Two i sometimes use are for fucks sake or bloody hell,i hate swearing or nasty words myself.But when having a particulary bad day sometimes bad words are a great way of destressing yourself.lol

.But what bad words are your particular favourites, when having a very bad day.What word springs to mind for you now then please?

Either that or a philosophical "bollocks".

I have to say my all time favourite is MOTHERFUCKER! Now I just love that one, it can be used soooooo many ways. You can mutter it under your breath, you can shout it at the stupid woman on the freeway putting on her makeup, talking on the phone, drinking coffee and smoking a cigarette. You can say it in awe.....motherfuckerrrrrrr......You can add to it, god damned mother fucker. You can adapt it, god damned motherfucking piece of shit.

So yeah, that would be it.

"Fucking shit" does it for me.

I still remember my adorable 18 mo. old son looking up at me and saying that, after he had spent a couple hours playing with the neighbor kids, lol

For fucks sake must be my fave as my 2 year old has it down to a Tee..... im dreading him starting nursery lol.

I swear too much and too loud, I must try to keep it under control... im going to try a week without swearing.. this should be fun!

but in the moment, i sometimes say your mother. have even said it in the company of my own mother, and she agreed. her mother does bring about unpleasant thoughts...

Are motherfucker and son of a bitch Italian derived? I'm thinking of English equivalents and we don't use a third person in our swear vocabulary.

e.g. You really are a wanker, aren't you. (throw in a spot of patronisation for added effect).

So, serious question: are the above two generated by Italian-Americans? if not, where does involving mothers in a set-to come from?

I'm Sicilian and have grown up hearing son of a bitch in the house.
It was never considered cursing. Never heard fuck or any variation of it at all in the house. That was cursing and unacceptable and disrespectful on all levels in the presence of any female. That was the law as laid down by my father...the only male in a house of five women, six if you counted the cat.
A bit off track. Sorry. Couldn't tell you the origin.

I can't find an origin.
I'm also part Italian. I remember getting in trouble for repeating something my grandmother said... son of a beetchee (heavy italian accent).
I wouldn't restrict mother insults to Italians, though perhaps we use them more often?

I doubt it. I mean, anyone who would hurt their mother in any way shape or form would generally be regarded as the worst son of a bitch who ever lived. Thats where Im guessing that Motherfucker come from. As we know, fuck doesnt always mean to fuck someone in the physical sense, it can be used to describe having been done wrong. ie "that car salesman really fucked me". So anyone who would "fuck" their mother would be the worst kind of person who ever lived. Also...Son of a bitch---Which is basically calling your mother a bitch....again, its about the worst thing you can do is call someone's mother a nasty name.

Im not sure why you would associate these "motherly" type profanities with Italians. Though italians do often hold their mothers on a saint-like pedestal, I think it's more universal than anything.

I'm a full blooded Sicilian and often we swear in the italian language, except when we're really pissed off at someone, in which case we usually say something like---"You Son of Mnottertail".

The link to Italians: the latin countries are more dramatic and they have been known to involve animals and mothers in personal insults (I have French friends who have shed some light on this) e.g. son of a bitch. It's very un-English to involve mothers in insults - it's an unwritten rule to keep them out of it. Swear words derive from the middle ages so the American versions will be derived from the immigrant countries. Don't laugh, but I tend to use fuzzbunnies (if I've dropped something or otherwise had a non painful accident), and kumquats if I've hurt myself (or 'you kumquat' to people who can't/shouldn't drive). Freaky murow if I'm annoyed.
