Well, the Georgia Tech game is probably going to be a loss for me, so I'm sort of considerng us all tied at this point. They're starting a guy at quarterback that has taken four snaps in his carreer, all last year. I think there is a chance we may all three lose the Auburn vs. Nebraska game. Auburn has some issues with key players. We probably should wait to make our picks next year.

I didn't get to watch the game last night, but was told that the officials handed the game to Punk-Ass U on a silver platter.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NCAA Bowl Schedule (1/1/2007 10:28:34 AM)

No, I don't agree with that, but I did decide that Miami is deficient in talent.  All in all, Larry Coker has to be considered a poor recruiter.  He won a championship with someone else's players, and as he started bringing in his own guys, his record deteriorated every year.

Edited to add: Oh, and there were a few picks I would have liked to revisit too, but a pick is a pick.  The bookie doesn't do mulligans, after all.

He's taken a few more than that--and more to the point, he has 131 yards passing after the first quarter!  Fuck.

Well Katylied!!  Penn State got lucky. Can't help wondering how it is affecting you right now. Your not really going to accept that victory are you?

caitlyn -> RE: NCAA Bowl Schedule (1/1/2007 3:15:50 PM)

Well, you can not agree with it all you want, but I've now actually seen the highlights. The fumbled kick they reversed and gave to Miami was very questionable. If that's considered forward progress, there would almost never be any fumbles at all. The guy was only stopped for a split second, even in slow motion ... and the really bad one was the one that guy caught between his legs that they didn't overturn. That was clearly a catch. The ball never even came close to hitting the ground. The closest it ever got was about a foot. Auburn got screwed out of a touchdown on that simultaneous catch. I'm glad they ended up winning. This officiating is getting as bad as the NFL. Nobody could ever convince me that last year's Super Bowl wasn't fixed.

I'm not having a very good day today with my picks. I'm not sure, but I think we are all tied or something. I picked too many upsets I guess.

Isn't the International Bowl up for grabs?

Lordandmaster -> RE: NCAA Bowl Schedule (1/2/2007 7:23:52 AM)

I take China in the International Bowl, but the statistics are sometimes hard to interpret.

caitlyn -> RE: NCAA Bowl Schedule (1/2/2007 9:10:30 AM)

I think you and Level already have Cinci ... and I have Western Michigan. [;)]

Level -> RE: NCAA Bowl Schedule (1/2/2007 9:29:39 AM)

Yes, I picked the Bearkats (don't know why, had to pick somebody lol), and I have LSU and Ohio St in the final two games, I think.

cloudboy -> RE: NCAA Bowl Schedule (1/2/2007 2:25:39 PM)

What happened to Michigan?

caitlyn -> RE: NCAA Bowl Schedule (1/2/2007 2:56:16 PM)

Nothing happened, other than they got beat by a team that played better that day.

Everyone wants to make super teams this season. Some seasons you have teams that are clearly better then the rest. This isn't one of those seasons. These teams are really even. I picked USC because they were at home, and I didn't think they would lose two home bowl games in a row. I also went to see Michigan play Nebraska in San Antonio last season, when Michigan didn't look all that interested ... and though they might play that way again this year.

How did USC ever lose to UCLA? I'm willing to crown USC the 2007 or 08 National Champion right now.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NCAA Bowl Schedule (1/3/2007 2:40:10 PM)

I still think Ohio State is the best team in the country, and I still think Michigan has more talent than USC overall.  I picked USC because I didn't think Michigan matches up well with them (I was right) and I didn't think Lloyd Carr was as innovative a field general as Pete Carroll (I think I was right).

As for where Florida ranks in there--hard to say, but we'll know more after the championship game.  Oh, another team with A+ talent is LSU.  Deep down, I suspect that Les Miles is winning with Nick Saban's team, and that LSU will decline over the next couple of years.  They should have won more games, and competed for the national title, with the talent on that roster.

Level -> RE: NCAA Bowl Schedule (1/3/2007 3:17:52 PM)

Speaking of Nick Saban, he's ditched the Dolphins and is headed for Alabama.

You are completely right that he's winning with Saban's players, but you can look at the free section of rivals.com and see that LSU had a killer recruiting class last year, and is having another one this year. LSU will always have players. They're a pretty good football state with only one big time college team.

I think it will be more interested to see how Saban does recruiting in a state that also has Auburn and a few other big time teams that have made some serious strides into that state. Lou Holtz was just saying on ESPN, that he had a good gig at LSU, and you can bet that all those other teams would be telling recruits that Saban is a guy you can't trust to stick around, even when the teams is winning.

KatyLied -> RE: NCAA Bowl Schedule (1/3/2007 5:36:55 PM)

He may stick around for awhile.  They also said he has bowl win incentive dollars on top of that nice salary.

Lordandmaster -> RE: NCAA Bowl Schedule (1/3/2007 8:24:55 PM)

You can't go by those lists.  Take Florida State, for example.  According to rivals.com, FSU's national recruiting rankings for the past three years were:

2004: 3
2005: 2
2006: 3

Then why do they suck so bad this year?  They're stunningly untalented (read: fucking slow on defense), and looked like they were going to lose to UCLA until the fourth quarter.  They wouldn't even have been playing UCLA just a couple of years ago.  I don't know exactly what's wrong with FSU (it seems complicated), but anyone who has watched them this year would have to agree that their roster is missing top talent.

As for LSU.  They absolutely sucked for several years until Gerry DiNardo took over in 1995.  You're right that they don't have much competition in Louisiana, but it's certainly not the case that they always have great players.  And there's a substantial difference between being a 8-3 type regional power, which is what they usually are when they're strong, and being a 10-0 contender for the national championship.  Before Saban's championship in 2003, their last one was all the way back in 1958.  So I have to say, I'll honestly be surprised if Les Miles wins 10 games next year.  We'll see what happens.

Edited to add: Another example.  Look at Ohio State, which is clearly the most talented college football team on this good earth.  THEIR recruiting rankings over the past four years have been...

2003: 41
2004: 9
2005: 12
2006: 12
2007, for good measure: 16

All those teams that have supposedly outrecruited Ohio State these past four years are sure getting their asses pounded by them.
