twicehappy, very interesting post, yet without being much aware of the core belifes and practices of Druid, I find that I go by a lot of what you posted (not everything)....could this be a point in common with other religions? How did Druid came about? I will read your link....interesting post.

The core beliefs of almost every druidic sect are posted above. The link is to Asatru not druidism.

Druidism is about knowledge (it translates loosely to tree knowledge) and keeping the oaths listed above as a way of life. You can be druid and worship any gods.

My family has been both druid and followers of Asatru for a little over three hundred years, going so far as to adopt Catholicism as a cover because the timing of the holidays is very similar.

We are Asatru because as family legend tells it a matriarch of our line saved a beast sacred to Ormigunda, Our Lady of the Beasts. In return she granted my family the heat and fertility of the beasts and long life.

No woman of my line has died before 102 years of age.

I am the oldest of 18, my mom was the baby of 23, one of my uncles has 28 kids, he's 82 and has a 3 year old, one of my brothers has 7, another aunt has 22.(I could go on but you get the point).

 We become fertile between 8 and 12 years of age (my Gran had her first at 12). We go through menopause usually between 65 and 70(my Gran had my mom at 52, her last baby).

I believe my granny, and i was scared, i got myself fixed after 3.

Thanks for the quick lesson.  I fell into the no, but I know it is group....just barely.  Do you know any good sites where an inquiring mind could go to learn more?

Here is a site. I was raised in the religion as a druid with Nordic faith, but this one is pretty good.

http://www.asatru.org/

LadyE, help here please?

Sorry people! Had to get tomorrow's work done tonight so missed this.

Websites arent my thing for Asatru to be honest - far too many out there peddling their own agenda which whilst OK for them, isnt necessarily based on anything more solid than their own personal gnosis. Nothing wrong with personal gnosis, (in fact, everything right about it if its genuine) but its personal, eg not necessarily suitable for all.

Best source I find is books - try these;

Teutonic Religion - Kveldulf Gundarsson
A Book Of Troth - Edred Thorsson (whom I've met!)

Also essential once you get the above are

Teutonic Magic- Gundarsson again
At The Well of Wyrd - Thorsson
Runelore - Thorsson
Leaves of Yggdrasill - Freya Aswynn (whom I also met!)

These latter provide the detail behind the basics of the first two. These are all US authors/published except the last one who is Dutch, living in UK.

Good job Lady.

*Slurp!*

LadyEllen -> RE: Asatruar? (2/15/2007 2:24:30 PM)

Thanks FK!

But I forgot - might also be handy to have a copy of the Edda!

The best basic telling I've found is Norse Myths by Kevin Crossley-Holland; sympathetic treatment, lots of end notes, excellent translation etc. I believe its in paperback reprint at the moment.

Well I would suggest hanging in the oak for 9 days... but some people may actually kill themselves in the process.

Well, hanging yourself, pierced with a spear for nine nights is likely to be fatal. Allfather died too, in the sense of passing into the All for a moment, after all. We are human though, not Gods. Our trial lies elsewhere, though its similar in nature and aim.

mnottertail -> RE: Asatruar? (2/15/2007 3:37:34 PM)

Ja, Jesus could only hang out for three...

The Heimskringla  Snurri Sturlasson
The Havamal  (google it)  Odins words
Myths of the Norsemen  H.A. Guerber (which translates the Poetic and Elder Eddas, in a cribnotes sort of way)

The Poetic Edda
The Elder Edda

The Niebulungen Lied

many books with the word Saga in it (Egils Saga  comes to mind)
Saga means saying or story--- a poem-song like ------ The wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald
http://www.religioustolerance.org/asatru.htm
http://www.pantheon.org/areas/mythology/europe/norse/articles.html
(this site is indeed a pantheon)

Since I am about it, and since it is no great secret Misstoyou (a female Master) on these boards is rather well versed in this in academic fashion---but don't swamp her with site requests or liturature requests or I will be on her shit-list in short order----

(btw, this type of thing is where many Goreans find their  awakening)

Hope this helps.

p.p.s.  I am heathen and not  under the  Asatru umbrella by and large.

Ron

And correlates to the hanged man of the tarot, and the sacrifice of the God in many faiths...

freyjasdottir -> RE: Asatruar? (2/28/2007 6:24:14 PM)

And here I was wondering why so many here caught on to my name.  Thanks Troll for pointing this thread out to me and Lady E thanks for starting it.

FukinTroll -> RE: Asatruar? (2/28/2007 6:26:49 PM)

Anytime toots! Thats what mean, evil, dispicable, perverted, vile, blah blah blah Trolls are for.

RazorJAK -> RE: Asatruar? (2/28/2007 8:29:14 PM)

The only organized "pagan" group I have ever belonged to was an asatric theod.  Which still amuses me since I held more fealty to an ettin than the aesir.

I guess I steered more towards the asatru because the majority of so-called pagans I had met up to that time were foofoo treehugging bunnyfucking crystalwaving fuck-knuckles who wouldn't have survived a weekend in the deep woods.

Was that on the name tag?

WyrdRich -> RE: Asatruar? (2/28/2007 8:31:59 PM)

      I don't identify as Asatru, but I've pillaged what works for me pretty freely.  Mostly that means that when in need, the Runes are my chosen tools of creating the focus for change.  Does that mean the followers of the Northern Path are gonna try and burn me at the stake too?

FukinTroll -> RE: Asatruar? (2/28/2007 8:34:45 PM)

Nope. But Lady E has a strap-on and a lot of pent up aggression.

       Might want to check the profile a bit more carefully, Fukin.  More 'welded' than strap, I think.

   (No disrespect intended M'lady)

FukinTroll -> RE: Asatruar? (2/28/2007 8:45:17 PM)

I was just trying to lure you in. I figure the strap on thing would be less... less KurtKaBoom like.

WyrdRich -> RE: Asatruar? (2/28/2007 8:57:44 PM)

     Hehehehehe.  With that profile?  He'd love every minute of it, as long as she knew he was the "Absolute Dominant."  LOL

FukinTroll -> RE: Asatruar? (2/28/2007 8:58:50 PM)

Hmm... good to know. I think i may have to pencil Kurt in as a hard limit.

WyrdRich -> RE: Asatruar? (2/28/2007 9:03:25 PM)

     You're just jealous of the attention he gets.
