Does this make me a racist, or is it an understandable preference?  What's your opinion?

I will take a crack at this.

Do you  immediately think that somebody of a certain race or ethnic or cultural group has certain attributes without knowing anything about the person themselves?  That would be racist.

Do you dislike cultural attributes of a particular individual(s) who are flying gang colors, slapping their hos, rapping, speaking in ebonics, whatever?  That would be a personal bias.

The question is whether you judge everybody of a certain kind to have certain attributes, or do you base your judgements on the attributes a specific person has?

Hey Tre I have always enjoyed your post, you are good at explaining your feelings and are not afraid to start a thread that is off the beaten path a little. [ Just like me sometimes lol, just you express yourself better.] You will start to feel more comfortable in time, with the people your uncomfortable with in the workforce, because you cant avoid them, you will get to know them better. You do not have to like everybody though, I might talk to people that cheat on their spouse and have no honor, but I would not allow them in my inner circle that is for sure. It does not matter what race you are or how much money you do or do not make there are snakes out there across the board.

Tre,

It's tough to learn another language, especially if someone came here when they were a little older. You probably took Spanish, French, German or whatever in highschool and I doubt if you can hold any kind of conversation with it. You're young and your memory is probably better than some older immigrant's.

But in a way you are also right, some people come here and refuse to accept our customs and only associate with their own kind. Too bad.

Good point..........but most Americans would probably bust their asses to learn a language if they knew they were going to LIVE in a foreign country for an extended amount of time.  What I see from a ton of these people is piss poor effort, failure to assimilate, and pure apathy.    If I were going to the People's Republic to reside for the remainder of my days, I would memorize as many of those fucking weird-ass written characters as possible.   Maybe if we sent some of our illegal "no longer south of the border" immigrants to China with specific instructions to "learn as little as possible about the native culture, and be able to communicate with NO ONE", somebody might get the point.  At least I have to hand it the Mexicans..........most of em' make that Spartan effort to actually LEARN our tongue.   You know what we be even better?   How about we send them off to fight in Iraq in exchange for their citizenship?  At least we won't have to send REAL citizens off to fight a lousy, never-ending war, when you've got choppers full of fresh illegals arriving in the desert every day.  Hell..........we could make a reality show out of it.
"Habeeb, Mohammed, Akbar........meet the Valdez brothers."

If you've got to send half the population of your drug-haven, corrupt, poverty-stricken country to ours illegally, they should at least look something like this: http://www.ruggedelegantliving.com/a/images/Mexican.bathing.suits.jpg

I would be waiting at the goddamn border, waving Mexican flags in both hands if that were the case.  "Send em' on over, guys.  We've got plenty of room.  You want a green card, honey?  I hope you've got a good tolerance for pain and jaws that don't tire easily."

Anyway, yes, human psychology contains a significant streak of provincialism, and we become conditioned to accept certain things as "right" and other things as "wrong", part of what you might call our "cultural aquisition device", adn it's mot confined to any particular cuture - the French are even more notorious than we are about linguistic "purity".

It may be useful however, to remember that English is a borrowing language, half of it comes from "foreign" sources, and it adds new words all the time - words are just symbols to describe things, and different languages and dialects often describe things that are difficult or impossible to say in English, or to say without using a dozen words instead of one.

Schadenfreude is Germand word signifying the act of taking delight in the misery of others - takes Seven word in English to relate a very common psychological phenomona signified by a single compound word in German - try to track down the etymology and meaning of "traipse" - it conveys a very distinct sense or tone than "walk".

This to me, is fascinating, you can learn a lot about a culture by it's language - language describes thought processes themselves - is there a Chinese word for "slut" for example? Itf there is, and there probobly is, it will describe the entire cultural attitude towards the persom to whom the label is being implied, which might not be all that different from ours, but with some subtle differences.

Further, words themselves change meaning over time - "slut" doesn't mean the same thing it meant a hundred years ago, it doesn't really mean quite the same thing it did last year.

Anyway, the only way to overcome this sort of cultural agorophobia is to expose yourself to the alternative - think of it as anthropolgy. "Ebonics", as it's called disparagingly now, what used to be called "Jive", is an incredibly rich and expressive dialect tha is in a constant state of flux - you could devote and entire career just trying to keep up with it, and it's as American - more American than English, almost more English than English - try to decipher Cockney or Glaswegian - 'ow doya fancy yer skoosh?

You wanna blow somebodies mind, eavesdrop sometime and find out what they call you.
Language is like a direct route into a persons consciousness, the entire paradigm of how they view the world - why limit yourself?

There are worse things than personal growth - you could be getting shot at by Islamic fundamentalists or soemthing. It can always get worse, knowledge is the only protection. I get uncomfortable around "different" people too, I'll tell ya, White people flat freak me out sometimes, and I'm so White I glow in the dark.

On that subject, maybe I can persuade some of the Brit contingent to provide some examples of slang, I love that shit - some of that shit is impenatrable.

Oh, I seriously doubt that. Didn't it emerge from the Iraq Study Group report that we have only six or so fluent Arabic speakers in the embassy in Baghdad? And that's the foreign service! I suspect many Americans bank on being able to get by in English.

A most perfect response in my opinion!   I would imagine that when you think like this, you don't have to worry about all the "isms", because you accept all people as people, you (generic) respect them as you would like yourself respected, and you find that you learn a great deal more than you would by doing what you always do within your own comfort zone.
I suppose I envy tres on some level, in that I would never have the audacity or real ability to say "these people" are invading my space/comfort zone simply by existing where I am, doing what they do, and being different...   At least not unless I were inside my house.    M

I do have a problem with people who have just stopped giving a shit I must admit - life is long, but it ain't that long- if I can't get a gleam in their eye in like 5 minutes, I'm gone - I have no time for suicides, I prefer to spend my time on the living, there's more of them. Heh, Jesus I ain't, I've tried.

You gotta remember, I'm a gnostic, it's no quite the same thing as being a Christian.

Doesn't that make it all that much easier to make 'em call you "my lord" without even thinking you're profaning the Lord's name?
And the last Christian I met (when I wasn't looking in the mirror that is, lol) was a judgemental, conflicted man (using the word man loosely), and those were his nice qualities.   [sm=news.gif]

Amaros -> RE: Racism, Classism, or Justified Preference? (It's a Long Post) (1/13/2007 1:06:31 AM)

Hmmm..., I don't think you can make them call you that, and mean it - either they do or they don't. Personally, I don't need it, I work for a living, as they say in the nav - and it's a question of some concern to me as to how a submissive should address me -  I mean, cerempny is such a big parrt of the whole thing, and I hate to fuck that up, but I don't believe in a redeemer - you have to redeem yourself, nobody is coming down on a chariot of gold to save your sorry ass, you're on your own - heal yo muthafukin' self.

So, it bcomes a bit of a conundrum, if you can dig.

What the hells was the OP about anyways?

Tough exterior to hide the savior within...  I got you.
