This type of BS is one of the reasons that I moved out of Cali and came back to Arizona when I was forced to retire.  It does nothing more than increase the administrative and thus economic burden upon the state to maintain records, acts to maintain control over its citizens, and goes against what is in the best interest of the masses.

I am all in favor of voting.   I believe that everyone should register.   I believe that everyone should vote.   The optimum word here being should - not shall.

As opposed to say Texas, where you have large corporations flouting environmental laws or Ohio, where you have politicians flagranty violating election laws.

Welcome to California, now go home.

They forced me to do 30 hours of community service before I could graduate high school.  This is just an extension of that.

Apparently a lot of people DO think it's a good idea to force civil responsibilities on our youth.

MstrDouglas -> RE: Forced to Register to Vote (2/9/2007 8:06:48 AM)

Has anyone stopped to think that it is one way to also check for citizenship status, illegal's cant register to vote.  If you can't register because you are illegaly in this country, no diploma from our schools.
Just another thought

michaelOfGeorgia -> RE: Forced to Register to Vote (2/9/2007 8:14:22 AM)

what's next? forcing people to masturbate in public? being restricted to only one restaurant? driving only one model of vehicle? how many freedoms must we lose before we wake up and stop voting for these people. i woke up a long time ago. i think most of Americans are still lulled into a false sense of security.

Since the law allows one to opt out your point seems meaningless.
Since the illegals pay  for their education like the rest of us, why should'nt they be allowed to utilize the educational system?

miathecurious -> RE: Forced to Register to Vote (2/9/2007 8:48:15 AM)

It is rather short-sighted to think that illegals "pay" for their education.  Here is a synopsis:  Schools are paid for from property taxes.  Let's say an average property tax every year is $2000 (mine is only $900!).  Obviously it costs a lot more than $2000 to educate a child each year.  The only reason it works is that there are a lot of people who pay property taxes who have NO CHILDREN.

This is a form of community responsibility.  We agree to all pay a certain amount because the citizens who have children could not possibly pay for their own kid's education.  We share the cost among ourselves.  It is part of the deal.  It is NOT part of the deal for us all to pay for the education of non-citizens who are here illegally.

Do you honestly think that the illegal family with 6 children "pay" for their own children's education?

I am one of those who pay property taxes and have no children.  The overwhelming majority of illegal aliens in this country are single males.  Why do you assume that all illegal aliens have six children...not everyone is a Kennedy ie. large family.

You know, as a citizen of The Golden State I have never had much trouble following the laws of this state. And for all the insults to California, I wonder why people in the other 49 states are more likely to move here than to any other state for decade upon decade now? You know Americans are always touting the fact that everyone wants to move here as a measure of American superiority... well Americans themselves often seem to move to California...what's up with that? We do have enough people here, we really do not need more[:D]

KenDckey -> RE: Forced to Register to Vote (2/9/2007 10:27:12 AM)

Julia    I think they move there because of their huge wages (without taking into account the cost of living there), and welfare systems.

Hmmmmm, it would be really retarded to move here for welfare. The cost of living here is so high that it would really not be a good idea.

And since you have lived here, I am assuming that you have traveled the state, and in which case if you cannot see that people move here because of the beauty of it, well you did not get out much.

Edited: I grew up in the Sierras a few miles from Yosemite. My family helped homestead that park. My family goes back 6 generations (my niece's children make it 6th generation now) in California. Few can claim to have had the family history I have had here, because most came after the depression. Sinergy's family has 5 generations here...

I just love my state more than I love my country. I would fight for it before I would Ol Glory. I guess because there are two major mountain ranges between us and most of the rest of you, it just cracks me up that there is so much animosity toward California. We could give a rat's ass for the most part what the rest of you think as long as you do not piss in our backyard.

We do not try to enforce our way of being on the rest of you, but you all surely have a problem with how we do things here. It is really rather amusing.

Tuomas -> RE: Forced to Register to Vote (2/9/2007 11:11:14 AM)

This is a political ploy. There is a clear voter tendency to be found in post-school adolescents. That's why the voting age was dropped from 21 to 18, and now this certain group wants to make sure these same people are available to support their candidates. The US is not the only place this push is happening.

The idea is to put voting in the hands of people who are otherwise incabible of making a clear, rational decision in politics, and therefore rule the masses with much more simple means. It's a lot harder to trick smart people -you know, people who can read and understand the Constitution, for example.

In Britain, the three main parties offer a similar product. Thus, in terms of government, there isn't a choice. However, this doesn't mean you can't vote for a party which matches your values.

We all have a chance to cast a vote for a party which represents our interests. Whether or not that party has a chance of getting into government is a different matter.

Why vote? because 100 years ago the left fought tooth and nail to enfranchise the wider population. It's a matter of principle, not voting is akin to accepting the whims of the establishment.

1st- I am for securing the border.

education- payment for- is sorta a revolving fund.  I have no children. I rent. A protion of any rent pays for the schools.  Suppose I live to age 70. I pay for teh 12 years of education I got- from 18-70.    52 years.  In return- funds educating todays students- they too- will pay for @ 52 years.  This does not include college or a private school- i went to a private school- hence i paid 2x.   [im against vouchers- it was my CHOICE]

Although I do agree with you for the most part (and overwhelming majority do have multiple children, and if they don't, they quickly get them), I disagree that parents can't afford education for their children. Of topic, but it would be a long rant at the failings of the education system, but economically speaking, the actual real percentage of parents who cannot afford to educate their own children (assuming they dispose of the money they are currently spending in taxes for education) would be very small, and that could be suplimented with specific, targeted grants. Education is not expensive; the bureaucracy of education is.

They complained that minimum wage was not a livable wage, well now it isn't, because the cost of living went up. I was against the minimum wage increase, it’s just a never ending cycle.

Hey   For sake of argument we shall say you lived in the Coursegold or Oakhrst area.   In that area I could live nicely on my military retirement ($1000/mo)   But the majority of the people that live in LA or SF pay more than that in rent each month.   BTW  I love the sierras   great place to visit.
