ORIGINAL: Voltare Well, I don't agree - the woman wasn't driving, and it sets a precedence for a similar lawsuit against a mom & pop business to lose their business, house, and car because of an identical lawsuit. The real issue is that there's no regulations on the temperature of served coffee. Having worked a few food service jobs, I can tell you there are LOTS of other regulations - from the minimum cooked temperature of meat, to the maximum temperature of frozen or fresh foods and beverages. Instead of writing your congressman and trying to actually create law, we're opening the door for punitive, retroactive laws to be penned by angry juries who see 'evil' McDonalds on one side, and poor old Gramma Leibeck on the other. But I suppose that's just one more benefit to living in a society where it's ok to steal, especially from the rich, as long as it isn't your wallet that's being pilfered. Its not "ok" to steal in our country, WTF are you talking about? Your "mom and pop" argument is spurious. Believe me, Mom and Pop are a lot more worried about Walmart, Home Depot, Loews, CVS, Applebees, and Barnes and Noble than they are about trial lawyers or civil actions. In truth, the trial lawyer is one of the last bastions of the individual in our country wherein an old lady can take on McDonalds and win. How you see this as "bad" I don't know. Lastly, you can't defend selling beverages heated to over 180 degrees. Corporate giants like McDonalds should know better. It doesn't bother me one bit it found out the hard way. Just the opposite, it shows me our system is working.
