Pay attention to syntax, or your sentences may be awful pretty.

Musicmystery -> RE: Writing Twisters (1/21/2007 7:44:28 PM)

Speaking of syntax, how about this classic from "Blame it on Rio":

I invited my girl to visit me. I sent her a postcard everyday, with a single word on each card. I wrote: "Found a virgin paradise, it's yours, Matthew." Naturally, they were delivered in the wrong order. The message she got was: "Found a virgin, it's paradise, yours Matthew."

Go around the barn at high noon to avoid colloquialisms.

Make sure your sentence a verb.

You shouldn't answer a question with a question, should you?

Musicmystery -> RE: Writing Twisters (1/26/2007 7:42:29 AM)

When describing the relationship between three or more things, use among.

Musicmystery -> RE: Writing Twisters (1/26/2007 3:57:00 PM)

Do not read this sentence.

Musicmystery -> RE: Writing Twisters (1/27/2007 3:24:01 PM)

Since the beginning of time, people have opened their writing with broad, absurdly inaccurate claims.

Musicmystery -> RE: Writing Twisters (1/27/2007 4:58:34 PM)

To write good, don't confuse adjectives and adverbs.

Musicmystery -> RE: Writing Twisters (1/29/2007 5:21:41 PM)

Parenthetical remarks (however relevant) are unnecessary.

Parenthetical words however must be enclosed in commas.

Joe and myself don't use reflexive pronouns to escape deciding which subjective or objective personal pronoun, I or me, to use.

[Another pet peeve particularly annoying to "myself"]

They say pronouns should demonstrate specific reference.

Musicmystery -> RE: Writing Twisters (2/3/2007 1:16:55 PM)

One should avoid one's tendency to write technically correct, but tediously vague sentences, lest one lose one's readers through one's blatant pretentiousness, shouldn't one?

darchChylde -> RE: Writing Twisters (2/3/2007 1:21:09 PM)

Carefully proofread your work to make certain you haven't out any words.

goodlittlegirl28 -> RE: Writing Twisters (2/3/2007 1:23:14 PM)

And don't start a sentence with a conjunction.

dcnovice -> RE: Writing Twisters (2/3/2007 1:25:17 PM)

And don't start a sentence with a conjunction.

Oh God, that one comes up at work all the time!

Musicmystery -> RE: Writing Twisters (2/4/2007 10:36:11 AM)

Avoid excessive subordination, since such a string of dependent clauses will ultimately prove confusing, even though modifiers are generally fine if clearly marked with commas, because readers will get lost in the list of what modifies what, although they could probably figure it out eventually, which is something readers should not have to do.

goodlittlegirl28 -> RE: Writing Twisters (2/4/2007 8:35:36 PM)

Explain.

dcnovice -> RE: Writing Twisters (2/4/2007 8:40:33 PM)

use capitals as needed unless you are e.e. cummings
