uponmyknees -> What is branding? (2/16/2005 2:45:29 PM)

I met a nice young lady, just recently who said she would like me to stick around. She suggested branding my thigh with her name on it. is this what i think it is??? A hot poker like with some sort of lettering on it and then driven into my skin, leaving a burned impression on my leg? OUCH!

Yep, that is one way to brand. There are others.

Quite a turn on for some...myslef included.

Yep, just like livestock.

Why did you post a question you already know the answer to?

knkywch -> RE: What is branding? (2/16/2005 3:46:33 PM)

A guess is not the same as knowing the answer. I'm not sure that branding has to be ONLY with the burning of symbols into flesh... Nowadays, you never know whether a term has morphed to mean something else. My sons say, "that's sick!" and now "sick" isn't just cough cough, sniffle sniffle -- it's the same as "cool" or "neat" -- not necessarily "cold" or "tidy".

My two little pennies...

Congratulations on your find and on your approval by her. I remember you were experiencing some frustration in your search. Personally I would worry if it might be a bit early for permanent marks but I suppose branding is both cheaper and quicker than a tattoo.

i have a brand on my right shoulder . its a cut that "keyloid". it was given to me by my last Master . i love it and run my fingers over it all the time.
thanks for the spell check :o)

MadameDahlia -> RE: What is branding? (2/16/2005 6:50:34 PM)

Some people use red hot irons... other people may choose to use a surgical laser.

I intend on having a small, custom made brand with my initials entwined in some small bit of artwork.

I'll also be looking into the purchase of a surgical laser.

I think keloid was the spelling you were looking for! :)

I guess another branding technique is using an electrocautery. It is a device that creates large electrical currents that arc from the tip of a pen. There is a website that shows and describes a guy giving three rings done around one of his calves.

Aliljaded1, does your keloid have a shape to it?

I've never heard that referred to as branding before. I've always known it to be called scarification (or cutting). I'm a big fan of it...love all of mine.

suberic -> RE: What is branding? (2/16/2005 8:13:40 PM)

Yeah, scarification is one way to make a permanent mark. Branding had the advantage of making the mark, and cauterizing the wound all at once. The downfall of branding is the shock that the branded goes into almost immediately.

A cut can be handled by the person cut, and some can handle several. The "shells" that some in voodoo have on their face/neck/back is ritual scarification, made by hooking the skin with basically a crochet hook, then a razor slices on the captured flesh, and that leaves a scar that looks like a shell.

Branding, from what I have seen, is done either with a hot iron with the stamp in the shape of the desired design (my CO in the army had two, one on each forearm in the shape of the the Omega, for his fraternity) and I have seen some intricate designs drawn with either a wood burning set or soldering iron (alther there is a tendancy for the flesh to stick to the iron) and I have seen a small piece of sheet metal (about one inch square) held in vicegrips and heated with a blowtorch, the edge buring the freeform design into the person being branded.

For any of these, the goal is the scar that is left, so unfortunately, while medical attention should be paid to aleviate things like the shock and other problems such as infection, not a lot can be done for the actual wound until a while has passed. Generally at least 12 hours or so. Some topical antibotics or local anesthetics can be used, but not wound care like Silvadine cream for a burn, that would fix the problem and prevent the scar.

I would HIGHLY suggest seeing a doctor's advice who is lifestyle friendly for advice, but some common sense precautions should be taken.

Aneseptic conditions (washing the tools, washing the area to be branded or scarred, cleanliness of the person performing this, a local anestetic to prevent skin and invoulentary movement), well lit working conditions, NO alcohol imbibed by the one to be done to (since it will thin the blood and allow for more bleeding) and guarenteed conscent.

I would also suggest that you keep in mind that this is permanent. I know it's obvious, but I know of many who think they want it, but forget that it's not easy to take off when the relationship ends.

Personally, I'd rather go with a tattoo. But I have also really wanted a brand at one point.

pandoravampire -> RE: What is branding? (2/16/2005 11:56:19 PM)

I adore branding, and have seen some spectacular celtic ones in the UK. If i were the sort that hankered after a tatoo, then id be easily talked into a branding. But permanence is a niavitee for the young i believe.

aliljaded1 -> RE: What is branding? (2/17/2005 6:00:56 AM)

not really its a its a straight cut about 3 inches long . it feels like a "bubble". it took a long time to heal. but it didnt really hurt.

Tbelle -> RE: What is branding? (2/17/2005 9:36:49 AM)

IMO branding is a mark given by your owner as a mark of possesion, for most the word branding does conjure up ideas of hot pokers and the smell of burning flesh but for me branding comes in the form of a tattoo that Sir gave me, its a small tat on my ankle, slave in japenese and while I had some misgivings about a permanent mark I cannot describe how it felt having it done and how it still evokes very strong emotions to this day.
it used to be that Sir would have to grab a fist full of my hair and yank it to pull me into line (I get bratty) but now all he has to do is lightly trace his fingers over the design and I melt, everytime.

when asked by 'nillas for its meaning, I say it means freedom, for in my mind that is what He gave me when he collared me. There are no guarentees in any relationship so if you do consider any kind of 'brand' be sure you give consideration to its implications should the relationship cease, the last thing you need is ________'s bitch inscribed no matter how ornately accross your chest when presenting yourself to someone 'new'.

as I said, just my opinion xxx

I went to TES30 specifically to see Raelyn Galina do a branding demo, because branding has always fascinated me. The demo "victim" had never been branded before and they did a multi-strike brand (25+ strikes, iirc). It was the constellation Orion, with a point brand for each star and line brands connecting them to show the shape.

The demo bottom showed no signs of shock and even said that the pain was very minimal. I've heard that the nerves are pretty much instantly killed, so that may be true.

Maybe it's simply that Raelyn is so incredibly skilled at body mods, or maybe it's just differences from one "victim" to another, but I hung around for the better part of an hour after the branding and the demo bottom seemed completely fine, not shocky at all.

I've seen close to 30 brandings and I can only recall two participants that showed any signs of shock. Some were small 3 or 4 strike brands or ninimal cautery designs and some were *huge* and the process took a couple of hours to complete.
