Slaves referring to themselves as "this one" - 2/14/2007 6:40:22 AM

For some reason, I do not agree with using this address for myself.  I am a slave, but I also still do have a mind of my own and a heart that beats, etc etc.  Why refer to yourself as "this one", as if you aren't that important in life?  Now just to clarify, I am not saying anyone who does this is wrong, or stupid and I don't disapprove of others doing it.  I'm just trying to figure out why slaves are to refer to themselves in the third person.  Any explanations and even people who disagree are appreciated.

It is an affectation that started I believe in chatrooms and then infected real life.  Some find it charming, I certainly don't.  It isn't universal among slaves, so don't think it is required.

I think it developed as slaves are not to be focused on self.
It's about losing the big I self image, and being absorbed into your Master. It's a show of respect for your owner to write without being able to have your identity as an individual in your words.
It's an act of humble humility some Master's require of their slaves.
I don't feel strongly about it one way or another.
I can say it takes WAY more thought to write like that though.

It's my thought that for the most part it is part and parcel to the mindset that a Master has molded in their slave. In the sense that a slave's thinking is retrained to discard a sense of self and be focused on how the Master wants the slave to think, behave, etc.
Quite often during a conversation with my Master, I find I automatically refer to myself in the third person, yet this is something which wasn't a consciencious effort on my part. Often I do have difficulty in responding to a specific question asked of me and this is where I switch back to referring to myself as an individual instead of responding in the third person format.
I will always have my own thoughts as an individual but still able to switch into the correct mindset as slave to Master. Sometimes I do forget this and He does correct me when I've been remiss by not responding in the manner that is appropiate. Anytime when I'm not able to clearly reply in third party, I do switch to first person style.

i personally don't like the term 'this one'. i may be a slave, but i am also a person, with a brain to go with the body (brain's probably better than the body). m'Lord often comments to me that that is something He really likes about me...i'm not just a door mat. The term "this one" seems doormat-y to me.

Just my opinion.

Y/you, A/all, U/us

A dom's got a penchant for it? That I get. He wants you to think before you speak? That I get. He wants you to view yourself as an object? That I get.

But speaking in third person doesn't take away a sense of self, it just redefines "self." Speaking in third person doesn't take away ego, it just restructures it.

You're still being possessive by saying "She" and "her." Those are still possessive words. SOMEONE is still doing those things, and that SOMEONE is you.

Oddly enough I have randomly spoken in third person for as long as I can remember. Usually it's in a humorous way, or an arrogant way (again, all third person does is REDEFINE possession, it can be used to ENHANCE one's position), and as I got older, people around me thought it was weird when I suddenly burst into a sentence that used third person.

Imagine my surprise when I discovered the "scene" and found out that talking in third person was a big deal and some symbol of ego or lack thereof.

I know SOME people who can speak in third person and do it gracefully and communicate in a very fluid way and you don't even notice. I also see some people who speak in third person and they might as well be a blinking neon sign saying "LOOK HOW AWESOMELY SUBMISSIVE I AM TALKING LIKE THIS, ISN'T THIS COOL?"
For whatever reason you use it for, talking in third person can accomplish a lot of things, but the idea that you're losing ego or losing self or not being possessive anymore, just doesn't hold water IMO.

And then there are the people do that without even talking in third person *headache*

In my opinion it's a warm bunch of silly. I'm still a person. I'm just owned. By the way, happy Valentine's everyone!

It is a to each their own thing. It can just be a preference of the dominant or done for what people have already mentioned as a way to help as a tool for a submissive focus on their role which the effectiveness for that is a case by case basis.

Personally for me to be order to go third person like that would do nothing for me at all except having to fight laughter or saying it in a bad tone. Poor grammar does not make me more submissive. I can very much see though how it might help some people and can also see it as a sign of devotion to be used in written correspondence with their dominant.

Some are ordered to do it.  I can't imagine any other reason for doing it.
This girl thinks it's silly.

Master's bitch always feels silly using 3rd person.  Way way silly.  Of course she about fell out of her seat watching Master show how easy it is to use 3rd person speech.  Now that was funny, luckily he was amused as well = )

edited to add - luckily he isnt requiring it anymore!

Greetings,

Luckily my Master does not like nor does He require me to speak in third person. i have served those throught the years who did. To tell the truth i do not even notice it much when i read a post from a slave who does because to me it just means it is required of her to do so by her Master so who am i to judge what a Master requires of His slave. If my Master came home today and said "slave from now on you will only speak in third person" then guess what..i would dang sure talk in third person as He commanded for to do otherwise would be disobeying my Master to whom i have pledged myself.

i though, er.. excuse me... this one thought it was a gor style of speech.

I don't follow any one or set style, as you all can tell from my typing, Rule and i don't seem to stay together for long. which is difficult since i live with a fairly strict Master. I do some, i cap His names and titles, sometime cap He and His. sometimes i don't but when i type TO him i do.

i don't use third person but i have been known to say "Sir, your girl is ready."

so i can't even figure it out so i don't worry about it too much.. if it fits the moment and i makes Sir happy or just sounds kind of cool i might use it..

is my view all clear now?

greetings

Historically personal names in some societies were only to those of privilage.  It is true that some in Gor also use the 3rd person speech for slaves, since a slave is not allowed to own anything not even a personal name.  There is also a disciplinary tool "Talk like slave".  The idea of the 3d person speech for a slave is to remind the slave of their status, in some cases it has that effect.

I wish you well

~fast reply~

I don't really have an opinion one way or the other, I figure, to each their own.  However, I will say that I find it terribly hard to follow and understand what they are talking about on the forums.  Half the time, when I read the 3rd person stuff, I stop reading because it's simply too much for me.

I don't speak in 3rd person, never actually even crossed my mind... Sometimes when I'm talking to my Master, I'll say oh "your pet misses you" etc... but, it's not really a self-conscious thing.

edited to say: I find all of the answers here intriguing, thank you for your input and starting the topic, it was something I was wondering about myself.

~Two Cents~

This slave speaks in third person because her Master requires it of her - she is not Gorean,  she doesn't have issues of being a non-person because she is owned, and it is not about destroying her ego or sense of 'self'.  she is required to speak this way because it is a very constant reminder of her place as His property - whether just speaking to Him about how her day went or in the middle of the scene it's just another tool that can be used to keep that dynamic at the forefront of her mind in a literal sense.  This girl rallied against it when it first became a requirement, now she often finds a bit of comfort in it when interacting with her Master since she knows it pleases Him so.

Try communicating with a slave who referes to themselves at "it". I had (and still have to some degree) such a problem with following such a conversation that I finally asked the Master, whom I respect a great deal, about it. It dealt with the ego for him. Still doesn't make it any easier to follow the conversation, but at least the reasoning is clearer.
