I wouldn't mind some feedback on the expression in my profile pic. What does it convey? Does it qualify as a smile or not? I know what I'm doing in the pic and how I'm feeling, but I'm less sure of how well it might be translating to other folks who see it. Especially since this version of the pic doesn't actually show anything other than the facial expression.

I think it looks like you are focused on "someone". Not knowing who that person is creates a mystery that could draw people in. The question them becomes: is it drawing in the people you want to be drawn toward you?

The pictures that turn me off most are those that look sad or pathetic more than calm or strong (or even intense if you are in the top role and want to project that but then I'm not attracted those in the top role so my judgement of their pictures is likely very different).

On my website I have more pictures that show me in different "roles" but I think I look cutest when I'm smiling and I have gotten many emails on here that mentions my smile positively so for me, I guess the bubble bath happiness was a good choice.

I try not to smile because then the police might recognize my picture.

I actually just listened to a graduate student give a final paper presentation on the literature involving why interpersonal communication often leads to situations where smiling is frowned upon, for lack of better wording. There's a belief in a lot of communities that people who smile look ridiculous because they are not used to seeing themselves smile very often. As such, they frown when they take pictures, because they are used to seeing that reaction in themselves and don't want to look ridiculous (even though they don't really). Even I don't smile that often in pictures. I'm just as guilty as everyone else.

Is this similar to how we think our voices sound? I can barely recognize myself on tape -- I think I sound like a baby -- because my voice sounds much deeper in my own head. Yet, in situation were a baby voice would be very bad (like teaching a college course) I have no problems which suggests that my voice isn't babylike except to my own ears.

I don't know what my pic says to people when they look at it. I was happy at the time though. When I look at some of the profile pics I wonder if they were just spur of the moment pics or posed pics. I think I prefer the spur of the moment pics as you catch part of a persons personality showing through sometimes.

Pics that catch my eye? People and their pets in them as I'm an avid animal lover (no not the wierd kind).

To me your picture looks inviting -- like you are responding to someone calling out your name and you are pleased to turn and see it is them.

I don't think my photos actually really say anything about me. I just wanted a portrait photograph to get a visual image of who I am. I don't think I have any "spur of the moment" photos at all, since all the pictures I have of myself I knew someone was taking on.

Yet, I do know what you are saying about what the picture says about the person. I've seen this one of a dominate female who is on all fours and the picture is of her backside. It almost looks more of a submissive pose then a dominate one. I always wanted to ask her about, but didn't want my words to be taken wrong.

By the way, I think my photo gives the impression that I'm a geek. Which might not be too far off base. [;)]

Hey, some folks like geeks and I see a smile, a contented minor upturn of the corners of you lips so it works for me.

I didn't intend for it to come out negative. I'm proud of my geekdom. (Is that really a word.) My last Mistress I met while playing a play-by-email Star Trek game. She said she could tell that I was a sub by the stories I wrote. I had to go back and reread them and see what she saw! Frankly, I still don't see. [:)]

Najakcharmer,

I think you hit the nail squarely on the head!  I love to read your posts...you are an interesting and engaging person...and that photo indicates that!

I also remember why you have it as your main pic...and I like that, too.  You're a beautiful woman and that's obvious in both photographs...

MsB

PS... TheTammyJo...just how old ARE you in your profile pic?  I love it...

Geekdom is sexxay.  :)

Almost off topic but ...

I have the wonderful task at work of updating a sexual predator bulletin board with pictures of the ones within 3 miles of our building. I am always amazed at how many of those fucks are smiling in their mug shots.

LaTigresse -> RE: Profile pictures and smiles (12/15/2006 11:04:17 AM)

My favourite photos are the candid ones, followed closely by a face photo with a genuine smile. I hate the "I am trying to look tough/sexy" variety because they just look silly. My least favourite are the "here, look at my (insert naked body part)" ones. Ick, eww, gross, No thank you!

I try to smile in all my pictures.

Hey, some of us artists are critical and tough to please.

BRNaughtyAngel -> RE: Profile pictures and smiles (12/15/2006 11:24:03 AM)

If I try to smile big while posing for a picture, it looks all fake.  And I hate my smile anyway.  I have short teeth, so if I smile big, you can see my gums and I look totally goofy.  So if you get me to smile it's usually a small one or a smirky grin. [:)]

BRN, your photo is just lovely as it is.

It's from a few years ago I believe so I'd be 34 or 35 then. My husband and slave say that I look much younger though and my students can never guess my age, they routinely think I'm in my mid to late 20s.

To me, your photo shows something in your eyes that tells me you are very attracted to the person who took the photo.  Its the photo of a woman who is warm and sensual, and I'll just stop at that. [;)]

Its often very difficult to take photos with your pet in them.  Most of my dogs have tended to look like Cujo because their eyes glow when their picture is taken with any kind of flash.  My current dog, which has a very dark face but a lot of personality, is hard to capture in a photo because it requires a very high contrast; something nearly impossible to do when its taken next to my pale faced skin. LOL!

Thanks for the tip though, I'll have to experiment to see if I can get a decent one of the two of us to add to my profile.  As I'm usually the one behind the camera, I don't have hardly any recent photos of myself anyway. [8|]

CalliopePurple -> RE: Profile pictures and smiles (12/18/2006 12:15:12 AM)

I don't like having my picture taken, but when it is, I make an attempt to look something other than mad at the world. Before I took the one up right now, my previous one was really poor quality and showed me after I'd hacked off all my hair in a depressed fit.

People don't have to be smiling to catch my attention, they just have to look something other than evil or crazy.
