ORIGINAL: DigitalNoise Sweet! Hmmm...I need to do some shopping... Anyone have recommendations for a first time Dom's toy chest? Ie. what are some must have's, etc? Words to live by: "Don't buy junk - you'll only throw it out". That said, you don't have to spend a fortune. Specifically what you get will depend on your personal interests. Since you mentioned rope bondage, I'd recommend "Jay Wiseman's Erotic Bondage Handbook' as a really excellent start on addressing skills and safety. You can buy rope at Home Depot or Lowe's - look for something fairly soft and washable and thick. The most economic way to buy rope is buy longer lengths and cut down yourself. I personally don't find lengths shorter than 15 feet to be useful. A good "workhorse" piece to have in your bag is a deerskin flogger. While you're starting to learn, it can be a satisfying thump toy that won't harm if your aim is not perfect; as you progress, it's always a great scene starter/sensual toy. This is the piece to invest money on at this point - check out http://www.detailstoys.com/low_inten_floggers.html for reasonably priced and well made deerskin floggers - a medium length tail is listed at $75, but you should also consider a double thick tail at $110. I have a lot of DeTails floggers and they are well constructed and well priced. Find yourself a local tack shop and peruse their selection of riding crops. I don't much care for the cheap crops with narrow slappers (the leather or plastic piece at the tip), but for a few dollars more you can get a good one with a wide slapper. Keep in mind that riding crops can be rather intense toys to use. From your local dollar store: clothespins, candles, GummiCuffs (apparently), a rabbit fur, a sleep mask (read: blindfold), boxes with snap on lids to keep some of the smaller stuff in. You probably want to get yourself a bag to keep everything in. If you're lucky enough to have a Wilson's Leather Outlet store near you, I've found them to be a great source to get affordable leather duffel bags - I got a lovely one for about $20 recently. Wilson's also has good clearance sales. Places like TJMaxx and Marshalls also often have good bargains on bags. At this point, you might want to add a paddle or leather slapper to your collection. I always recommend www.thelondontanners.com as well priced and durable. Basically, "that will get you started". Add to it pieces that fit your personal interests as you go along - another flogger, leather cuffs, etc. If you have any questions, feel free to email me on the other side.
