Hi LAsub and thank your that interesting and enlightened look at defining experience.

Yes on the surface one would assume the bookworm, soaker of knowledge would be a safer bet than the dabbler on the side thinking corr I could give this a go, I've seen it in action, yet having no understanding of what is going on behind that action.

I think I would re-define those things as an 'interest' ...ie I have had a passing interest in BDSM since blah blah blah, or I have an avid interest in BDSM since blah blah blah.

I am very inclined to agree with You. Certainly begining with an understanding of the appopriate motivations and limitations is a huge advantage. Experience without understanding is like mathematics without numbers.
