The problem I have with the whole thread has to do with a curiousity about the statistical validity of
the sentence.

If you take X number of vanilla people, you will discover that Y number of them are overweight.

Y over X = percentage of vanilla who are overweight.  You end up with a number, like .15

You then take X number of BDSM people, and discover that Y number of them are overweight.

Y over X = percentage of BDSM people who are overweight.  Another number, like .16

Is the second number (.16 for those keeping score) categorically larger than the first number (.15)?

It might just be that when you take an average of a population of humans, a percentage of them are overweight.  The original poster might just have a skewed view based on personal observations.

i m quite amused at how so many seemingly bright and articulate people can get something so muddled. I was making a rather casual observation because i m interested in social/ sexual phenomnema( sp??) and never made a value judgement nor stated how i thought people should look. Checking out an observation in a very non threatening way. I must say on other forums i post on about music or politics i dont see this level of hostility. SO my theory about that is that people in BDSM have alot of control issues... a no brainer that, LOL. And perhaps alot of self esteem issues... percieving criticism where there is none is a criteria for low self esteem. I do thank the various individuals who made insightful observations, i found this enlightening.

I apologize if you took my post to be hostile.

I was simply pointing out that the OP did not post any sort of statistical evidence to suggest that the percentage of overweight people in BDSM is significantly greater than the percentage of overweight people in the general population.  Without any sort of empirical or statistical information to go on, it becomes a discussion about the perception of the OP without any sort of real connection to extant reality.

you are doing a great job of proving my last point synergy. i didn/t put up statistical evidence. i was stating an observation and asking for others input. Its not part of a master's thesis for sociology. you did not read my original post that started the thread, or were just looking to discredit it. which is hard since it doesn't really claim anything. an observation is just that, it doesn/t claim to be a fact

Fair enough.

I see a lot of overweight people both in and out of the lifestyle.

On the other hand, I see a relative dearth of overweight people depicted in media images, including magazine, movies, television, etc.  The way I tend to see my own perceptions is that the world is presented to me as not being populated by overweight people, which runs contrary to the evidence of my own experience in the real world.

The reason people have come out negatively to your OP has little to do with lack of self esteem.  It has to do with the fact that this particular issue has been beaten to death over and over again.  We are tired of it.  Yes we could have moved to a different thread and passed this one over, but then you don't get a true spattering of opinions, you only get opinions from those that believe as you do.  I would like to refer you to my post 138 on this thread. 

I hope you got some of what you were seeking in raising this issue again..

If a new member does a search (as should be standard protocol) IMO, he/she will find over 15 pages of posts relating to this very topic.  Yes some of those 15 pages include posts from this thread, but doesn't count the posts that have been retired as new posts arrive.  But those can be accessed to if you go to the actual thread.

Jeeezzz you lot still debating the FACT that there seems to be more overweight females on this site? I thought we had reasoned it was due to them being lifestylers and so don't feel the need to 'exercise' or do anything that a pro-domme would in order for her stay in business?! Anywyays half the posts on here are avoiding the friggin question and just banging on how insensitive a question it was in the first place...grow some balls goddam you!! (yes even the women!)

I prefer a full fightred woman, but there seem to be as many slender and average ones in BDSM as anywhere else.
