juliaoceania -> Started South Beach... Ugh! (12/27/2006 10:55:12 AM)

Asking for some input from those who have went on low carb diets like South Beach. I am on Day Two now. I seriously over did the carbs on Christmas in prep for this change in my eating habits.

I noticed pounds creeping back and exercise seemed to just make me hungrier. I also have such highs and lows with my energy I realized I may be becoming insulin resistent... everyone in my family craves carbs... so we all went on this at the same time.

I can't have fruit or bread products, potatoes or rice, or cereal for two weeks. I am surprised that I am not that hungry, but I am seriously out of sorts mentally, has anyone else experienced this? What was your overall experience if you have tried low carb.

Juliaoceania,

It is not at all unusual. Your body is going through withdrawls just like if you were to quit any substance you were accustomed to like getting cranky and out of sorts when stopping smoking. It will last a week or so while your body readjusts but once its done you'll find your overall energy level climbs and stays on a more even keel. I did Atkin's 2 years ago and was quite successful at it. The only problem came later when I developed gallstones and had to have my gallbladder removed. The first question my dr. asked was if I had been on a low carb diet. It seems that a higher fat content of the low carb programs will contribute to the development of gall stones. So I am on a modified lower carb approach for the weight gained post surgery.

I watch the Glycemic index of the foods I eat more than the carbs. I use half butter/half olive oil for cooking and use whole grains etc. to add in good carbs rather than cutting them out all together which is similar to the later steps of the South Beach approach I believe. The great part is that there are alot more low carb products out now than there were 2 years ago.

Personally I had the hardest time with pasta being removed from my eating habit but Dreamfields has a low carb pasta that is fantastic and isn't quite as cardboard tasting as some of the wheat ones. On either plan the initial weight does fly off just don't get too frustrated when you hit a plateau. When it happened I would cut back onto the initial 2 week suggested foods and then remodify what I added back in.

Best of luck and hope it helped. There are lots of great low/no carb products out now to help make it easier when you start adding them back in.

julia, congratulations on your attempt to be healthier!  I did Atkins after my daughter was born and I lost 30 lbs in a month.  It was a great jump start for my body and I learned quite a bit about carbs and sugar and what they do to me.

I was a little out of sorts as well for the first week of the diet.  My blood sugar plummeted and I had very little energy.  I was extremely tired and it seemed like nothing I did would help.  Because Atkins suggests staying away from caffeine, I thought I was going to be tired and crazy for the duration of this diet.  I did exercise daily, and eventually (about a week into the induction phase) I started to feel normal again.  I slowly regained my energy, and it came back even better than before because my blood sugar was not in constant flux.  I believe that daily exercise is really the only way to maintain a healthy energy level.

I remained on the induction phase for a full month, and realized just how addicted I am to carbs and sugar.  As a result, even 6 years later, I am more aware of what I'm eating and how it will affect me.  I try to balance my meals better, being vegetarian makes the protien a little more difficult, but I do make sure that I have some protien at each meal and try to keep the carbs low.

My advice for you when you begin to add some carbs into your diet, is that you experiment with the low carb options that are available to you.  Most of them take some time to get used to, but they are a lot better today than they were 5-6 years ago, and they will allow you to have more flexibility in your food choices.

E-mail Proudsub on the other side.  She lives on the South Beach and with excellent longstanding success.  She is literally an encyclopedia on the diet.

Thanks everyone for your responses so far.

I will email proudsub!

I quit smoking almost two years ago, and the way I am feeling is very similar to how I feel right now, so a day at a time. I am reading the South Beach diet book and I am in about the middle of it. I do not think I could do Atkins, even though to do it for a month seems like it would be very effective after reading what sugars do to a person....

It kinda sucks having to give up yet one more addiction, but at least my coffee and red wine are safe on South Beach!

I hope others share their experiences.

Atkins died of the Atkins diet...they released that I believe last year.  Very unhealthy diet to do long term.
Short term...great success but long term death.
As long as Proud has been on South Beach if if were that bad for you...she would be having health issues as well by now.

I'm a neophyte on both diets beyond reading their respective books.
Never tried either, just read about them.

cagedbutterfly -> RE: Started South Beach... Ugh! (12/27/2006 12:31:57 PM)

I have been on South Beach for the past three months and it has been very successful for me.  One thing I have learned is to drink a lot of water. It sounds crazy, but the more water I drank, the better I felt.  Also, the energy level does eventually even out to the point where I have at least twice the energy I previously did.  I overindulged on Christmas Eve and Day and have started back on Phase 1, so I know how you feel right now.  Good Luck!

Humans were not intended by nature to eat high carbs.

For information regarding the accidental death of Dr. Robert C. Atkins click here...

It was later released that the Dr. did have heart disease but it was never definitively linked to the Atkins diet.

juliaoceania -> RE: Started South Beach... Ugh! (12/27/2006 1:10:38 PM)

I can say this much, from my reading I have learned that high carbs/low fat diet has done nothing for Americans except increase heart disease and diabetes. Replacing fat (especially the good kind of polyunsaturated) with sugars was extremely bad. It will take me a while to get over the brain washing that everything with fat is inherently evil.

sub4hire -> RE: Started South Beach... Ugh! (12/27/2006 1:22:37 PM)

There is evidence to support both he died of cpmplications of a fall.  Also evidence to support it was a lifetime of unhealthy eating.

No autopsy was performed because the family declined it.  We will never know the truth...beyond that of our own research.

I think diets like you mention are beneficial for some, but I like my way better:

Sit down, be happy, eat whatever the hell you want - Then get up from out of the chair and exercise and beat your body with physical excursion till it all burns off.

Good for you Julia, the time I did this, after the third day I was quite broken of my addiction and did wonderfully well while I was disciplined to it.

I've been contemplating this again, but am not sure I'm at the point to stay devoted.

Zensee -> RE: Started South Beach... Ugh! (12/27/2006 2:52:45 PM)

My understanding is that the low carb diets are based on the Neolithic Diet theory -

http://www.earth360.com/diet_paleodiet_balzer.html
http://paleodiet.com/

In short, modern agricultural foods (less than 10,000 years old) are not only inappropriate sources of nutrition for humans but they are also contain "anti-nutrients", toxic chemicals produced by plants to prevent predation. This is why many common starchy foods must be cooked to release their caloric energy and to disarm some (but not all) of the toxins.

It also suggests that common food alregies (peanuts, wheat, corn...) are the result of people losing the ability to overcome the anti-nutrients in those agricultural foods.

good luck on your diet sis...I have struggled with my weight all my life...i hope it works out for ya

CalliopePurple -> RE: Started South Beach... Ugh! (12/27/2006 10:45:16 PM)

Good luck with your diet. Both of my parents have weight problems (though I seem to have inherited skinny Swedish genes and can't gain weight even though I want to) and they had success with modified Atkins. The hardest part for my stepdad to get was that he couldn't eat carrots. Too much sugar in them.

Friggin Christmas cookies every where I turn.
Think I'll have to join you.

Julia,
Wow, just let me tell You how much i admire Your ability to stick this through right now. i did my "own" version of Atkins three years ago..Which means basically, i stayed on the induction phase...not the healthiest choice or decision for me...It had great success though, i lost like 50 pounds within three months or so..It was awesome..
The biggest problem (and i remember this clearly) is the withdrawal phase. Your body literally goes through withdrawal from carbs. My withdrawal generally consisted of: exhaustion, headaches, tiredness, etc.  Although everybody's different. Usually by day 5 this passed for me.. Although this guy i work with (grrr!! men!!) usually had like 150% more energy by like day three or so..It always annoyed me greatly...
i'd love to be able to join You even on South Beach, but unfortunately now i'm on a medication which does not support no carbs or even low carbs...For some reason it makes me violently ill to do that..But i wish You all the success in the world... And please feel free to email me if i can be of any assistance to you.

juliaoceania -> RE: Started South Beach... Ugh! (12/28/2006 9:24:14 AM)

I am sorry to hear about your medication problems.

I am on day three, and before I woke up this morning from a dream I accidently had sugar on some cornflakes. In my dream I freaked out because I am not supposed to have that. So I am thinking I must really need to stay on this thing. I had a headache the first day, and I have been slightly cranky, but I am sticking with it.
