What do you do with coins?

Spend them as soon as I get them.

I'm another CoinStar fan. There's one at the grocery store I always shop at, so it's very convenient.

I filled up 2 one gallon jugs of coins in the last 4 years. I just rolled them up in the last few weeks and deposited them in my bank account. It was 300 dollars. I metal detected every cent. My old and silver coins I detect I put them in card board sleeves with the clear window in it, and label it as to what it is and where I metal detected it at. I share my old coin finds on 3 metal detecting web sites and on a photo gallery site. Now my pocket change which is kept separate, it all goes in the vending machines at work. By the way mt detector costed a grand so i need to just detect 700 dollars more to pay for it lol.

I have a cow bank I dump it into every night. I'm waitressing my way through school right now so I tend to get alot of change along with bills. Whatever bills dont get traded in for 5's or 10's at the end of the night and all my change goes into the bank and I dump them in the coinstar every week or so. That 7 % they keep is more than worth the time it takes to roll the damn things. Gotta love that little green machine!

The money either pays my monthly tuition or my car payment. Most often both. Amazing how fast it adds up so I totally love it when people don't want to take the coins and leave whatever is left along with bills. Funny since I used to hate change myself.

The UMs and I have a monster whisky bottle, and they all go in there.

Every few months, we pour them out and count them up to see how much more we have than the last time. We have around fifty pounds now.

I used a CoinStar for the first time today, and I don't think I ever will again. It has this reject tray, and no matter how many times I would dump my change through the machine, most of it would be spit right back out again. I stood there a good ten minutes cycling my change through over and over, scooping it out and pouring it back in each time. I finally got most of it to go in and ended up with a good $43 worth, but I'm still left with a jar full of continuously rejected change. In the future I think I'll return to the practice of rolling coins. It's slow, but not as annoying, and I don't pay any percentage.

I empty out my purse as soon as the coins start weighing my bag down and put them in a container. If I am bored I actually separate the coins into the plastic bags that banks give you. I deposit them into my account every few months.

Another Fan of Coin Star ... course all the quarters are gone by the time I get there (damn laundry) ... but I wanted to post something that I learned from a Grand Parent and used for years myself. If there are small unmentionables in your house and you can for go spending the coins let them use them at Holiday time as their shopping money. It's funny to see how protective they get of that jar once they know they get to use it.

I'm a CoinStar fan too; my last haul netted me $190. All the change gets tossed in a huge plastic jar and dumped once a year. I use the proceeds for errant foolishness.

I do the coffee can thing all year; come spring break at school, I take it to my bank to sort (they have a CoinStar like machine that doesn't cost me anything) then go to the dayspa with the proceeds. Yay!

I give a pretty big part of them to beggars. apparently so far i am the only one!!!!
The rest is use to buy things at work (without discount, band of thieves: i work in a grocery store)

I just thought of something my mother used to do with change... it worked two ways...

She had these things from the church called the "rice bowls" (probably not PC today), and any spare change went in there.

The second way it worked was if my brothers (or I) left ANY money in our pockets (even a $20), it went into the "rice bowl" -- this helped us all think about emptying our pockets and her not having a mess in her laundry machine. No one dared to go in to it to get their money out, we all felt we were going to go straight to hell if we did... LOL

All the money went to the charity at the church to help feed the poor.

LOL. A guy I used to work with called them "pagan baby" boxes. You put your change, etc. in these little cardboard boxes and turned them in at the end of Lent.

Yah, I think it started with my mother for lent as well, but, she found it was a good way to take care of the change in my brothers pockets, so, she kept doing it year round... lol.... pagan babies? I thought rice bowls was un PC

If it a coin worth money it goes into the coin collection. I actually buy coins.

Just plain old pocket change goes into a bank...when the bank gets full I take it to the real bank and let them sort it out.
I keep a seperate change account that we use on vacations and such. Amounts to a lot if you never spend any.

i keep a tray of change by the door at home... grab a handful when i leave, dump whatever i end up with back in when i get home. Since i generally only pay cash for lunch and items less than $10, and give exact change for it whenever it's convenient, it maintains a pretty constant level. i refuse to pay Coinstar, and banks are making it more and more aggravating to turn change into folding money.

Visiting the UK freaked me out coin-wise... between the exchange rate and the high-value coins, and having to look at the coins to see what they were worth when paying for something, at one point i realized i was walking around with almost $20US in change in my pocket. Not right, i tell ya.

ha ha ha... you just reminded me of when I was in New Zealand and got confused with the coins... you don't really "tip" there like we do here (aka 15-20%), but any left over change, you generally leave for the bartender or waitress.

At the bar for my friends "Hens Night" I was paying for a drink and told the bartender to keep the change... she gave me this strange look, but said "thanks!"

Come to find out, I gave her like a $10 coin for a $5 drink... woooppss...
