LadyEllen -> strange things that explode! (1/15/2007 10:08:53 AM)

If this werent so scary, it would be funny; six guys are on trial in London accused of conspiring to explode bombs in London (the bombs didnt go off, thank goodness). Off track, but also funny - one of them evaded detection by fleeing in a burkha!

They made the bombs from chapati flour (a chapati is a form of Indian bread) and hair colouring. Apparently, this combination is highly explosive.

IMPORTANT; Without giving instructions of how to do it -

what unusual things have you come across that can be made to explode? (no penis jokes, please)

Got another! (though it also involves flour....)

Apparently, naked flames are banned in flour mills, because there can be a high concentration of flour dust in the air.

Windmills apparently used to explode in the old days, because of this!

Oh, yes! Microwave ovens are incredible!

We have a show called Brainiac;Science Abuse over here, and every week they put something or other in a microwave - and it goes bang! Big style! The oven door flys off, the box lifts in the air and comes down mangled. Very entertaining - and often very innocuous things they put in there too!

any fine powder in the air, near an open flame, can explode.  Grain elevators do it with some surprising regularity.

Nitrogen fertilizer is very explosive, given the right detonator and/or catalyst.  It was the major component of the Oklahoma City bomb.  And every couple of years some poor dumb bastard's pickup goes up because he was carrying a few hundred pounds of the stuff.

OeldeWolf -> RE: strange things that explode! (1/15/2007 9:25:27 PM)

The comment about almost any powdered flammable substance is a good one, as it is the fine particle size and thorough mixing with the air that creates the potential for a boom.

But some surprising substances can go boom.  Several light metals can go boom if they are of small enough particle size, and the conditions are right.
