"Pain! huh... good god. What it is goo-ood for absolutely everything!
Say it again?"

The question I am asking will develope as I type...

What is pain?

I know what can be painful. I know what can be created and released with pain. I know that what is painful today can be tollerated tomorrow. I know know it can be transitory. I know different folks have different relationships with pain. I know it can be acknowledged or ignored. I know it has to have a conveyer, a medium, and a receptor. I know nerve cells have "doors" that open and close....

I think I'm wondering how you differentiate pain from other stimuli. Is it merely by level of intensity? Is it quantified by intent or lack there of?

After you peel all of these levels of familiarity away...

How do you, describe pain itself?

Stimulus which I interpret as something I very much dislike.

In my opinion the point of feeling pain is being able to tolerate it, then enjoy it.  If you can forget for a moment that you've been trained for years by your parents or whatnot to stay away from pain, you can begin to really feel it.  Of course you'll need more.  For me it can be calming and exciting at the same time.  Pain is a way to concentrate and focus.  At times it can be a distraction.  Obviously it can be different things to different people.

As for differentiating it from other stimuli, I think that's easy... pain requires a lot more willpower (and maybe respect) to be able to tolerate.  Especially psychological pain.  If you're not careful you can channel it in the wrong direction.  It can have a profound affect over time, positive and negative.

Funny thing ... before I discovered masochism I was very ticklish... not so much anymore...

not sure i can answer what you are looking for. but.. pain is not something i like.. but i LOVE submitting to it.  for me it is the submitting that turns me on.

Ask  me to eat Ice Cream for your pleasure….. oh me, oh my, please Farmer Brown don't throw me into the briar patch..

Ask me to take pain from your pleasure.. that is, for me, that takes a lot of submission from me.  And that willingness gets me off.

"What is pain?"  Very good question.  In the classic, vanilla sense it is a stimuli invoking the fight or flight response of the brain.  It is supposed to prevent us from further harm.  BUT, in our forum, pain is that which evokes either a response of pleasure or distraction.  How pain is administered and received is the main question here.  In our lifestyle, pain can be anything from spankings (which may or may not bring us pleasure), beatings (floggings, singletails, faceslapping to mention a few), knife/needle play (for those seeking the more edgy play), to any measure of emotional responses (humilation is a good example).  To quote Patrick Swazye in the movie "Roadhouse", "...pain don't hurt..."  This is basically true.  Pain is the brains response learned from years of experiences trying to avoid that which is harmful to us.  Soooo, for those of use who enjoy inflicting pain and those who enjoy receiving pain it is a measure of our wills to twist and turn something we have been taught to aviod into something we seek, for some of us something we crave almost like a drug.  Remember, endorphins those wonderful chemicals released while we play with pain are very closely related to........drum roll please......MORPHINE!  That's right, as we inflict or receive pain we are producing our own doses of morphine which creates that euphoric high we so lovingly call Dom/sub space.  As with any drug the more you use it the more you want it, crave it, NEED IT!  So, it might be said that "pain" has, for many of us, become our drug of choice.  Do we see pain as something good or bad, that is up to those participating in the scene.  As for me, as my name implies, I very much enjoy inflicting pain by whatever means possible as long as those receiving it are willing participants.

i have never experienced endorphins from the sensation of pain.  For me, pain hurts and i dislike it.  But like others have said, it is my willingness and my need to submit that excites me.  i am somewhat jealous of the masochist who can surrender to the whip and the clamp because of the physical pleasure they get.  For me, the pleasure i get comes much later when He whispers breathlessly "good girl"

For some there is a fine line which blurs between the sensations of pain and pleasure. As the endorphins are released they can drive the feelings of pleasure higher and higher driving a slave straight into sub space. It all just depends on the make up of the slave and how they serve their Master. Where some crave the caress of their Masters hand upon their cheek others crave the feel of His hands as it brings a single-tail or flogger againt them. For me, let the endorphins flow.

Same here, D.
i love submitting to pain, opening up to it, and not fighting it.  It can feel like i'm floating at times.  Intense unexpected pain (such as when i broke my tailbone a few weeks ago) is much different than controlled pain to me though.  Pinching, biting, scratching, slapping, spanking, flogging, etc can bring me to a euphoric state if i accept it.
