Strangely in my experience the spiritual people are far more open minded than the lifestyle people.  I can talk about BDSM with a spiritual persona nd even if they are not into it, they are open about it, but within the lifestyle most seem close minded, which is really odd considering they expect everyone else to be open minded about their fetishes, guess it says something about the majority of people and human nature.

Magick is a tool which can be used by any religion. Many Witches do not use magick.

Just a small disagreement, I would say that many WICCANS do not use magic (it being a spirituality first and foremost), but it's kinda the defining factor of calling yourself a 'witch'; that'd be a user of magic.

Agree on the rest though.

In Ireland, and the UK, it is more usual to see Wicca in its traditional forms, pretty much unchanged since Gardner's days.  It's certainly what I was introduced to, though in the last few years things have been following the States more with 'ecelectic' tendencies.

In Trad Wicca, there is ritual nudity (though consensual in that you can leave at any time, it's forced in the sense that all involved are going all the way: there's no spectators), bondage, flaggelation (called 'scourging', using a type of cat/flogger implement with knots in the tails), and sex.  Not too bad for something cobbled together in the 40's and 50's in England.  Thank the Gods for Crowley's influence  ;)

There is also the ultimate power and responsibility of the High Priestess over the entire group, and her embodiment of the Goddess on a regular basis.

Given all this at the age of 18, I guess it's hardly surprising that i eventually found My way to BDSM?!

SATANMAN -> RE: Ritual, Magic, Pagan Spirituality (2/15/2007 2:29:54 PM)

I'm not following your comment, Satanman. Probably just me. Can you explain what you mean a little more? Thank.

FukinTroll -> RE: Ritual, Magic, Pagan Spirituality (2/15/2007 5:26:47 PM)

I'm rather curious myself. Are you a practicing Satanist, as in ethic of Satanism, or a satanic devil worshiper?

Inquiring minds want to know.

MsStick -> RE: Ritual, Magic, Pagan Spirituality (2/16/2007 4:01:47 AM)

I have met Satanists who would be more correctly Set-ians (the Egyptian God Set), who are involved with BDSM.  Strangely enough, I met the Setians before the BDSMers!

Also, those who come to Satanism through the teachings of Anton LaVey are often involved in BDSM.

Those who refer to their perverted Christianity as Satanism I have no dealings with, nor do I wish to.

Trampler -> RE: Ritual, Magic, Pagan Spirituality (6/21/2007 9:00:30 AM)

I wish the powers that be that govern this website would open a spirituality forum, I think there is enough discussion about it to warrent it.

Trampler -> RE: Ritual, Magic, Pagan Spirituality (6/21/2007 9:03:06 AM)

I have found that more lifestylers that i meet are more openminded to paganism, then pagans to the lifestyle, even the kinksters.  There dosn't seem to be alot of crossover here. Though a lady I have been chatting with near Ann Arbor says there is ALOT of crossover there.  lol.

vield -> RE: Ritual, Magic, Pagan Spirituality (6/21/2007 9:16:08 AM)

There is a good bit of crossover in the US between Pagan, Wiccan and BD/SM sprituality, but there are also a LOT of folks in any of these communities who are uncomfortable about new things and people with different preferences.
I know people of Wiccan groups who are afraid of being "outed" as kinky to their religious group, much like a Gay christian may fear being outed to their church group, or a BD/SM Lesbian couple may fear being outed to their Women's groups. I find this sad.

Fortunately I feel that all the internet access to ANYTHING these days is helping to remove a few of these barriers.

I have not found pagans in this area who are into the English sort of rituals described above as pagan worship, but I have met some who get into this as BD/SM and find sprituality there.

beargonewild -> RE: Ritual, Magic, Pagan Spirituality (6/21/2007 10:52:36 AM)

It seems for myself, my path into Paganism started long before my path into BDSM. When reaching a point where I knew that this is right, I converted to being a Pagan/Wiccan and then began my journey into BDSM. Lately I find that the two are over lapping yet also stays apart. Usually when I come across an internal issue pertaining to BDSM, I turn to my spiritual beliefs to help overcome this. Especially when I face issues of trust with a Master or Dom. I find one is very compatable with the other.

Trampler -> RE: Ritual, Magic, Pagan Spirituality (6/21/2007 10:58:13 AM)

Yeah same here. I had been a practicing pagan for 15 years, and thought about becoming involved in bdsm for almost as long, but was 2 afraid til Sept of '06.

Okay... I was right with you in regards to BDSM and spirituality.  I even was okay with your previous statement saying that MOST Wiccans do not do magic.  But... now I have to say 'Stop'.

First, Let me give you a brief history of me and why I say this.   I have been involved in Wiccan (and for a time Satanism) for longer than you have been alive.  I am a Wiccan High Priestess and clery for the Correllian Nativist Church International.  I come from 'liniage', which means that I am what some call a hereditary witch (my Grandmother, Great Grandmother, Great Great Grandmother... etc.  (do you see where this is going?)).   My family comes from Southern France.  My Grandmother was the 1st one born in the US., so I dont fit in with the 'eceletic tendancies' that you attribute to the US.

In true Traditional Wicca (NOT something created by Gardner, though I can understand the draw to Gardnerian) being 'skyclad' (ritual nudity) is not the norm.  It happens in some groups, but is NOT mandatory for worship of the Gods.  Some type of garb is usually present, ranging from elaborate robes to sorons.  Usually, the members in the cirlce are dressed alike with the Priest and Priestess being 'different' by an addition to said garb.  (We wear our circlets to show our position)  (But agian, this is dependant on the coven in which you are in)  And Sex?  In most of the Trads that I have studied, sex magic or the great rite is usually performed by just the Priest and Priestess, most of the time in closed quarters.  Children are not allowed in these rituals and they are usually extremely private.

Anyway... getting off my soap box now.  I am prepared for the slams from those out there that dont agree with me.  But I am just giving my prespective from the research, studing and from information handed down through my family.  I just didnt want those out there seeking the Goddess to think that nudity, sex and such is the norm and all that there is.

Okay, yet another tub of worms I would love to debate... But I am Only going debate the above statement.

I have known both (my brother was a Satanic High Priest of the Church of Satan in Cali) Satanists and Setians, (my best friend in Texas was a follower of Set) and if you ask them... They are TOTALLY different things.  True Satanists worhip themselves as Gods, Setians worship the God Set and usually follow an extreme Egyption path in most things.

Quivver -> RE: Ritual, Magic, Pagan Spirituality (6/21/2007 3:13:06 PM)

I cant call myself Wiccan, Christian or a Satanist but I do believe in the Magic of a soul.
I believe they all Journey wheather the shell they live in are aware of it or not at the time.
I have been working on tuning into that energy for a long long time after a Grandmothers
teachings.  So if there is any connection for me, mine went here from there.

gwendolyn -> RE: Ritual, Magic, Pagan Spirituality (6/21/2007 4:38:36 PM)

I have to say that I found it easier to find prospective mates in the D/s and M/s communities that were Pagans than the other way around. Though our coven had quite a few practicing BDSM-ers; surprising for the deep south.  I was raised in a pretty traditional Gardenarian coven, but have strayed away from the defined set of rules to find my own path. I've never quite gotten away from that 'Gee, why aren't you using the proper protocol?' feeling when I watch Master work with magic, though. No matter how I try, I've got that routine ingrained in my grey matter.

Being so young when I began my spiritual path, I guess you could say I "discovered" D/s after Paganism. But I'd always been drawn to both. I just didn't have a name for my sexual beliefs until a few years later. When my Reiki master discovered my interest, he introduced me to my mentor, a local Domme/High Priestess. Alternative and occult is just what I do, though. I am, afterall, a Scorpio. -grins-

No slams from me. I have to agree with your obviously educated perspective. Wicca is a relatively new form of neo-paganism, from what I understand. Gardener certainly wasn't the founding father, either. Those who created the tree hugging type religious sect used some of his ideas. Paganism and Witchcraft is hardly all hugs and love. Druids, as an example, weren't the nicest of folks you'd run across, by todays prudish standards. Sacrifice was a normal part of high holidays, as well as some moon rituals.

As for bondage and scourging, those have nothing to do with the modern Wicca. I'm pretty sure you're using information from Buckland's evil big blue book. Buckland was one of Gardener's proteges. Yes, binding an initiate's hands is tradition in the Gardenarian tradition, but it's purely symbolic during a first degree intitiation (something I've experienced firsthand.)

Wicca was born in the Western culture, not in England. And the Crowley comment. I'm not even going to touch that. Nor will I go near his deck. -shudders-

MarkMinette -> RE: Ritual, Magic, Pagan Spirituality (6/21/2007 5:21:25 PM)

Being non-religious, my sub is Wiccan. Never have I felt such a deep love for someone this intense in my life. I always accuse her of putting a "spell" on me, but I know it's just her personality. She's the woman I've always dreamed of. I think Wicca may have a base in her beliefs, but she's all the loving, caring woman that I could ever hope for and more. I support her beliefs, and consider myself fortunate to have found her.

Awe... why not??  (says in best 'sweet little girl voice')  I actually have that deck, it is very powerful.  I do prefer my Hanson Roberts deck though....  either that one or one of my many Dragon decks...
