Whenever possible, writing in the passive voice should not be done.

Musicmystery -> RE: Writing Twisters (2/8/2007 5:53:33 PM)

Do not use hyperbole; not one in a million can do it effectively.

Musicmystery -> RE: Writing Twisters (2/10/2007 6:15:27 AM)

An otherwise good sentence can be ruined by a weak, vague phrase at the end, in a way.

Comparisons are as bad as cliches.

PoisonRoses -> RE: Writing Twisters (2/11/2007 8:48:20 AM)

you are not finished unless you have inserted your dangling participles

Musicmystery -> RE: Writing Twisters (2/12/2007 5:48:10 PM)

Place pronouns as close as possible, especially in long sentences, as of 10 or more words, but especially so in longer sentences, to their antecedents.

It's alarming how frequently I see resumes and cover letters with sentences like this one:

I'm a very good editor, and I have a good eye for detail's.

Numbers between one and ten should be written out, those larger than 11 put in numbers. But if you have to use both, don't mix formats!

Do not put statements in the negative form.

Sinergy -> RE: Writing Twisters (2/23/2007 4:09:48 PM)

Make multiple one line posts.

Musicmystery -> RE: Writing Twisters (3/3/2007 1:34:49 PM)

Write all wrongs.

Musicmystery -> RE: Writing Twisters (4/16/2007 3:04:48 PM)

OK, OK--I can't resist one more....

Clauses starting with "which" or "who," which are often used by writers who are careless about their sentence construction, are wordy, often just adding unnecessary subjects followed by the verb "are"; just cut them and say the same thing.
