i got an e-mail from someone the other day who obviously had not read my profile as he was from the other side of the country which i state clearly in my profile is not something i am interested in. Nevertheless i saved it with the full intention of responding with something along the lines of "Thanks, but no thanks". However, before i could get back to it, i received another from him telling me that the reason i hadn't found anyone was because i had bad manners and that not responding was bad form, blah, blah, blah. So i e-mailed him back and gently reminded him that he didn't know me from Adam and shouldn't presume to know my intentions or manner and that if i had not responded to him YET it was only because i had not had the time. He responded by telling me that everyone knew i was just a guy with fake pics who was only here to get my rocks off and that there had been posts regarding this. Then called me a douchebag and blocked me. LMAO! So in so far as feeling OBLIGATED to respond to anyone....please excuse us girls if our give a damn is just a bit broken at this point! i used to try to respond to everyone, but as has been stated previously the number of e-mails to respond to, at times, is completely overwhelming and 90% of them are from men who either have not read our profiles and/or are just plain jerks.

I guess I am in the minority here, looks like along with the OP. ___IF___ I/we get an email in response to one of our profiles that reads as if the sender actually did read the profile I go look at theirs. If it looks interesting as well, I will send a positive response. If it is marginal or not very interesting to me/us I send a polite "no, but thank you for your interest" note. So far I/we have actually never had a rude response to that and even have a couple of "thank you for at least sending a reply" notes back. At times if the person emialing me/us is rude, shows no class, has a blank profile, or obvioulsy did not bother to read any of the profiles then I send a short, not terribly polite response. As a person who does send "hello" notes to others with interesting profiles and tries hard to be polite in all of them, I agree that you wonder if the other person read the note you sent, if you offended them in some way, if they thought you were creepy, or whatever. If you don't have the time to respond then set up one of the auto responses. To me the exception would be the ones who say in their profiles they do not respond to unwanted emails, then you should not expect a response. If I am walking down the street and someone smiles and says "HI!" - do I "owe" them a smile and a hi back? No. It is polite to do so anyway? Where I was raised it is. Holding others up to "my" standards of courtesy is not the same as generally accepted politeness and good manners, which is something that is seriouly lacking in society in general today, IN MY OPINION ONLY! Yep in fact yours truly argued this very point but i cannot find it so in summary. As you can see this is split right down the middle. You have the basically polite and courteous people on one side of the fence and assholes on the other. The courteous people will try to answer some one with something if its obvious that the writer is reasonably genuine, profiles have been read, not a form letter, not a 1 liner, etc etc etc. Of course there is a host of LEGITIMATE reasons NOT to respond to an email. These people have a very diffeent and often positive experience as compared to the other side of the fence with hey fuck you, "aint no law so i aint gotta do it" approach. i think the key is to understand the difference between who is a troll and who is not and of course when a thread like this pops up albeit 3 times a week, many will ASSUME that you are sending out 1 liners, or otherwise not following the requests of the profile rather than ASKING, or giving you the benefit of a doubt, that just maybe you really are sending legitimate responses to the people who are truly being unjustly discourteous to you, and they chose not to respond because of a host of reasons ranging from the color of your tie to the background setting of your pic, and believe it or not quite often NOT respond as a result of their own fault for NOT giving proper information in their profile in the first place. Welcome to the wonderful world of internet dating... Granted there are many more out here who deserve to be ignored in triplicate than are remotely genuine, i wont dispute that, but there are also many who do not deserve it and discourtesy is being dished out unjustly. BTW i send out tons of one liners, not as a pick up line or expecting a response back, but just remarking on something and i get responses back better then 50% i would guess,,, i applaud the courteous and those who make efforts to be!
