A 28-year-old woman died of water intoxication after taking part in a radio station's water drinking contest to win a Nintendo
"consistent with a water intoxication death."

Proving yet again two things... 'People WILL do anything for Wii' (I have a parttime job at a gamestore, nuff said) and 'There's such a thing as too much of a good thing'

Or somthing like it... the first Wii related death, kinda

Wow! The folks at www.dhmo.org would not be surprised however.

That's a good, healthy habit, as long as all 90 aren't at once...

The body has cues to let you know when you've had enough.  This woman must have ignored them in favor of the Nintendo.  Bad choice.

I love the final paragraph:

quote:

John Geary, vice president and marketing manager for Entercom Sacramento, the station's owner, said station personnel were stunned when they heard of Strange's death.

"We are awaiting information that will help explain how this tragic event occurred," he said.

Can you say "Cover your ass"?  The "tragic event occurred" because she killed herself by drinking too much water in your radio station's stupid promotion.

People have been dying of water intoxication since time began.  It is nothing new.
No idea of the stats but I'm sure at least a few people die each year of water...drinking too much.
The amount of water we all drink in a day isn't going to hurt us at all but help us.
Most of us could drink, much more without any ill effects.
In past deaths I seem to recall those who die have been drinking gallons upon gallons per day prior.  For quite a while.
I've been drinking 160 ounces a day for years at the gym.  Then more when I get home...before and after.  I still need more water.

Water intoxication (also known as hyperhydration or water poisoning) is a potentially fatal disturbance in brain function that results when the normal balance of electrolytes in the body is pushed outside of safe limits by a very rapid intake of water.

I am curious on what research was done before deciding on this ridiculous contest.

None of course, nor did whoever chose the contest ever watch the news.

I guess the saying 'look before you jump' doesn't apply anymore.

Not really.

You don't chug it all at once.

Properly functioning kidneys can process roughly between 1 and 1.5 liters of fluid in an hour.  If your water intake exceeds that rate, you will upset the sodium and magnesium levels in your system.  Too little sodium can cause cellular osmisis to stop functioning properly, allowing water to enter cells but not allowing it to leave.  When this occurs to cells in the central nervous system and brain it can lead to seizures, coma and death.  Too little magnesium can lead to stroke or cardiac damage.

http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/water101/    [my group]

70% of Americans are walking around dehydrated. a coke or pepsi is not meant to be an all day beverage. but rather an occassional treat.

water is essential to flush toxins and poisens from your body.  the food and drug industry LOVES that we are conditioned to not chug water!!!!  from craving and overeating- to an ailment that requires an RX, the industry makes money off of our ignorance.

all the fad diets and supplements- clean drinking water tops them all- in terms of restoring the body.

70 years ago- the general population knew to drink water.  today "drink" come from a soda machine. this leaves a toxic stew simmering in your body- day after day atfer day. contaminating your body- its organs and functions.

the dumb american fell for it. and other cultures now copying us consumeristic ways.

you the reader have 5-40 lbs of crud in your colon. feces.  so a colon cleanse is in order.

im doing a colon cleanse right now.

I am also reading the story, incredible.  I am not sure how I feel about this.
Part of me is saying, she should have used common sense.
The other part is saying, she wanted to win the contest.
I think the station is liable for having a contest, that was dangerous.
Water intoxication is real and obviously can be fatal.

More people die from so-called 'colon cleansing', it just doesn't make the news.

What now, warning labels on water?
It is bad enough that water expires, due to the chemicals they treat it with.

since this is a serious thread, i shall refrain from making any humorous comments as they would tend to be taken out of context

That is why I just said 'warning labels' I figured a mock one would not be fitting.
