I totally forgot that about 2 months ago I got a ticket for not wearing my seatbelt, and I was only a passenger in a car...I feel it should be MY decision whether or not to wear a seatbelt, after all--it's MY life, right? As far as children are concerned, they should have to be wearing seat belts at all times...The ticket was like $45.00 of course I ignored it...then forgot about it lol...now I got a warrant out for my arrest unless i pay $80.00 so I guess it's time I give the state of New Jersey their Christmas gift.....seatbelts, do you think it should be YOUR decision whether or not to wear them?

Sorry, Krissi, but no.  Of course, it's your life, but your life affects other people.  What about your boys?  What happens if you get hurt?  And, ok, your kids wear seatbelts (and I am glad) but others may take it too far and decide that not only they, but their kids don't have to wear them either.

point well made. i guess it's because they are so uncomfortable for me that i don't like wearing them. since i got the ticket, however, i began wearing them..and you made a great point- i will wear them for now on, my kids DO need me[:)]

Seat belts are supposed to save lives, and motorcycle helmets are also supposed to save lives.  There is research to demonstrate and support both the wearing and the not wearing of each.  I think it is a political football, and it will be passed here, there,and everywhere.

I think it should be my decision to wear whatever personal protective equipment I deem necessary for the activity at hand.  That the various levels of government have gotten involved seems to be less in the public interest as it is in the public coffers interest.  It makes money, and that is what drives our government and economy. 

I wear seat belt and helmet when required by law, just to avoid enriching the Governmental Coffers.  Those already get too much of what I work for.

As a side-note, I'd love to be the arresting officer in your case.  I think you would look so wonderful in handcuffs.

I agree with bandit. If you go flying through the windscreen who's going to look after your kids and why should other people have to go through the trauma of seeing your mangled body lying in the middle of the road with your head smashed in just because you can't be arsed to put the seat belt on. It's common sense just to put your seat belt on and save yourself and others unnecessary problems. You're right, it is your life and the best way to live it is to do yourself a favour now and again.

I wear seatbelts for my safety, but I don't think that cops should be on the roads harrassing me about it; nor should they make money trying to keep me alive.   So yes you should wear the seatbelt, but I don't think it should be a law, or one to be enforced with $80 penalty.     M

I dont like wearing seatbelts either, but I wear them.  And most of the time, its my son reminding me to buckle up.

M, call this the British in me but I think it should be enforced. People who have no regard for those around them need their hands holding until they get their act together.

I'm all for civil liberties providing they are used responsibly. Flying through a windscreen has an impact well beyond the person who goes through the windscreen.

It is your choice to buckle up or not. However, if you choose not to you may end up paying a fine,dead, or worse a vegitable on life support.

Six years ago today, I was in a car accident. A drunk driver went to merge into the center lane(the roads where wet) he hit my front drivers side tire. I lost control of my truck and rolled 5x's. When they pulled me out of my truck, they expected internal injuries. My sons car seat was unbuckled and sitting on the back seat (he wasn't with me) it had flown throw my front wind sheild into on coming traffic. I am reminded every day of how lucky I that I was in my seat belt and that I walked away with only minor cuts and bruises.

Plus, if you're lucky enough to be scraped off the road with your life in tact then why should tax payers have to pay for your stay in hospital just because you couldn't be bothered to look after your own saftey (presuming you would be eligible for health care funded by general taxation).

I think Billy Connolly got it right - even if he was joking.

Forget seatbelts.  Forget crumple zones.  Forget all other safety measures in cars.  Just put a sharpened 12" metal spike in the middle of every steering wheel, and the roads will suddenly become a much safer place.

you're lucky you don't live in Chicago. that $45 tix would have cost you $75 here plus whatever fines / fees / couurt costs to find you on that warrant.  Chicago PD love doing their random traffic stops checking to see if you (and/or your passengers) are wearing your safety belt and not chatting on your mobile (have to use a hands free device if you want to chat on your mobile). if they catch you chatting while driving expect a $95 tix

Yes I firmly believe in safety belts and motor cycle helmets. Both in the wearing of them and in the legal enforcement of such.

One of the benefits of a seat belt is they hold you in place so that you can possibly avoid a worse accident by continuing to maintain control of the vehicle.

Does it mean we are supposed to wear seat belts in our homes expecting earthquakes? I f you are sensless or reckless driver,i dont think seatbelt can save you .On the contrary if you have brains and training,you dont need it or do you?
