Ron, why ?  b/c the cops chasing you have to take the jughandles to make the left-hand turns, and that takes more time ?

Really, what is the big deal???? Laws are made for a reason.... drama is so old....   my sister was fined $110.00 for tossing a bud out the window.... Oh boo hoo.... She littered...

Status: offline 		i have a hard issue with seatbelts, i am to short to wear them with out being in a booster seat (that sucks) so we go a holder it holsters it down a few inches so its not cutting off my head.

Status: offline 		i'm in full agreement that you, as an individual, should be free to choose whether or not you wear you seatbelt - providing the people working for the emergency service are also free to exercise their right to choose when it comes to whether or not they feel like cutting you out of your car or scraping you off the road - not forgetting the rights of social services to chose whether they deal with any kids you may have left behind.

i'm with NG - civil liberties are wonderful, providing they're teamed with at least a smidge of common sense and respect.

Status: offline 		what about the people who are decapitated (hope i spelled that right) by seat belts..? I guess if it's your time to die there is nothing you can do about it whether you wear a seat belt or not...but I will wear one for now on, for nothing more than to help assure I'm here for a long time for my children...as for the littering, I never knew they would give you a ticket for throwing a cigarette out the window?????? I am big on save the enviroment but damn...that's a bit extreme don't ya think?

I am well past the age of legal majority, no longer have any dependents, and am insured up the wazoo...if I choose not to wear my seatbelt, that should be my decision. 

But then, it is my opinion that there is too much government in our day to day lives.

Status: offline 		i believe it should be up to the individual. i own one car that has never even had seatbelts installed in it (a 1963 model). i also ride motorcycles (i do wear a helmet, by choice). It's not the .gov's job to be my mother, father, or wetnurse. FWIW, i believe that our society could do just fine if we reduced the number of laws on the books by 2/3rds or so.

I'm all for enforcement of wearing seatbelts but not to the point that they are being done so today.

Back when they became mandatory in Michigan,  the deal was that you would be given another ticket for not wearing a seatbelt when you were pulled over for something.  But you couldn't be pulled over for simply not wearing a seatbelt.

NOW,  they can pull you over if they THINK you're not wearing a seatbelt.  That drastically changed the playing field.  Maybe it's not so in other areas,  but in New York state I saw a LOT of cops using the seatbelt law to pull over people simply in the hopes of finding something else to nail them on.

* That damned guy has an anti-Bush sticker on his car.  But he's opening the speedlimit and following the rules of the road.  Let's stop him for "not wearing a seatbelt" and see if we can get him for something on 'discovery' *

Status: offline 		I agree razor,in new york they can peer through the windows of your car and pull you over for not wearing a seatbelt, thats no different than peeking through the windows of my home to observe my activities.

What if you are a safe driver but everyone else on the road isn't?  If they only granted driver's licenses to the ones with brains, no, we wouldn't need seat belts. 

What i find rather silly is wearing a seat belt on an airplane, like that would be a benefit in a crash, but i wear it anyway.

Who pays out the money for the fact you’ll need special care for the rest of your life?

Does it not set a bad example for younger people who look up to you?

I could probably think of loads of other reasons given enough time.

Also it’s nice to feel wanted.

I actually went to court when the law went into effect in Va and beat it. The judge said he had never dismissed a charge like that before.

I use to not wear a helmet when I rode in Md on My 1968 650 Bonniville Triumph

you might want to pay that ticket now...they are kinda like the IRS...they come after anybody and with occured interest.

Status: offline 		eyes if you wear it properly,  ie tight an in correct position, in cases of severe turbulance it could keep you from flying up and smacking your head on the overhead.

As for how an adult's decision affects their kids, what hang-gliding? Or motocross racing? For a seatbelt ticket here, it's $110.00, unless it's a warrant, then add $50.00, and add $259.00 if you fail to appear, and $30.00 if we put you in Omnibase to keep you from renewing your DL, and finally, tack on 30% of all the previous to cover the cost of the state-mandated collection agency fee.
