I really truly would like to know what organizations that you think make a difference that are worth donating money to... perhaps I could look into them and give them a few bucks. I am pretty choosy about organizations to give money to because many of them are a racket... but I know there are some truly wonderful orgs that help people.

There is more than one way to skin a cat, thanks for sharing your way.

I was stationed at a well known nonprofit.  I was privy to alot of the infighting and bickering.  A large % went for "adminstrative" costs. "forms" and endless "training".

here is 2 places I would send a buck or 2 to:
http://www.freespeech.org/fscm2/genx.php?name=home

http://www.worldlinktv.org/

I like them because they tell all perspective of the story. Not just a soundbite- or what is more"infotainment" per corporate media.

Both stations can be viewed via both satlite providers.

Channel 9415 on Dish
9410 on Dish.

I dont know what the numbers are on Direct.

Both websites have archives of clips, podcasts.

If you need to know what Jaylo is wearing- these stations are not for you.

OK...and? No offence julia, but this is sort of a typical Cali mentality isn't it? They do this and they do that, so I'm not going to buy "insert your whatever here". Damnit folks, you are not going to save the world, give it up, brutality and killing will go on as it has for centuries, it's a world market, not a nursery school. I'll buy a product because that is what I want to buy and without doing a ton of research or worrying who did what to who to get it to the shelf or if it's going to cause mutants in a thousand years. If a few people don't buy a product, oh well, there are thousands others who will. I don't like McDonalds because they support gun control, but I've noticed that although I wouldn't eat a Big Mac if I was starving, they are still in business...so I support other organizations that have more pull. If you really feel strongly about something and want to make an impact, political influence or promoting a help organization would seem more prudent.

Ahem.  All due respect, truly, but must we generalize everyone in a given state and insult 'em all...hmmm?  I mean c'mon with all our fresh coastal air here, with the invention of most of technology, one's gotta realize maybe our "mentality" is onto something, eh?  (tongue & cheek here, I really don't care what folks think of those of us who live in this beautiful state).

However...having said that...while my little ol' change of spending may not make a difference to the masses, perhaps it makes a difference to me?  Perhaps I like to know where my money is going, and I prefer to be conscienscious about it.  It's okay to educate myself on where my money is going, really!   I mean, I do love glittery, sparkling, eye catching diamonds, but did you know there are diamond mines in Alaska that a) keep the money here in this fine country; b) support a diamond business other than DeBeers; and c) don't involve the mutilating of men, women and children to do it?  Now, if I have a choice, then I would like to choose the local option.  What Julia is pointing out are issues behind our purchases that people may not have known about.  Not to be argumentative here, but I'm not sure what's wrong with that...?

This is not a guilt post, it is more to make you aware if you were not already of how there is exploitation with three of the most popular Valentines Day gift traditions so that next year you can make better choices when selecting gifts.

First is about child slavery and chocolate
http://www.american.edu/ted/chocolate-slave.htm

The way to stop this to buy chocolate from companies that promote civil society and use only fair trade cocoa. One such company that sells in the USA is Divine chocolate.

The next one is the blood diamond trade (conflict diamonds)
http://www.un.org/peace/africa/Diamond.html

Here is a list of four things you can do to ensure that the diamonds that you give will not be tainted
http://www.amnesty.org.nz/web/pages/home.nsf/dd5cab6801f1723585256474005327c8/07697825f6001416cc257265006f9483!OpenDocument

The next is the flower industry which has a history of exploitation of single mothers, often exposing them to dangerous pesticides with no worker protection
http://www.alternet.org/rights/47847/

Ask where the flowers you bought came from.

It takes just a little effort and it is well worth it to make sure that our dollars are spent humanely... that way we give our money in a way that grows the kind of world we want our children to live and love in.

Amen. I understand where you are coming from and agree with your actions. I quit using both Google and Yahoo search engines {I still have yahoo mail address that I never use} when they acted in a complicit manner with the Chinese government to censor certain internet content from their citizenry.

Try BACA. Bikers against child abuse. It's a wonderful organization that works with local law enforcement and social programs to help families and children in abusive situations.

I would just like to thank you Julia for posting that,

We all need a wake up call from our very comfortable life (for some reason i watched oprahs 'mothers around the world' special, and it was a very intense reality check as to what other people have to go through.
People who are not fortunate enough to have a few jobs, make enough money to not go hungry and live comfortably.

I know my life isnt perfect, my decisions aren't perfect... but I am sure I could do more to help others .. or at least to stop them from being hurt by my actions, even if its as simple as not buying a certain product. There is alot of people who already do this... Remember what happened to the fur trade when everyone was alerted to the plight of the animals? And how many people are vegetarians now as opposed to 50 years ago?

We are powerful.

Again, Thankyou Julia

- Ania.

At least Scooter has a pet in his collar.

We have done all of this and more. Guess we could have stayed home and only eaten chocolate from a PC manufacturer instead.

~fast reply~

Thanks Julia...

One of the many reasons I refuse to ever buy/want a diamond... I don't trust that even if they say it's safe, that it is... I don't want to chance that anyones blood on my hands for something that costs that much!

As far as flowers, well, again, too much money anyhow... for something that my cats will eat or will die too quick. Plants are nice though...

Chocolates... well, that one, I'm going to have to live with the chance... again, you have to take it on face value that a company says they are fair trade... do I beleive them? I'm a skeptic when it comes to big business telling the market the truth about such things.

Yes, I can't change the world... but, I can do what little bit I can afford to do... and what makes me feel comfortable in my own skin... like with saying no to diamonds/buy Diamonique instead... I try to make my own cleaning supplies

I also still refuse to eat anything but albacore tuna because of the dolphins. I try to buy from cosmetic companies that are on PETA's list  -- I'm not a vegetarian, I know "Hypocrite", but, I also don't think animal testing for vanity sake is necessary. Animals are an important cause for me, I donate monthly to the ASPCA as well as do charitable walks for the local Humane Society.

Just my 2 cents...

Some charities/non profits attract teh bitchiest- controlling, demented people-

When selecting a charity- ask what % goes to the cause.  it ranges from 1% to 88% of every $.

when a nonprofit closest, by law no person may financially benefit- suppose they own a brick building- it must be passed on to another nonprofit.

Some view these laws as silly- a few persons in my area were busted and criminally charged for not following these laws.

All I have to say about anyone jumping on twicehappy for defending Scooter... so? What's the big deal/what's wrong with it?

Charity begins at home.

This is a thought I remind myself of when I realize I can't afford to buy all this organic and/or fair trade stuff... my most important charity is to me and mine... at the end of the day, that's the most important charity I can donate to.  We all do our part where, when, and how we can... But, first and foremost, charity begins at home.

Again, just my 2 cents, for whatever that's worth.

Katy- how is the snow situation there?  Roads have pretty much shut everything down here- an ice alvalanche fell on the road at Herndon. [40 miles north of Harrisburg, on rt 147]

Things are good today.  The main roads are clear, back roads and side streets remain a mess.  Anything is better than the sleet storm from the other night.  People are still digging out, we have snow, with ice on top of it, plus more snow.

hmmmm....

sorry, this Californian rejects your notion that making a difference in this world means supporting one political cause or promoting a large charitable organization.  in fact, it has nothing to do with where I was born, but has to do more with my own belief system, namely that I choose to serve others on more of a grass-roots level than on a large scale.  you won't find my name next to a large dollar figure on the back pages of some benefit program, but you will see me delivering food to my local food pantry or organizing a food drive or organizing a classroom project to support soldiers overseas.

my point is, if someone is inclined to make a difference in this world, don't be so quick to knock it because you don't agree with their methods.  we all make our own choices in how we spend our money, or how we don't, or how we help others, or how we don't.  in the end, your idea of inconsequential may have a huge significance to someone else.
