quote:
ORIGINAL: Petruchio I'm a libertarian, but I never understood how 'liberal' got to be a bad word. Ours was a nation founded by liberal thinkers. Change for it's own sake isn't a good thing. Our nation was founded by people who didn't want to pay taxes, and reasoned they should have more of a say in local affairs. If they had waited ten or fifteen years, they probably would have. History, of course, is written by the victors - had the revolution been crushed, we'd still be singing God Save the King, and the 'Founding Fathers' would have been celebrated footnotes in the book of English Traitors (and there would be Benedict Arnold Ave in most major cities.) I wouldn't say there's anything wrong with being liberal. I'm very liberal socially - people are happiest and most productive, when their daily lives aren't regulated and monitored. I'm also very conservative, fiscally - the money we earn belongs in the pockets of those who earn it, not in the collection plate to pay for the president's private jet and mayors' limos. I believe in strong local authority, with strong federal oversight - state's rights should trump federal interests, but feds should have discretionary powers, when invoked by individuals (and in reality, I think our modern age of information means we could reasonably do away with congress as a whole, and institute direct democracy, through regular debate and 'voting' sessions by every registered voter, through a system similar to the electoral college.)
