For those who have a tough time with spelling, it's worth giving Firefox 2.0 a try.  For all your posts, you just right click in the text field, click 'Spell Check This Field' and enjoy the benefits error free English (other language dictionaries also available.)

You know firefox has no security whatsoever.  It is spywares best friend.
As well as hackers now that it has gotten popular.

Don't blame Firefox for Windows deep down flaws. ANY software used on a shitty windows box is vulnerable.

Me? I trust FIREFOX more, where you can go look at the trouble tickets, and their resolution, rather than the horking box of crap which Microsoft offers up...

Worst case, with Firefox, you can fix it yourself.

Funny,  I've been using firefox for years (back when it was still firebird and before) and have had ... zilch happen to my systems due to hackers or spyware.  My roomie would did't like the way FF looked refused to go with anything but IE.

Her system would be continually littered with spyware trojans etc etc etc

Firefox isn't bloated like IE,  It prevents popups out of the box ( something IE didn't until their "new and improved" version 7.0 ) allows for personal customization ... I could go on.

Well constructed Firewalls,  Decent antivirus proggies ( I said decent.  Not shite like Norton which is more viral than most of the stuff it's supposed to block.  Try Avast! ) and spyware blockers/removers like Adaware ... All mandatory things for someone on the net.  Regardless of their choice of browser.

Thanks for posting this link.  I tried checking for updates first via the browser and it said there weren't any - so your link completed the step.

I use mcafee's SiteAdviser (.com) in my browsers and the firefox 2.0 didn't support it.  So far that's the only downside I've seen to it.  I've added some of the add-ons available and so far it seems pretty workable.

I like the level of customization you can get with firefox - and the significantly less amount of spyware since I started using it.

I'm looking forward to using this updated version.

On the recommendation of a good friend who is a programmer/developer, I've been using Firefox for a couple of years and have been nothing but pleased with it... up until this week.

They've released an update for Firefox 2.0.0.1 and it's got some issues.  They aren't hard to fix, but I was still disappointed that I had to do so.

Then again, when you think about what has to go into developing a program that will work with the vast hodgepodge of systems, hardware and software out there, it's amazing that there aren't more problems.

All in all, I'd highly recommend it.

p.s.  I used the spell check for the first time on this post.  Thank, Voltare... I wasn't aware of the feature and it's great!

Hmm.  Why Firefox sucks ass...

It is the slowest of the three main browsers.

It has patches released for it every other day almost to fix flaws, bugs and vulnerabilities.

It is every bit as vulnerable to the newest threats because they now use Javascript instead of ActiveX to exploit your browser without you even knowing it.

It is a memory pig and a sloth.

The plugin to make it run faster gets you locked out of servers for trying to hit them twice at the same time.

It has no ActiveX so you can not access half the multimedia and interactive content on the internet.  And for no reason, since ActiveX threats are not used anymore.

It is a pain in the ass to code a website for it.

It does not display half the websites on the internet properly, even though it supposedly adheres to the W3 standard.

It is a pointless waste of harddrive space.

How so? The limiting factor in the web is bandwidth to/from the server hosting the content?

On what planet would patches be considered a BAD thing?

You misspelled WINDOWS ARCHITECTURAL PROBLEM.

Aside from the adblock issue, what tickets in Bugzilla are you referring to?

Your problem with the webserver operators is Firefoxes exactly why?

I challenge your assertion that ActiveX threats aren't an issue. Provide citations.

Yeah, standards suck, don't they.

Yeah, that's right. DO the Sites?

If you're so tight for space that 20 megs are an issue, you got other problems...

I can not squabble..  S/he has no idea what they are talking about, so how am I supposed to have an effective squabble.  *sigh*  I mean, the fact that I do it for a living, and have been a webmaster for countless years, not to mention that one of My main focuses is computer security, allows Me to know that that entire post was pointless jibberish.  It is kind of disappointing actually.  I am all for intellectual debates, but at least know what you are talking about so I have some material to work with.

One example..  javascript is an architecural problem?  On which planet?

Another.  Servers breaking connections with browsers that are hitting the server too many times to prevent DoS attacks?  That is a server problem?  On the planet I live on that is called covering your ass.

One more.  And the rendering engine being completely fucked?  That is the webmaster's problem?  Obviously this person has never coded a webpage worth speaking about in their life.

20 megs could be spent on something more useful.  Like the Recycle Bin.

I couldn't possibly say anything about the acuracy of farglebargle's post... I honestly know nothing more than my own personal experience with Firefox.

I will, however, put forth that while you indeed appear to have ample professional qualifications with which to make a judgement on Firefox, I'm sure that the individuals who developed, promote and support it are equally qualified.

Which side of the coin has more value?

That would put you in the web in 94. That's plenty generous isn't it?

No, don't blame FF for Microsoft's deep architectural problems. That means, briefly, everyone running as root.

Actually sandbox your users, and java's sandbox works just fine.

I like Firefox. Might not know all the technical differences, but I know that it worked better than IE on my dinosaur computer that was running Windows 98SE and it's not giving me any issues so far on this nice new juggernaut.

JAK, do you have a link to/more info on the antivirus software you mentioned?

It is not that they are not qualified, but you have to remember that Firefox is open source.  Many people contribute to it.  The biggest problem with Firefox is that it is not a standard.  As much as they would like to be, they are not.  Internet Explorer is the standard.  The web standard.  W3 would like to pretend to be the standard, but they are not.  The web belongs to IE and that is all there is to it.

Now, as Firefox becomes more popular it becomes the target of more attacks (and there have been a zillion exploits of Firefox so far).  The code is available to anyone, so a hacker can create an exploit at their leisure.  Even should all the numerous people working on it completely cripple Firefox, it will always be exploited.  The thing is, it is partially crippled now and it still gets attacked almost daily.  I have a very wicked website that I test browsers and security programs on.  Firefox fails the test miserably, and so do half the malware programs out there.

Firefox is for fanboys and rebels without a cause.  That is about it.

Wow, I feel like I've just seen two ghosts!  Suze, sub, howya been?

That out of the way, my intention is not to start a browser war.  IE and Firefox can happily co-exist next to each other, and any good web designer will test their work on all major versions of all browsers in different resolutions.  I tend to avoid any software advice with the word 'suck' or 'ass' myself, but to each their own.

At any rate, my techie advice is to

a) backup your system regularly
b) avoid visiting no-no sites (warez, cracks, serials, porn, just about anything that says 'free')
c) if you're stressed about security vulnerabilities, check out a little program called 'sandboxie' - http://www.sandboxie.com - running any program (IE, Firefox, Email client, etc etc) inside a sandboxie protected window will prevent damage to your computer.

Viruses are not as irritating as people trying to tell me what browser I should or shouldn't  use.  Kenin, if you really want to get in a golden showers match over which is better, I suggest you do it in private, so as not to embarress yourself.

Genius.  You backed My point up perfectly.  You have no technical facts to back you up, so you attack a spelling error.  Way to go ace.  Thanks for backing Me up.

By the way, it is not java, it is javascript, there is a huge difference.  No point in arguing with you.  You have no clue what you are talking about.

I am sorry.  Did I come across like I care?  My bad.

I do code for all three.  But it is a nightmare.  And most webmasters do not, because it is a nightmare.  Firefox is a piece of garbage for fanboys.  Now, Opera on the other hand is not only much nicer, but it does not take a software engineer to optimize it to perform.  Unlike Firefox, it performs top notch right out of the box.

Firefox is pointless.  I have it for webmastering purposes, but it is pointless.  I absolutely hate it.
