Wulfchyld -> Lower the voting age to 10 (2/6/2007 9:45:29 AM)

If they are going to charge young children as adults they should make them adults. Lower the voting, drinking, smoking, blah blah blah to age 10.

It is pretty clear that politicians have no interest in rehabilitation when they can charge a child as an adult and send them to adult prison. I think this is getting just ridiculous.

Now I suspect that if they lowered the voting age to 10, we would see a radical shift in politics. Perhaps even Malcolm, from Malcolm in the middle would be a presidential candidate.
I know this seems like a ridiculous concept, however it goes along the same lines of sending 16 and 17 year olds to war with the draft. They can fight and die, but can not vote, drink, smoke or get married.

toservez -> RE: Lower the voting age to 10 (2/6/2007 9:59:49 AM)

There have been conflicts of logic with age limits for along time. I do not see what has changed.

You can die for your country at age eighteen, but hell no you cannot handle an alcoholic beverage until you are twenty-one.

The debate when to punish a person as an adult is one that transcends logic or emotions. Some people are born flawed and some get screwed up from crappy situations, some are good people who did a stupid and irrational thing they would never do again and anywhere in between. Personally I do not see how you can make one blanket law how a young person can get treated but I also would not have to be the one to decide which is which.

I am all for anyone voting that will take the time to have an informed decision. It depress me how many people vote based only on attack adds, minor issues and water cooler talk from other ill informed people. A ten year old almost has much of a chance as anyone else. Sure they can probably be manipulated but from what I see every day is that different then most adults?

I think Big Bird would probably make it into the Whitehouse..  But he (she?  it?) being the commie loving, liberal, politically correct dinner for 10 that he/she/it is would probably still support the war in Iraq.  He/she/it would probably just spend more domestically.  On garbage cans.  And cookies.  And the letter B.

I agree Loki, I am totally against treating kids as adults in the criminal system. Their brains have not developed enough to be held to an adult standard of right or wrong. It has saddened me when I see kids who are neurologically undeveloped held to the standard of someone who is. Not to mention that mentally retarded people get executed in this country.. it is revolting.

Wulfchyld -> RE: Lower the voting age to 10 (2/6/2007 10:07:57 AM)

Whoa! Don't even get me started on friggen executions! When you have to forcefully medicate someone so the will be "legally Sane" for execution, you need shot.

Oh yes, there are some major problems with our justice system... tip of the iceberg

If you had your choice what would the age be that you'd legally be an adult?  At what point do we earn the priviledge to answer to what we do wrong on our own?

In some states you can get your drivers license at 14, 13 in some arenas.  You can drink at 19, 21 in other areas.  I know I was in an area where I was 19 it was legal.
Should we make it the age that you get your license?
Draft, I was not aware they ever drafted anyone before they were 18.  I have a cousin who just joined the National Guard, he is 17.  He had to have his fathers permission and he cannot go anywhere until he turns 18.
There are some states out there where you can get legally married at a drastically young age.  I want to say 14 but I might be mistaken.

What is the age it should be?

meatcleaver -> RE: Lower the voting age to 10 (2/6/2007 10:27:17 AM)

Germany is already thinking about giving children as young as 10 the vote.

SirDiscipliner69 -> RE: Lower the voting age to 10 (2/6/2007 10:29:34 AM)

Lowering the voting age or legal age to ten is the most simple thing I have read all day...I might suggest 16.

Wulfchyld -> RE: Lower the voting age to 10 (2/6/2007 10:31:32 AM)

Well I think a driver’s license should be a daytime license till about 18, or 4 years of road driving experience.

Do you think sending children to prison is appropriate?

I think you missed the point.

MsPoetress -> RE: Lower the voting age to 10 (2/6/2007 10:34:33 AM)

To throw an age out there is impossible. Since every situation is different as is the person. A16 year old with an IQ of 185, should be prosecuted differently than a 16 year old with an IQ of 85. They are not the same. Their thought process is completely different.

I mean look at Doogie Howser.....

You know what, I was listening to a neurologist on NPR that suggested that kids either be allowed to drive younger, or have the age at which they are allowed to drive extended. The reason for this was neurological development, learning new tasks, motor skills (no pun intended[:D]), and at 16 the average neurological development makes learning to drive about the worst age. He said we would be better of teaching kids to drive  at 14. I thought that rather interesting

I contend with a batch of kids 13 and under a lot. The only democratic thing they manage to do is not kill each other over video games, and vote the suprem master of (whichever particular game), generally the 8 year old, out of having the option of playing against them.

aSlavesLife -> RE: Lower the voting age to 10 (2/6/2007 10:42:32 AM)

Hmmm, 10 year olds in the military would mean smaller targets. I see a certain logic here.

I find that terrifying! I remember what I was like at 14. Thank God no one put me behind a wheel of a car.

10 is too young.  16 would be ok.

IQ has nothing to do with maturity and impulse control

here in PA, the mentally retarded vote. [nevermind that the caretaker sorta "helps"]

MsPoetress:
I thought Doogie Howser was a tv program ...fiction ...or was it baised on a real story...ie. a novel?
Having an IQ of 185 is neither a measure of emotional maturity nor of motor skills.
