SusanofO -> Nick Names For Your Pets (Animals) (12/10/2006 6:39:19 PM)

Do you have nick-names for your pets, if you have pets? What are they?

By "pets" I am referring to non-human pets, like cats and dogs, or hamsters, etc., not human pets (although I realize they may have them, too).

I talk to my dogs all the time, and even though I chose their names, I still tend to use nick-names. Maybe it is my maternal instinct in over-drive, I don't know.

Some of my pet's nick-names, (I have two dogs, a Beagle and a Lab mix), are:

1. Mommy's little angel dog.

2. Wonder Dog!

3. Amazing Poochie.

4. My angel with fur.

5. Snuggle pup.

6. Rufus the Goofus.

7. Osca-baby.

8. Mommy's baby angel dog.

9. Puppy poochie sweetie pie.

And the list goes on.

Why do we do these things, do you think?

- Susan

I do ! [:D]

I have two cats one's nick name is : The girlie girlie, and the others is: KizzyCat.

I have no idea why I give them nick names either, but have always had nicks for pets.
Good question. Now you have me thinking as to how this came to be.

We just must love 'em, I guess. I love it that they have fur, too! I just love fur, and petting them. They get so excited when I come into the room. I spoil them rotten, too. But somehow, they remain very well-behaved (I am lucky that way).

Mine don't.  Slithers and scales for me.

I raised one particularly lovely albino of my namesake species (Naja kaouthia) that got dubbed Pink Thing when she was little, because she really was.  Translucent shell pink too; shine a light on her and you could see her heart beating.  She's much bigger and older now, more solid white with just hints of yellow and pink, but the name stuck.

She's also a bit of a nut case, always active and crazy especially when people are around.  ("Ooooh look, it's people, people bring food, I might get fed, do you have food for me do you do you?")  I once commented wryly to a friend that Pink Thing just never knew when to quit.  He snickered and said, "Yeah, my boyfriends say that about mine too." I have two cats also, a male black cat and a female orange tabby cat. We call him  'kitty kitty' if he's good and 'little fucker' if he's been an asshole. We call her 'miss thang' cuz she was born in a very high class part of town and she's quite prissy too.

I have a friend who has a cat that sort of thinks it's a dog, I think, because it was rasied with puppies and no other cats. It eats its food standing like a dog, and sort of tries to bark at people (except it's a loud "meoww"). I think it's funny, and kind of cute.

I have an English Bulldog (who currently lives with my folks). She gets called Chubbamafeefee when I'm talking to her on the phone, Buddy or Da Bud when I get in, and Princess when she's being bad and I've had enough (her actual name is Princess Piglette). If I'm talking about her and I don't want her to know, then she's Rumproast. [:)]

DiurnalVampire -> RE: Nick Names For Your Pets (Animals) (12/10/2006 7:07:34 PM)

My St Bernard answers to about everything but her name.  Her name is Bailey, but she is caled furball, fuzzbucket, beast and baby girl more than she is by her name.  Funny thing is, if given a command under any of them, she listens. And its only been about 3 weeks...

Hehe. It's nice to know I am not alone in talking baby coochie-coochie talk to my pets. Oh I think my dogs understand many words, too, I really do. They are smart pups.

I don't exactly do that, but I've been known to tap my snakesters gently on the nose with the hook or nab them by the tail and say "Naughty naughty" when they get all huffy and puffy with me.  Not that they can understand me or even hear me (snakes = no external ears), but I find some of their behavior amusing enough to comment to myself on it.

WyrdRich -> RE: Nick Names For Your Pets (Animals) (12/10/2006 7:22:01 PM)

My animals all get a "full' name I can use when they are in trouble.  The wolf-hybrid is Hiro most of the time, but when I need to scold him, it's Hiroshima (and that is usually what the mess he's made looks like).

SusanofO -> RE: Nick Names For Your Pets (Animals) (12/10/2006 7:28:59 PM)

I gave Oscar a middle name: Constantine (actually, that was my late husband's idea). Rufus doesn't have one, though.

Re: Snakes - I forgot they have no ears. But they probably still know you feel affection for them (maybe).

Chloe (the whippet) I call Crazy Legs or Klutz because she gets going on these tight little spins when excited and then trips over herself and goes sprawling like an out of control top. The look on her face after it happens is " I sooo totally meant to do that" as she limps off to another room.

Sammy (the new greyhound) has the full name of Sammy Dean Sinatra ( I have a wee little Rat Pack obsession) his nickname is Sammy Two Toes. He has 2 toes on each foot that are pure white on a caramel and black brindle body. He also has a way of sitting up very formally that we've anthromorphized into him being a Mafia Godfather with this look of " You want I should get up and go outside? I will do you this favor but remember this, because someday I will ask one of you." not to mention he's as big as a small pony (big even for a grey) and when he wants something he'll headbutt you until he gets it.

ownedgirlie -> RE: Nick Names For Your Pets (Animals) (12/10/2006 9:48:49 PM)

I don't currently own a pet but I was house sitting for my aunt & uncle for 6 weeks and watching their little pooch, Tani.  I never liked small dogs before.  I never liked that dog in particular.

In the six weeks I was there, I gave her treats all the time, let her sleep on the bed, and talked to her as though she were my own flesh and blood child.  In short, I became simply infatuated with that sweet little dog.

Nick names I gave her (mind you, I never do baby talk stuff):
  • Poochie woochie puddin' pie
  • My little butter cup
  • My little vanilla bean
  • Tani (aunt's maiden name) (aunt & uncle's last name) - said crossly after she got into the halloween candy
  • Babykins
  • My little biscotti
  • Sweetness
  • Amarretto girl
  • Silly nilly

Yep, I admit it.  I'm going to be one of those kinds of pet owners.
