I am beginning dieting *again* and I need to drink lots of water, I am told. My question is this, if you add flavor to the water does it still count the same as drinking it without? I guess what I mean is will it have the same benifit? I absolutely hate water and forcing myself to drink water makes me feel nauseous but with the flavor added its tolerable.

That depends on the flavoring agent, if you go with sugar free it won't add calories. But if you are trying to 'detox' any flavoring that is premade will be adding some kind of chemical. Go with a slice of lemon :)

I don't buy 'detox' - we have too many chemicals in tap and spring water as it is.  Taking a bite of any food today gets you a mouthful of chemical compounds most people can't even pronounce.

So, water.  Adding sugar free kool-aid is fine (long as you don't mind the nutrasweet.)  Adding natural or concentrated juice works too (though like anything, in moderation.)  Soda is generally bad, because of the sugar.  Soup is a great alternative, long as you don't have a problem with salt.  I sometimes cook up a cube of beef or chicken broth.

Point is, it doesn't really matter how you get the liquid in your stomach, your stomach will seperate it all out.  What matters is what you aren't putting in - namely fat, sugar, and too much salt.  Hope that helps.

i read somewhere (i wish i could remember where) that adding anything to water makes the stomach digest it where the stomach does not go through digestion to process pure water.  Drinking water should be to hydrate and therefore not add anything to it.  Mistake a lot of people makes is the "8 glasses" thing, thinking it means a tall glass of water when it normally refers to eight 8oz (one cup) glasses of water.  Most people can easily manage that amount without having to force themselves.  If water makes you feel nauseous, suck on ice chips throughout the day should still give you the same benefit.  Just an idea.

I have used a slice of lemon, lime, some fresh mint if you like that...or go with some naturally decaf herbal tea and add some lemon, lime or mint

I'm a lifetime water hater myself.  But I've learned that when I force myself to seriously drink nothing but water for a few days, I become quite used to it and can go from forcing myself to downing a half liter to eagerly going for 2 liters within just a few days.

Unfortunately I can just as quickly revert back to my pepsi and lemonade fixes.

I love water; in fact, when I'm thirsty, only water will do...  From Dasani being my favorite bottled, to tap as long as I don't taste anything else in there.    M

You do know, of course, that Dasani is bottled tap water.  Dasani's own website confirms it, in the FAQ.

Going on advice from my mother...over the year's I've asked a great many doctors as well.  Some go with her, some don't.

In any event..when I was a small child she had a kidney infection.  Didn't drink water..the doctor's told her either drink it or else.  So mom being the person most are started drinking tea, lemonaid and kool-aid.  After all they started as water.
Kidney infection did not go away and she ended up in the hospital.  Again the doctors told her straight, plain water.  You cannot add anything period.

When she did that..she got better.  Now, I have asked many doctors over the years and as I said most agree then some don't.  Some will tell you as long as it started as water it is still water based.  Others flat out say..no it is no longer water.

Going from my own standpoint.  I love water and it is the only thing that quenches my thirst when I am thirsty.  Adding anything to it makes me even more thirstier.
Sugar is definately not good to quench a thirst with.

The key as to water is "reverse osmosis" .

Never pay for the pretty bottle.

No sugar-- no carbonation, no sweateners of any type

i drink 90+ oz a day.

70% of people walking around are dehydrated.

a tad of lemon i dotn think would hurt.

But most important is to HYDRATE.

we in the west have been conditioned to not drink water. 70 yrs ago- the folks knew to drink. they were healthier for it.

i cant stress how important it is to hydrate! water is LIFE.

Personally, I drink a lot of water.  I keep a 1/2 liter glass and a two liter pitcher next to the computer.  I can easily go through four to six liters of water a day.  I also go through a few cups of coffee (give or take) and a half liter of beer (sometimes more, sometimes less - gretchen and I are regular beer drinkers.)

The trick to drinking water is like LA said - just do it.  Keep it nearby, and take a swallow when you notice it.  After a while, it becomes an unconscious thing.

To detoxify your system you can drink distilled water for a week, but it is not a good idea to continue longer than that because water has minerals as well as pollutants.
