This may be heard in committee February 24th

http://www.leginfo.ca.gov/pub/07-08/bill/asm/ab_0151-0200/ab_183_bill_20070124_introduced.html

quote:

This bill would require, commencing with the 2009-10 school year,
and for each school year thereafter, that each pupil register to vote
as a condition of graduation from high school if the pupil otherwise
meets the requirements to vote, subject to the exceptions below. The
bill would make the pupil responsible for registering to vote and
require the pupil to submit proof of registration to the school
registrar or other appropriate school official. The bill would
require the school district to verify that a pupil has complied with
these provisions before the pupil is allowed to graduate. The bill
would authorize a pupil to choose not to register to vote by
submitting that preference in writing to the school registrar or
other appropriate school official. A pupil who does not meet the
criteria to register to vote would be exempted from this requirement.
A school district would be required to notify high school pupils of
this graduation requirement, as provided. By imposing new duties on
school districts, this bill would impose a state-mandated local
program.

It should be something you want to do, not something you are forced to do.

Now think, just what kind of people think this shit up.

Also, being a registered voter is a big impediment to achieving non-taxpayer status in the US.

This whole thing is wrong, plain ass wrong. But look at all the other stuff they do, is anything really right ? What did we expect ?

So what are they up to?  There's got to be something more to it than just getting people to vote.  Just because they force you register it doesn't mean you'll vote.  I wonder what they're really up to?

That's a good question. I don't know the answer, but here's another question that may lend a clue:

When we register for a voter's card, do we somehow "contract" with the feds?

Blindingly obvious I should have thought. When you register you are recorded, which should make it a little more difficult to slip thru' the net. with regard to taxes etc.

Big deal, you have to sign up for selective services on your 18th birthday too.

Just because you have to register to vote, doesn't mean you have to vote, and it may even cull out some of the voter fraud going on.

The bill is backwards. One should be required to demonstrate a reasonable intellect, a basic understanding of the issues, and have read the Constitution before being allowed to vote.

only in La-La land would this happen

my opinion - it's an individual choice whether to register to vote or not. it shouldn't have to be forced by the government. i think for every kid who's registered, the district will receive more state money - votes for money

You can't force them to vote.

The problem is some people aren't ready to pick a party or they just pick according to what mom and dad say, instead of choosing for themselves.

I didn't have to.

This is purely cosmetic.

Where I have lived you can register to vote the same place you renew your driver’s license and plates. When I was in school you could register to vote when you registered for class. Registration issues is not causing low voter turnout. People not wanting to vote for what ever reason is causing low voter turnout.

Sorry but the government can “eye” you in so many ways to think that they need voter registration to help that is pure faulty logic.

I believe it is Bill Maher but I could be wrong, but he is a big proponent to making registration actually hard to do and for people not to discourage but not to encourage people to vote on the basis most people are ill informed idiots. I do not totally believe that but I thought I would just throw that out there.
