I've noticed that I'm the only one I've ever seen bringing coins to the credit union. That leaves me wondering: What does the rest of humankind do with them? Hence this poll.

I save and use my quarters for laundry. Having to use the laundrymat sucks. As for the rest, they sit in a jar by my table until I get someone to sort them out for me.

Heavens, I was so giddy with the excitement of my first poll that I forgot to answer my own question! I sort and roll them when I need cash. It's amazing how quickly and delightfully those little rolls add up.

I throw them into some sort of container until it is full. I then let CoinStar do the rest.

Oops, I completely forgot about the laundry option! Must have repressed it, since I hate hauling my clothes down to the machines in the basement.

Updated the poll to include a laundry option, which means two "others" are now showing up as "laundry" responses. Oh well. Hopefully, no one's basing a dissertation on this.

Himself and I rarely have cash on us, so we don't get a whole lot of coins, but when we do, they are dumped into an old tin canister (it may have once held a wine bottle, it's pretty tall) and when it's full we take it over to one of the coin star machines which counts the coins then spits you out a receipt to take to the front desk and turn in for folding money.

quarters are for laundry.  everything else gets collected when i get ambitious, and rolled and cashed in at my store.  Work is always buying our coins from us to restock the bank when it gets low, so thats the easy way for me to get rid of change.

What's CoinStar?

I think most of 'em are floating around the bottom of my purse.  That must be the reason for the jingle when I walk.

BitaTruble -> RE: What do you do with coins? (2/13/2007 7:55:40 PM)

CoinStar is a spare change counter. You dump all your change into it, it counts it out for you, take a certain % then spits you out a receipt for the rest.

cjenny -> RE: What do you do with coins? (2/13/2007 7:56:33 PM)

CoinStar is a nifty machine that you dump loads of change into. It gobbles it all then spits out either paper money or a receipt to take to a register. It also keeps a hefty percentage as a user fee.

I keep my change in a ton of different containers because I hate paying that user fee & I hate rolling coins lol.

I was going to make that one of the poll options, actually, but I ran out of spaces.

sensualmagirl -> RE: What do you do with coins? (2/13/2007 8:54:43 PM)

Hmmm...... well, I keep them in my coin purse inside my purse and listen carefully, I actually spend them when I make purchases (yes, I use cash 90% of the time)... Shock and horror, I know [;)]

If I have too much, they go in my "Buddha Kitty" bank (I am still wishing that Buddha is going to make the coins magically multiply into something substantial like say, a couple of thousand to pay the IRS this year) and then, when that gets full, I go to the CoinStar.

HydroMaster -> RE: What do you do with coins? (2/13/2007 8:55:00 PM)

I shoot them at my co-workers with rubber bands and use the rest to tip really really....REALLY bad strippers

kindaeasy69 -> RE: What do you do with coins? (2/13/2007 8:55:24 PM)

CoinStar

sensualmagirl -> RE: What do you do with coins? (2/13/2007 8:58:37 PM)

I forgot about laundry, well, the laundry system in the building where I live now, you need this kind of re-chargeable debit card thing, so, coins are useless for that now.
