I think my own view in this is closer to Portia's. I like Portia's idea of the sub wearing a collar that indicates some commitment to me, even before the relationship gets to a point where I make a strong commitment to them.

For my preferences, though, if a collar item is generic and unspecified, I don't mind a sub buying it for themselves. As long as it doesn't have anything that identifies them as Mine. However, I would be rather annoyed if they went out and bought themselves a collar item that had my brand or initials or symbol on it, without my permission, taste and input involved in it.

I would never buy my own collar in the same way I would never buy my own engagement ring.
I would, however, go out and pick out the collar myself once I'd been told to.  I have no problem with being instructed to find something to wear that I find pleasing and meaningful.  But a collar is (generally) a symbol of something, and it seems odd to buy it for yourself, especially without the knowledge of your partner.

i haven't been collared as of yet. i've wanted to know what it feels like to have one on though. i've wanted to have a collar so badly but i always feel like it is wrong for me to buy my own collar. It has too much significance in my mind. i don't even like wearing chokers because it reminds me too much of a collar. It holds the same value to me as a engagement or wedding ring. i wouldn't go and buy one of those on my own.

I think that you can buy it your self but its a little different when he/she buys it for you it in my opinion has a little more value

My Master purchased my first collar for me.  Later, He had me design a perminent collar (He gave me certain specifications) then He had me take the design to the jeweler and and have it made.  He also gave me the money to pay for it.  He likes to do things like this with me.  He will often tell me to go to a "toy" store and pick up a specific toy or order something online.

Cordially,

Professor bought my formal collar, but i have bought my own jewelry.  i had several choker sytle from my younger days when chokers were the rage.  They were convienent because i could coordinate them with the outfits He chose for me to wear.   He knew i was searching for the perfect "everyday wear" collar for months.  When i finally found what i was looking for, i bought it.  i knew He would approve and He was very pleased.   He would have bought it for me, but i saw it first.
