History of malt liqour

http://home.earthlink.net/~ggghostie/maltliquor.html

look towards the bottom however:

"In order to solve the "malt liquor problem," the Center for Science in the Public Interest has called for legislation that will restrict the alcoholic content of all malt beverages to 5% by volume. Should such legislation ever pass, beer styles such as barleywines, winter warmers, strong lagers, old ales, bock beers, imperial stouts and India Pale Ales would be banned and unavailable. This would affect every brewpub, every microbrewery, most importers, and millions of beer drinkers in the United States who would no longer be able to find the beers they enjoy. The legislation would create a windfall for the major brewers and take us back in time to 1972, when all that was available to beer drinkers was light American lager and a few light imports. And that is why you, as a beer drinker, should be paying attention to the debate over malt liquor."

No...
NO....
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!

I shudder at the thought of you poor Americans with the beers you have available to you as things are. The notion of restricting availability still further should be grounds for rebellion. I mean, you got excited enough about a bit of tea, and this is beer we're talking.

The key to this is in the "windfall for the major brewers". Although whether the likes of Budweiser is brewed rather than drawn from the urine traps at pig farms is debatable, I guess they are still registered as brewers.

lady ellen, you are about 20 years in the past on that.  America is full of great beer.  So many great ones, Deschutes(out of Oregon) Black Butte Porter is like nectar from the Gods.  Several of our local (Alaska) Brewers have won plenty of awards in Europe.

Rum, Before i state an opinion on this discussion im curious why it would be such a big deal for you not to be able to purchase malt liquor over 5%?

mnottertail -> RE: Piss Water mandatory? (2/1/2007 5:37:43 AM)

Because it tastes great and it is more filling...  (a play on an american commercial)

Well if American people believe that they are a little gullible. The more ABV in a beverage the more you taste the alcohol, the less you take the drink. Its a little like having a curry, the hotter it is the less you taste the food. On the point of it being more filling well i would suggest food to fill you rather than alcohol.

OffTheBeatenTrak -> RE: Piss Water mandatory? (2/1/2007 5:53:21 AM)

Well look on the bright side you get to drink twice as much before being cometose,

Viable alternatives.

Turps,
De-icer,
Lighter fluid,
Meths,
Paint Striper,

On a serious note banning high abv% liquors will only encourage drinkers onto spirits or other higher ABV% drinks.

saphira2 -> RE: Piss Water mandatory? (2/1/2007 6:32:48 AM)

stuff it dont let them put you down and as track offers just get urself some white spirits that usually does the trick xxxxxx

LadyEllen -> RE: Piss Water mandatory? (2/1/2007 6:32:57 AM)

Oh MissT! I thought you of all people would know the difference between beers?

I dont drink much of it this days (cant take the volume or the alcohol!) but occasionally a real ale at 6% is wonderful!

You can brew a decent beer at 3.5% (Banks's is very good and a real ale), but the stronger ones dont lose flavour by way of alcohol, it adds to the mix and makes it worth a quaff or two.

Mind you, the 10% type beers we have here are awful. Theyre brewed to cater for the alcoholics market, and they taste of nothing in particular but get you pissed (drunk) very quickly.

Quite possibly.

I beg to differ here. Most serious beer drinkers i know would disagree with you on this.

Hmm as far as im aware the strongest beer we sell over here is 8%.

10% BEER oh lord please show me the way

LadyEllen -> RE: Piss Water mandatory? (2/1/2007 8:25:34 AM)

I shall have to go to the offy and find out, but I'm sure the strongest is 12% over here - you know the Kestrel Superstrength, Carlsberg Super etc.

Ideal for getting drunk really quickly. Same as drinking in one can, 2-3 cans of beer.

I believe there's a campaign to ban these type here too though, as they are brewed for and marketed to alcoholics, for whom they are a drink of choice. (when theyre not drinking the vilest and cheapest cider that is).

missturbation -> RE: Piss Water mandatory? (2/1/2007 8:42:53 AM)

Ah well i wasn't referring to cans to be honest. Although i dont think i have seen the ones you are referring to. I was refering to draught beers sold in your average public house.

Edited to add -
Kestrel super 9% abv
Carlsberg special brew 9%

There is no listing on the carlsberg website for a carlsberg super strength, the strongest carlsberg is the special brew.

LadyEllen -> RE: Piss Water mandatory? (2/1/2007 9:36:19 AM)

Thanks MissT - saves me a trip LOL! Tes, its Carlsberg Special Brew, not super as I thought. But then, I wouldnt buy it anyway!

But there is one that is 12% I'm sure; tastes like treacle and is totally disgusting. We used to swig a can of that before going out in the good ole days when I could drink - saved a fortune at the pub, 'cause we were pissed before we got there LOL!

I know we look different ways on many many many things and we constantly get on each other's asses whenever we cross paths....but jesus christ, I woulda thought beer was the one thing we could have been civil about.

Simple answer, most 5% beer quite simply, sucks. It isent about alcaholic content, its about taste.

I was being civil hun. Trying to find out why you object before i jump in and say what i think helps avoid us biting each others asses.

Ok, well the higher the alcohol the less the beer tastes of beer and the more it begins to taste of alcohol, more paint stripper like. If you enjoy the taste of that then well good on ya but to me its rather like the curry comparison i made, the hotter it is the less you get the best taste.

Rumtiger -> RE: Piss Water mandatory? (2/1/2007 12:59:03 PM)

American Lager dosent taste much like beer to me either.

missturbation -> RE: Piss Water mandatory? (2/1/2007 1:07:22 PM)

Ah we are speaking of lager!!
Being in the licenced trade we refer to beer as bitters, milds etc.
Lager is a class of its own to me.
What lagers do you have over there?
