FelinePersuasion -> better alternatives to noise blocking than earplugs. (2/2/2007 3:28:39 AM)

Daddy snores horribly, we can't address that issue right now other than earplugs, but they hurt my ears, I can feel them, when I lay dow or at least they keep me from deep sleep staten they press into the ear and keep me awake. I need better solution than plugs, and head phone type things would bother me all night too just like the plugs do.

edited to ass this is not a poll i clicked it on accident and am to irritable from the chinese food being a ledball in my gut to change it.

He could sleep in another room

FelinePersuasion -> RE: better alternatives to noise blocking than earplugs. (2/2/2007 3:39:24 AM)

swtn there isn't another room just the livingroom an our couch is to small to sleep on. And my dad's up at like 4 banging around an wizzing up coffe so when I sleep on the couch it wakes me up. I suppose I could put an airmatress on the floor way in the back if I cleared my crafts away. that's pretty lonley though. When he gets medical he's gonna get a sleep test an stuff.

Change your diet.

As to snoring. Does he snore in every sleeping position? If he only snores when lying on his back, it may be remedied when he accustomes himself to sleep on his side.

It may be indicative of an increased risk of heart problems.

It may be weight related and stop when he gradually loses some weight.

I have forgotten a lot what I knew about snoring.

Much is known, that I do know. I also recall having read something about surgery - there are various kinds of those.

Anyway, I believe that a physician may have some advice.

Myself, I usually do sleep with ear phones / mufflers - because of traffic noise and sometimes neighbour noise. Mufflers do not help much against neighbours, unfortunately, they just lessen the shock of waking up. If only all steel would rust overnight... But I guess that someone would then invent a plastic car.

Edited to add: this is my thousandth post!

SEE a Dr. If he has sinus problems there's all kind of PROVEN methods that are effective and PROVEN to work.

eyesopened -> RE: better alternatives to noise blocking than earplugs. (2/2/2007 3:47:25 AM)

The foam type ear plugs could be cut down to not protrude past your ear cartilage (sp) and that could help.  There's little one can do to block the noise.  You could try to get the snoring down a little, go to sleep before your Daddy, but none of those alternatives sound appealling to me.

i have not lived with a man in 18 years.  Over the past 18 years, on those rare occassions i have had the honor of sleeping with a man, i have treasured each snore as soothing as the sound of rain on a tin roof.

tml James don't have medical coverage, dr stuff isn't possble, yeah you could be billed for it but it'd prolly be thoughsands of dollars. In 2 months he should have coverage, then it's to the dr!

Rule he snores in all postions.   well we sleep on our sides, left and right. weight loss is in the plans for both of us. I personally think it's narrow nasals cause he's a loud stuffy type breather even when awake.

I have noticed that I snore infrequently when I feel heavy / have gained weight. Snoring in any case often is weight related.

Try a bathing cap. They are elastic and will cover your ears airtight. You may also put some cotton wool pads on your ears before you don the bathing cap.

An mp3 player or ipod with  gentle music.

enigmaslave -> RE: better alternatives to noise blocking than earplugs. (2/2/2007 4:44:42 AM)

- Try going to bed first, so that you can get into the R.E.M. sleep first, it harder to wake people in this state.
- Try meditation. (techniques can be found on the net)
- Try (quietly) chanting

And when he does have insurance, make sure he has a sleep study done. Heavy snoring is a sign of Sleep Apnia.

windchymes -> RE: better alternatives to noise blocking than earplugs. (2/2/2007 5:35:25 AM)

What kind of earplugs are using?  I use those soft spongey ones that you pinch, put into your ear canal, and they slowly expand and really block noise well. I don't even notice that they're there, maybe you could try those?

Also, I've found that running a loud fan can be great for muffling noise.

i was going to say cotton too, although i personally don't know how effective it is.

wind those are the ones I use, and they bother me to no end. I sleep on my side and that pushes them way down in on something that is annoyed by them pressing on them, and just the general feel of them in my ears annoy me. maybe if I tried diffrent styles of the soft foam ones.

Get him to learn to play the Dijiridoo.  Playing it teaches you to breath better, and has been demonstrated to improve snoring.  YOu have to really open your nasal passages to circular breath.  Plus its fun, and can be used as a form of meditation as was sugested earlier.

sleazy -> RE: better alternatives to noise blocking than earplugs. (2/2/2007 8:37:49 PM)

Get him to try wearing nose strips to help keep the nostrils open, that helps some folks.

The CPAP machine will put a positive air pressure on his esophagus and eliminate any snoring he might otherwise do.

Assuming he enjoys having air blown in his face all night.

My husband has a tendency to snore, and rather loudly. I have found that he snores worse on his back. So I bounce on the bed til he flips onto his side. It quites him some.

As far as earplugs... I have tried them. They work for a few, but I usually am to paranoid that I won't hear the alarm that I end up sleeping with one in.

I don't blame you for not wanting to sleep on the couch. It is lonely! Though on occassion I lay on the couch til I am very drowsy and then go fall down in bed.

There are earplugs that are basically a formable hard wax.  They work a lot better than the disposable foam, and can be reused.
