for even a second, swipe your hand over it. It will not burn you but it will extinguish the flame instantly. If the spot does not burn at all, that is probably because you took too long and the alcohol evaporated - try repeating a little faster. If it still doesn’t work, use a little more alcohol.

I hope this has answered some of your questions.

Nice post.

I would add one thing - do not play on plastic, such as exam tables that are faux leather. I prefer to place a sub on wool when I'm going to fire them up.

Oh...! But I didn't say why. Plastic will melt and stick to the skin, causing severe damage.

Wool doesn't ignite easily and resists burning better than other fabrics.

Below is a cut and paste (unedited) of a review for the first book on fireplay that I know of.

--------------
Flames of Passion: Handbook of Erotic Fire Play by David Walker & Robert J. Rubel, PhD
Reviewed by TammyJo Eckhart

Fire play is one of those flashing things we see in the semi-public dungeons and at play parties that always gathers a crowd. It is one of the edgiest and most dangerous forms of BDSM we can do because it involves something we can never claim to have full control over: fire. David Walker and Robert J. Rubel’s handbook about this beautiful, edgy activity is the first book to tackle the subject. Does Flames of Passion offer us something value or simply something unique?
Right at the start of this handbook, Walker and Rubel tell their readers that their book is not of the how-to variety and that you should learn to do this from someone who knows what they are doing. This concern for safety is evident throughout the book where important rules are highlighted in red ink and safety checklists are enumerated and repeated.
Walker and Rubel discuss the physical issues, the emotional issues and the technical issues of fire play. Overall the key to good fire play is TIA: time, intensity and area. These terms and concerns or repeated so that the reader can easily understand each step they are taken through.
Did you think there was only one way to play with fire? Wrong. This handbook covers 4 ways to safely incorporate dry-body fire play into your scene. The first is the baton method, the one I learned myself. The second is the fire glove which is doublely hands-on. The third is devil’s fire which uses heated needles. The fourth is flash cotton, which you may have seen in magic shows.
Each type of fire play is given it’s own section or chapter so that the unique safety issues and psychological goals can be discussed. The photographs in each chapter helped explain a lot of things better than mere words could but also reemphasized to me that this is a form of SM best learnt first hand. Walker and Rubel have been teaching courses on fire play for some time now so their approach is very lecture-like.
Finally there are 6 appendices which describe methods of making the various equipment you need, picking out the tools you’ll use and information about scene goals you may focus on in your fire play. As always I urge my readers to be wary of Internet sources cited because they can change quickly.
I learned about fire play in the semi-public dungeons and play spaces as well as in a small group of tops who were learning from a local practioner. I would never trust a top whose only learning was from a book but as Walker and Rubel say repeatedly, the book is not to teach but to be a reference. As a reference it is a great guide to the basics about safely and performance that can refresh a trained top’s memory.

Dr Rubels Book is fairly good and pretty complete on all the basic fireplay and a few more advanced techniques.

It's fairly safe if done right. Fairly.
Please learn from a human with experience, not a book. It's on a whole different level than say, bondage.

I would add that you want to make sure that the alcohol you use it the 70% rubbing alcohol, not the 90%.  With the 70% it doesn't stay burning long enough to actually burn the sub, whereas with the 90% you could get an accidental burn.
Whoever is doing the setting on fire should try it on their own arm to test their technique first.

If the area to be set on fire has not been shaved, you will get the burning hair smell, though burning hair off can be an effective way to get rid of it.  It will add a more prickling or stinging sensation, however.

Contrasting fire with ice or cool water can be lovely.  The cold will usually also feel like burning at first.  If you like wax, that can be combined with fire play too.  (remelting the wax after it has hardened)

Just be careful and always have water nearby. Make sure hair is pulled up securely and won't fall into the fire too.

Have fun!

Fire Play: After many Many Years of Playing with Fire. I for one Can say DANGER!
Practice on yourself before you try on others. Learn the Directions of Heat and Flame..  The Liquid is NOT  what is Burning, it is the Gases and Vapors that the Liquid Omits...
70% Rubbing Alchohol Runs a Cool Flame but if you want to start with a Cooler temperature flame add 151 Rum...

A cool Flame will produce a Blue color,  hot Flame will produce  yellow and orange colors. for Hotter and more Colorful Flames, you can use 90% rubbing Alcohol... For the Most Colorful and the Hottest, Add K-1 Fuel or Parafin to the Alcohol... Not Recomended for use on Skin,  but Great for Fire Eating ,Breathing Fire....

I do make Fire Wands For sale. for more information contact me at dommatteo on collarme
