HI,
We do a lot of fireplay and have done demos and classes, thus we have compiled a lot of information on safety and technique.  It is too long to post here.  I would be glad to send it to you off list.  Please note that I do not read the lists very often and then I forget where a thread is when I want to go back and see more ... duh!  So if you would like to correspond off list about fireplay it would work best if you click on our profile and send me a note that way.
I would say a couple of quick things here for everyone.  First and of utmost importance fire is a living, breathing thing.  It is a third player in your scene.  It cannot be trusted to play by the rules. It is the one element that absolutely will find a way to create a "scene gone wrong" story for you (oh dear, that gives me visual memories of Daddy just trying out some new firebatons I made in size HUMONGEOUSNESS ... think of soaking up maybe a pint of alcohol ... lighting them and riasing his arms up over his head - outside - now think burning flames of alcohol running down his arms as he stands with upraised arms!   remember it is not good practice to double over with laughter as your Dominant person flails his flaming arms! - No Dominantes were actually harmed in the making of that visual).  We have more fire-run-amok stories but again no real harm done other than to egos!
Everyone who plays with fire will have their own warnings, cautions, favorite materials, positions, styles.  I would never try to use fire before I had seen it done and had the chance to actually talk to someone who does it.

All the cautions and caveats considered ...   omg! Fireplay!

Adding salt to the alcohol will lower the temp and change the color of the flame, making it much easier to see. Just keep the alcohol with the salt separate from the alcohol without the salt, so you know which is which.
Also, thanks for the tip on the plastic/vinyl melting onto the skin. Makes good sense.
