Stranger things have happened.

Monkeyboy did one term as governor of Texas before being elected Simian In Chief.

Obama may not have a lot of experience, but he had enough to know we shouldn't have gone into Iraq.  It was all the blowhards with experience that got us into Iraq.

So my entire vote should be based on that one single issue?

This is why the leadership in this country is so poor. People vote only on one issue. Either it is the war, terrorism, abortion, stem-cells, etc... When you vote for a president, that person will have a HELL of a lot more influence on this country than a war half-way around the world. To vote simply on that one issue proves voters truely can't pick a president any better than a blind man can choose colors (George Washington made that quote way back in 1800).

"The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter."
-Winston Churchill

Now I didn't agree with the war either, but there really isn't anything that can be done about it now. We invaded, we created the mess, now we have the moral and ethical responsibility to clean it up. Otherwise our international image will become even more damaged if we leave and civil war breaks out that leads to a million more deaths.
So why vote on that one issue anymore? We don't have any other option but to win the war.

When people make this comment, I generally ask them "How exactly do you define 'winning the war.'"  What then follows is they generally get this weird deer in the headlights stare and start mumbling nonsense and oftentimes jingoistic phrases, occaisionally interchanged with aspersions on my own sense of patriotism and duty.

However, this thread is about who would be a good president.  I still want to see the Nader/Biafra ticket.

No more exploding Pintos or uncontrollable Corvairs accompanied by "Mellow out or you will pay."

Would someone explain to me what Obama has done that warrents as much attention as he is getting?

He gave a speech, a very good one, and he did it on national TV.  He touched a very common nerve, and is still working that theme.

I don't think he is electable though, and I reject the notion that those who wouldn't vote for him because of his race, wouldn't vote for him anyway.

It's a long time before I make up my mind.

Well.... the last thing we need is another melee mouth, bow tie wearing, cheese-eatn', telling-everyone-what-they-wanna-hear, fake MF in the Whitehouse.

You want a black man for president.....let's get a real brother.... one that has some balls and completely speaks his mind, and is not afraid of the establishment.

I'd nominate Charles Barkley or Steven A.{quite frankly}Smith before an ‘’Urkel’’ like Obama.

Got this in an email today, have no idea if it is true:

Barack Hussein Obama was born in Honolulu, Hawaii, to black Muslim Barack Hussein Obama Sr. of Nyangoma-Kogelo, Siaya District, Kenya, and White atheist, Ann Dunham of Wichita, Kansas.

When Obama was two years old, his parents divorced and his father returned to Kenya. His mother married Lolo Soetoro, a Muslim as well, moving to Jakarta with young Obama, when he was six years old.

Within six months he had learned to speak the Indonesian language Obama spent "two years in a Muslim school, then two more in a Catholic school" in Jakarta.

Obama takes great care to conceal the fact that he is a Muslim.  Mitigating that information, by saying that for two years, he attended a Catholic school.

Obama's father, Barack Hussein Obama, Sr. was a radical Muslim who migrated from Kenya to Jakarta, Indonesia. He met Obama's mother, Ann Dunham—at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Obama's spin- meisters are now attempting to make it appear that Obama's introduction to Islam, came from his father and that influence was only temporary, which is true. Obama Sr. returned to Kenya immediately following the divorce and never again had any direct influence over his son's education.   But,
Lolo Soetoro, Ann Dunham's second husband, educated his stepson Barack Hussein Obama, as a good Muslim by enrolling him in one of Jakarta's Wahabbi schools.

Wahabbism is the radical teaching that created the Muslim terrorists, who are now waging Jihad on the industrialized world. Since it is politically expedient to be a Christian when you are seeking political office in the United States, Obama joined the United Church of Christ, to help purge any notion that he is still a Muslim.

The thing most commentators have had issue with is a lack of Executive office experience even a single term as a governor teaches some serious lessons about how the sausage is made. A couple terms as a VP might get him over the hump.

What has people talking is the fact that he's a very very skilled orator people got to hear him during the last Democratic Party Convention, ( I know I heard him and while I disagreed with alot of his stances, I noted him as a potential candidate then)
Beyond that he has not much to recomend him for the job that I have seen. He'll have to make some real policy statements before he can be taken seriously and then we'll see where he stands on Federal issues.
He will make for a very interesting primary season though.

proudsub,
It took me under 20 seconds to establish that your post was demonstrably false on every point.  You could've done the same, but you didn't.
Posting that manufactured hate in its entirety, and adding a lame line about not knowing if it's true is not exactly honourable, let alone a contribution to your country's future.
Seriously, you should be ashamed of yourself.

I suspect he will make a lot of speaches, collect a lot of contributuons, get a lot of exposure, then decide "The time is not right." I expect the ticket to be Senator Clinton & Gov. Richardson of New Mexico, experienced & will deliver the Hispanic vote.

Mercnbeth -> RE: Obama for President? (1/17/2007 9:27:49 AM)

Mr. Obama is not experienced in the "back-room" Washington DC deals. He is not connected with any major industry or special interest group. Some see his lack of experience and connections as a deficiency. I see them as an asset. He is a self made man, getting to Harvard based upon his own intelligence and ability; not as a legacy. He angers and worries the re-tread standard bearer of both political parties. Voting for Mr. Obama would meet my personal criteria for voting against any party and/or individual currently responsible for the condition of the US. His views thus far, although philosophically a little left of mine, are pragmatic logical positions based upon his personal beliefs and worthy of respect. His background, growing up in a Muslim household, educated in Islam, admitted use of "illegal" drugs; strengthens his candidacy in my eyes. I am in the process of reading the book he wrote and his legacy is far removed from the Kennedy, Bush, and Clinton. These are the reasons I would support and vote for him - today.

Over the weekend I saw him on one of the political talking heads programs. He confirmed my views regarding his intelligence. However, when asked directly if he would vote against the funding of additional troops in Iraq he refused to give a direct answer. It was one of the few questions that he answered as a "politician" and not a man who didn't have a problem speaking for his position, and giving viable reasons for it. Mr. Obama and Ms. Clinton identified front-runners; as similar in that regard. Unlike Senator Kennedy with nothing to loose and who will be elected as Senator 20 years after he dies, Mr. Obama and Ms Clinton seem to share the tightrope of not wanting to appear "dove-ish" to centrists or middle America while not pissing off their liberal base. This is the only reason I have to not vote for him - Today.

Edited to add:
Mr. Obama's lack of connections, and the fear he puts into both political parties is a reason why I hope he has good security during his campaign. He can be much more dangerous than either Kennedy to the "establishment".

'RealOne' - Can there be a pre-occurrence "conspiracy" investigation?

I never said i agreed or believed it, just passed it on. You are right, i should of checked it out before posting, but was short on time last night. Most everyone will probably receive the email anyway, because it is being distributed quickly. I am not planning to forward it to anyone and i apologize for posting it here.[:o]

Thing is wecan expect more politician and less statesman frmhim now that he has declared, he will not be able to keep under the radar on policy. He will soon have to put forth his"adgenda for the nation".

I'd say they are as familiar with the free speech provisions as, oh let's say, somebody who puts together a website comparing the President of the United States' facial expressions with those of a chimpanzee, or any of the "Bush is a crackhead" crap that has showed up in my inbox these past few years.

If you are referring to the freedom of religion aspects, they don't apply.

If this e-mail starts going wide, Obama might want to strongly consider a photo-op eating some BBQ pork.

WyrdRich -> RE: Obama for President? (1/17/2007 1:36:08 PM)

I don't think you owe an apology for posting this Proudsub.  This is the standard that has been established.  Best if we see it for what it is.  I don't know if it was created by some whacko's of the right or Hillary's black-ops team (no pun intended).

I hope you don't catch too much flak for daring to be the OP.  I thank you for it.

He is not free to practice his own religion without people casting aspersions on him or doubting his ability

Nope.  If you'd stopped with "He is not free to practice his own religion" you'd be correct.  People can feel however they like about it.  Say he was a Satanist, (another much maligned and widely misunderstood religion).  Is that going to be a campaign issue?  Freedom of Religion means nobody has to treat the Muslims like they are special.

Basic civics here, the Bill of Rights is about what the People don't allow the Gov't to do, not the other way around.

Just for the record, I think the e-mail is vile, ignorant and bigoted.  I'll be on the look-out for a good debunking to send back to anyone who fwds it to me.
