Force may be too strong a word...but there are places where you get fined if you don't vote.

I dont see how this is such a big deal. Is everyone missing where it says one can submit in writing that they dont want to regester. Also i think this might create more jobs which is something we need. And for those who say that not everyone that can vote should vote. How can you say that?? Just because you dont agree with who they would vote for does Not give you the right to say they should not vote. Some seem to think that just because they dont like soemthing it should be outlawed for all.
To the one who says
quote:

people aren't ready to pick a party or they just pick according to what mom and dad say, instead of choosing for themselves

I dont think many americans truly look into what the party stands for or all they are doing. Most americans vote on one issue. Or not what mom and dad say but what their favorite news station says.

"The bill would authorize a pupil to choose not to register to vote by
submitting that preference in writing to the school registrar or
other appropriate school official."

I would only support this- if it came with the following-

-> ballots will contain  "none of the above".

In the event that a certain % of "none of the above" votes are tabulated- the election is void- and must be redone.  I am weary of voting for the lesser of the 2 evils.

I also beleive voting needs reformed. A timeline not of 12 hours but say 2 weeks. A ballot could be mailed in.

Chapz my azz to hell0000000000, that i cant fricken ask the questions during the presidential debates. a scripted
soundbite is NOT acceptable to me.

I want housewifes, gas clerks, carpenters, grandmothers, I want real people I see in my town to ask the debate questions!

George Washington would conduct a q and a- so why not todays batch of leaders!!

plan b,.   declare halliburton prezident for life- and be done with it.

So what are they up to?  There's got to be something more to it than just getting people to vote.  Just because they force you register it doesn't mean you'll vote.  I wonder what they're really up to?

Blindingly obvious I should have thought. When you register you are recorded, which should make it a little more difficult to slip thru' the net. with regard to taxes etc.

I so agree. I have mentioned before that I am fairly recently divorced. In order to revert to my maiden name I must REGISTER with the State Police and be freaking fingerprinted. No go.
There is so much going on that is intertwined and shadowy, I never ever imagined myself to be on the paranoid side yet here I am.
Yes I am a registered voter but I do not always choose to vote. Choose..choice..

I agree. Also, if people can't be bothered to vote they don't deserve the right, or the effort required by force.

Do they make you get fingerprinted when you get married, and change your name in Michigan?

That is very odd.

Not when I got married in 89. The reason behind the new fingerprinting is what is known as the Real ID Act. Our government is hoping/trying to have all citizens fingerprinted and databased by 2014 *I am not positive on the year*. It goes along with the whole microchip ID thing that has started.
If I weren't an internet addict I would do my utmost to live off the grid. Just go totally green yup, but I would miss CM too much!

Sorry but the government can “eye” you in so many ways to think that they need voter registration to help that is pure faulty logic.

True.
But all the data can and WILL be cross checked so it is not possible for authorities to have too much info.

Thats the best idea I've seen on CollarME
If that happened the standing candidates must not stand again.
Also we need some method of recalling a standing in the UK MP in the US congressman or Senator.
That would make them pay more attention to the electorate.
Do you think it will happen ?

Edit to add that I've just realised that in all probability nobody would ever get elected if voiding the election were tried. lol

Compulsory registration has been a legal requirement here in the UK certainly for as long as I have been eligible to vote, but there is nothing to force me to cast a ballot. Having something a little like a social conscience I do however vote every chance I get, usually against something rather than for it.

I did post something similar to PAhunkboys idea on a voting thread in the past, glad to see I am not the only one that thinks along those lines:)

That is really one of my least favorite words, compulsory. I much prefer words like erm.. leeway & discretionary.

I hate the word too :(

Unfortunately it is a criminal offence to not correctly and completely fill in the voter registration forms that come round every so often. These are then used to make a file known as "the electoral roll" which is a limited access public document, or if the police or a credit reference agency you can have full access to all details in there. The only way to avoid it is move house regularly but then getting credit becomes practically impossible.

I may sound like I am joking when I say I want to live off the grid but I am not.. it just isn't feasible to do so.

Is it nicer just living in ignorance, not knowing what is happening? Can I just turn back the clock until I once more believe in my government?
:(

I read that part and thought ....if everyone can opt out then why have the law in the first place?  I have read the text of the law several times and keep coming up with the same question.  Then of course there is the obvious ...the bills author is an idiot but then again maybe I have missed something in the fine print.

Not so.  I have been off the grid for 20 years now.  No credit card, no phone bill, no electric bill, no water bill, no gas bill, no mortgage,  I make my own diesel fuel from waste vegitable oil,  make methane (propane) from livestock waste.  I access cm with a satellite internet connection.  You just have to want it bad enough to get it.  No I do not live like Robinson Caruso...I have all the useless crap in my house that you have in yours.  TV, VCR, CD player, DVD player, Quisinart, Microwave, washing machine, electric lights, runing water.  BUT the closest paved road is several miles away.  The closest town 15  miles away (8,000 people) closest real town (20,000+ people)30 miles away.  Cost of living including all taxes...less than $5,000 per year.
